The right choice depends on the specific model years, trims, engines, drivetrains, mileage, condition, service records and prices you are comparing. Match those details first, then verify safety information and open recalls for each vehicle before deciding.
How to make a fair Wagoneer-versus-Tahoe comparison
Compare actual candidates, not the nameplates in the abstract. A newer or higher-trim SUV may cost more but also differ in equipment, powertrain and condition; a model-wide verdict would conceal those differences. Chevrolet’s comparison page places a 2026 Tahoe beside a 2025 Wagoneer, so its figures are not a like-for-like answer for older used vehicles.
- Identify each vehicle: record model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, mileage and listed equipment.
- Compare the transaction: put asking price and mileage alongside condition and service history. There is no comparable used-price data here to declare one model the better value across the market.
- Test it against your needs: consider passenger and cargo space, towing requirements, safety equipment and likely fuel and repair costs for the exact examples.
- Weight priorities explicitly: decide what matters most to you rather than relying on an overall score that hides how its factors were weighted.
What current towing figures do—and do not—tell you
Chevrolet’s manufacturer comparison lists 7,900 lb standard towing for the 2026 Tahoe and 6,120 lb for the 2025 Wagoneer. Those figures describe different model years and are not proof of what an older used SUV can tow. Engine, drivetrain, equipment and the vehicle’s exact configuration matter; confirm specifications for the particular VIN and the load you plan to tow. Chevrolet’s comparison page also presents current-model seating, cargo and technology information, but it should not be treated as a specification sheet for earlier used models.
Read safety results by model year and test
IIHS reports a mixed set of results for the 2023 Wagoneer: Good ratings in the small-overlap front driver and passenger tests, the original moderate-overlap front test and updated side testing, but a Marginal rating in the updated moderate-overlap front test. That is more informative than reducing the vehicle to a blanket “safe” or “unsafe” label. Ratings apply to specified model years and tests; consult the IIHS 2023 Wagoneer results and look up the matching model-year Tahoe before making a direct safety comparison.

Check recalls for each vehicle by VIN
Use NHTSA’s live lookup for each candidate. A VIN or license-plate search identifies unrepaired recalls associated with that vehicle; a year, make and model search provides general information rather than a vehicle-specific result. Ask the seller for repair documentation, or confirm completion with a servicing dealer. Recall status can change, and the examples below are not an exhaustive list.

- Recall 23V-716: NHTSA’s 2023 report says some 2022–2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer vehicles may have third-row seat-belt buckles that are inaccessible or damaged. This does not establish that a particular vehicle is affected or that its repair remains open. See the NHTSA recall report.
- Recall 24V-436: NHTSA’s 2024 report says some 2022–2023 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer vehicles may have radio software that prevents the rearview-camera signal from reaching the media screen. Check applicability and repair status by VIN. See the NHTSA recall report.
Search NHTSA recalls using the specific vehicle’s VIN or license plate before purchase.
Inspect the actual SUV, not just its history report
Ask for maintenance records and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have the mechanic assess the vehicle’s condition and identify issues that may affect near-term costs. The evidence available here does not establish a reliable, like-for-like long-term reliability or repair-cost advantage for either model, so a broad claim that one is categorically cheaper to own is not supported.
