Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk: The 707-HP Hellcat-Powered Jeep Explained

The 707-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk paired Hellcat power with AWD, five-passenger practicality, and 7,200 pounds of towing ability. Here is how fast it was, how it compared with the SRT and Dodge Hellcat cars, and what used buyers must check.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk was the SUV equivalent of putting a muscle-car engine in the family vehicle and refusing to apologize for it. Its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 made 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft, while all-wheel drive helped it reach 60 mph in Jeep’s claimed 3.5 seconds. It still seated five, offered useful cargo space, and could tow up to 7,200 pounds. That combination made it remarkable—but also heavy, thirsty, expensive to run, and better at straight-line speed than serious cornering.

What made the Trackhawk different

The Trackhawk was not simply a Grand Cherokee SRT with a more aggressive appearance. Jeep rebuilt the WK2-generation SUV around a supercharged, intercooled 6.2-liter V8 producing 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, then gave it all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, serious Brembo brakes, and the ability to carry five people and tow up to 7,200 pounds.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That combination created the Trackhawk’s entire identity: it could launch like a muscle car, carry a family, handle poor weather better than a rear-drive Hellcat, and still function as a large SUV. The compromise was equally clear. It was heavy, thirsty, expensive to feed with tires and brakes, and more impressive in a straight line than on a road course.

The Hellcat-powered engine was the point

The Trackhawk’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 was related to the engine family that made Dodge’s Hellcat cars famous. In the Jeep, it produced 707 hp and 645 lb-ft. That torque figure was lower than the output of some rear-drive Hellcat applications because the Trackhawk’s exhaust system and SUV packaging imposed different requirements.

The engine’s importance went beyond its output on a specification sheet. A naturally aspirated V8 would have made the Grand Cherokee SRT quick, but the supercharger gave the Trackhawk the explosive power necessary to make a roughly 5,258-pound all-wheel-drive SUV accelerate at sports-car speeds.

Jeep paired the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. That matters because the Trackhawk’s acceleration depended on delivering the engine’s output repeatedly and cleanly, not merely producing a large dyno number. The all-wheel-drive system was equally important: it gave the tires a much better chance of using the available power during a launch than a rear-drive Hellcat car typically had.

How quick is the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk?

Jeep claimed 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The 2019 and 2021 brochure material presents that as a manufacturer-tested figure, so it should be identified as Jeep’s claim rather than treated as a universal result for every road, tire, temperature, or vehicle condition.

Independent testing confirms that the claim was realistic. Car and Driver recorded 3.5 seconds to 60 mph, a 12.0-second quarter-mile at 115 mph, and 0.89 g on a 300-foot skidpad. MotorTrend recorded an even quicker 3.3-second 0–60-mph run. Those numbers are not conflicting factory specifications; they are separate tests conducted under different conditions.

The Trackhawk’s launch is its most memorable performance feature. All-wheel-drive traction helps it convert the Hellcat-derived engine’s torque into forward motion instead of immediately overwhelming the rear tires. That is why the Trackhawk could be so repeatably quick despite its weight and tall SUV body.

Jeep also claimed a 180-mph top speed in 2021 brochure material. As with the acceleration figure, that is a manufacturer claim and should be kept separate from independently verified test results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast does not mean light or track-focused

The Trackhawk was stable and respectable in corners, but its mass remained impossible to hide. Car and Driver noted that higher-performance rivals offered greater cornering limits. The Jeep could carry speed confidently, yet it did not transform into a lightweight sports car simply because it had a supercharger.

Its braking results make the same point. The SUV used substantial Brembo hardware with six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers. Car and Driver measured a 168-foot stop from 70 mph, describing that result as average among comparable high-performance crossovers. Serious brake hardware is valuable, but it cannot erase the physics of a heavy vehicle.

The result is a useful distinction:

  • At a stoplight or on a highway on-ramp: the Trackhawk is extraordinary.
  • On a winding road: it is capable and stable, but its weight and SUV proportions become more obvious.
  • On a circuit: it offers speed and grip without matching the cornering limits, braking performance, or composure of lighter sports cars.

Calling it universally superior to sports cars misses the engineering brief. The Trackhawk’s achievement was breadth: it delivered startling straight-line speed without abandoning SUV usefulness.

It remained a practical five-passenger SUV

Jeep did not remove the Grand Cherokee’s basic usefulness to create the Trackhawk. It retained seating for five, a usable cargo area, and a cabin with leather-covered surfaces, standard technology, and practical storage. Car and Driver listed 36 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The towing rating is even more unusual. Jeep rated the Trackhawk to tow up to 7,200 pounds. That does not make every Trackhawk a perfect tow vehicle for every trailer, and buyers still need to confirm the equipment and rating for the specific vehicle, but the published capacity shows how broadly Jeep intended the SUV to operate.

Few vehicles could combine a claimed 3.5-second 0–60 time with that kind of towing ability. A Dodge Hellcat sedan or coupe could provide more traditional muscle-car drama, but it could not offer the Trackhawk’s seating position, cargo flexibility, all-weather traction, and SUV format.

Fuel economy and ownership costs

The Trackhawk was never economical transportation. Car and Driver listed EPA ratings of 11 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 13 mpg combined. In its 75-mph highway test, the publication achieved 17 mpg.

Those figures should be understood as a consequence of the vehicle’s mission, not as an isolated defect. A supercharged 6.2-liter V8 moving a roughly 5,258-pound all-wheel-drive SUV will consume substantially more fuel than an ordinary Grand Cherokee. Driving style, weather, traffic, tire condition, and modifications can all change real-world consumption, but none alter the basic trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel is only one part of the ownership calculation. A used Trackhawk buyer should also budget for high-performance tires, substantial brake components, premium maintenance, and the possibility that previous modifications have changed the vehicle’s service needs. The exact cost depends on the parts selected and the condition of the vehicle; the important point is that Trackhawk ownership should not be priced like ownership of a conventional Grand Cherokee.

Brake replacement deserves particular care. If a vehicle needs them, Trackhawk brake pads must be matched to the correct axle, rotor, caliper, compound, and model-year application. A listing that merely says it fits a Jeep Grand Cherokee is not enough evidence for a Trackhawk.

Trackhawk versus Grand Cherokee SRT

The SRT is the more useful comparison because both vehicles share the Grand Cherokee concept. Jeep’s own performance material distinguishes the Trackhawk’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from the SRT’s naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8.

Key distinction Powerful V8 performance 707 hp, AWD traction, and supercar-like launches

That makes the Trackhawk much more than a cosmetic package or a software revision. It used a different engine strategy and added model-specific performance equipment to the same broad SUV formula. The SRT may be the more rational choice for someone who wants a fast Grand Cherokee without the Trackhawk’s extreme fuel and consumables burden. The Trackhawk is for the buyer who specifically wants the absurdity.

Trackhawk versus Dodge Hellcat cars

The Trackhawk gave up some output compared with the regular Hellcat Challenger and Charger applications discussed by Car and Driver. Those rear-drive cars produced 717 hp in the relevant comparison, or 10 hp more than the Jeep, while some later Dodge variants went beyond that figure.

But horsepower alone does not decide which vehicle feels quicker from a standing start. The Dodge cars had less weight and a lower body, while the Trackhawk had all-wheel-drive traction and a much more practical cabin. The Jeep’s 707 hp was therefore not an attempt to win every specification contest. It was enough power to make an everyday SUV behave like something fundamentally unreasonable.

The comparison also explains why the Trackhawk became culturally significant. Jeep placed a powertrain associated with muscle cars into a vehicle that could carry passengers, haul cargo, travel in poor weather, and tow. It was not the most efficient or agile way to deploy a Hellcat engine, but it was one of the most entertainingly impractical.

Which years and generation are we talking about?

The Trackhawk belongs to the outgoing WK2 Grand Cherokee era. The 2021 Grand Cherokee brochure still listed the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 Trackhawk, while Stellantis described the all-new Grand Cherokee entering production later in 2021 as a separate next-generation vehicle. Mopar’s wholesale product guide identifies the 6.2-liter Hellcat long-block application for Trackhawk model years 2018–2021.

For research and shopping, that distinction is essential. A current Grand Cherokee advertisement, trim guide, or specification page may describe a different platform, engine lineup, and trim structure. It should not automatically be applied to a WK2 Trackhawk.

In other words, identify the model year and VIN before comparing equipment, ordering parts, evaluating recalls, or discussing pricing. The Trackhawk is best treated as a used, model-specific performance SUV rather than as a generic current Grand Cherokee trim.

Used Trackhawk buying checklist

1. Verify the exact vehicle

Confirm the model year, VIN, title history, mileage, and factory equipment. A Grand Cherokee SRT, a modified 6.4-liter vehicle, and a genuine Trackhawk are not interchangeable. Look for documentation that supports the vehicle’s identity rather than relying only on badges or appearance.

2. Check recalls by VIN

Two official recall notices are especially relevant when researching early Trackhawks:

  • Recall 18V-048: Certain 2018 Trackhawks built from October 11, 2017, through December 11, 2017, were covered because a fuel-supply jumper tube could separate. The notice described the possibility of an engine stall or an engine-compartment fire.
  • Recall 18V-759: Certain 2018 Grand Cherokee SRT and Trackhawk vehicles were covered because the driver’s floor mat could interfere with accelerator-pedal return.

Neither notice means that every Trackhawk has an open defect, and neither proves that a particular used vehicle remains unrepaired. Recall status is VIN-specific. Use NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool before purchase; recall repairs are generally completed without charge by the manufacturer or dealer.

The floor-mat issue also makes interior fitment worth checking in person. If the original mats are missing or damaged, replacement Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk floor mats should be selected by model year and exact floor configuration, secured correctly, and checked for unobstructed pedal movement. Do not assume that a mat advertised for a different Grand Cherokee trim has the same fit.

3. Inspect the condition of the performance hardware

Have a qualified technician inspect the brakes, tires, suspension, steering, cooling system, driveline, and underbody. Look for uneven tire wear, damaged wheels, brake vibration, fluid leaks, warning lights, and evidence of accident repair. These checks do not establish a universal Trackhawk failure pattern; they are sensible precautions for any expensive, high-output used vehicle.

Ask for service records and determine whether the vehicle was used for launches, track driving, towing, or extensive hard acceleration. A clean history does not guarantee perfect condition, but missing records make it harder to understand how the vehicle was maintained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Treat modifications as part of the inspection

Specialist catalogs document a large Trackhawk aftermarket, including exhaust systems, headers, supercharger pulleys, catch cans, fuel injectors, tuning hardware, brake components, and suspension links. That ecosystem can be useful, but it also means a modified vehicle deserves more scrutiny than a stock example.

Ask what was changed, who installed it, whether the original parts are included, and whether the tune matches the hardware. Confirm emissions and inspection legality for your location, and ask an independent technician to evaluate the installation. A modification that is appropriate for one model year or engine configuration may be wrong for another.

For factory replacement components, Mopar Trackhawk parts can be a logical starting point, especially when exact fitment matters. Mopar’s guide identifies the Trackhawk 6.2-liter engine application for 2018–2021, but even an OEM-branded part still needs to be matched to the vehicle’s year, axle, brake package, and configuration.

5. Calculate the real running budget

Before buying, estimate fuel use based on your driving, then add tire replacement, brake wear, scheduled service, insurance, registration, and inspection costs. Do not buy one solely because the used price looks attractive. The purchase price is only the entry point to owning a 707-hp SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A model-year-specific Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk service manual can help DIY owners understand procedures and component identification, but official owner information and factory service documentation should take priority. Match any manual to the exact model year rather than assuming that every WK2 Trackhawk has identical wiring, software, or equipment.

Modification potential and fitment warnings

The Trackhawk’s supercharged engine leaves obvious room for aftermarket tuning, and the specialist market reflects that. Available catalog categories include louder exhaust systems, headers, pulleys, injectors, catch cans, tuning devices, suspension links, and replacement brake parts.

That does not mean every part advertised for a Hellcat engine, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT, or Dodge Durango Hellcat will fit a Trackhawk. Compatibility can depend on model year, engine calibration, exhaust routing, transmission or driveline configuration, brake hardware, and the exact platform. Preserve the manufacturer’s stated year range and application when ordering.

For the same reason, Trackhawk performance parts should be treated as a research category rather than a universal shopping list. Verify the application with the manufacturer or specialist retailer, retain documentation, and consider how a change affects heat management, drivability, emissions compliance, warranty coverage, insurance, and resale value.

Why the Trackhawk still matters

The Trackhawk’s historical importance is not that it was the fastest vehicle in every test or the best choice for every owner. Its importance is that Jeep made the mismatch itself the product.

It took an engine better known from Dodge muscle cars and installed it in a five-passenger Grand Cherokee. It added all-wheel drive to make the power usable, retained meaningful cargo and towing ability, and equipped the SUV to stop and corner with more seriousness than its size might suggest. At the same time, the heavy body, 13-mpg combined EPA rating, average-for-class 70–0 braking result, and high consumables burden revealed the cost of that ambition.

The result was a vehicle with no especially sensible reason to exist—and an extremely clear emotional reason to exist. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk was the Hellcat-powered Jeep many enthusiasts wanted because it did not force them to choose between outrageous acceleration and everyday SUV practicality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk have?

The Trackhawk used a supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter V8 producing 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. It sent that output through an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How fast is the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk from 0 to 60 mph?

Jeep claimed 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Independent tests varied: Car and Driver recorded 3.5 seconds, while MotorTrend recorded 3.3 seconds. Different conditions explain the difference.

What years are the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk?

The Trackhawk was a WK2-generation Grand Cherokee model from the 2018–2021 era. It should not be confused with later Grand Cherokee generations or described as a current-production trim without separate market-specific confirmation.

Does every Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk have an open recall?

No. Recall status is specific to an individual vehicle identification number. Relevant early-vehicle notices include recalls 18V-048 and 18V-759, but buyers should use NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool to determine whether a particular vehicle has an open recall or completed repair.

How does the Trackhawk differ from the Grand Cherokee SRT?

The Trackhawk was quicker in a straight line and used a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, while the SRT used a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8. Both retained the five-passenger Grand Cherokee format, but the Trackhawk carried a much more extreme performance and ownership-cost brief.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk combined 707 hp, all-wheel-drive traction, five-passenger practicality, and a 7,200-pound towing rating in a package that could reach 60 mph in roughly 3.3–3.5 seconds. Its compromises—weight, fuel consumption, brake and tire expense, and merely average-for-class braking—are inseparable from the formula. Buy one as a specialized high-performance SUV, and verify its VIN, recalls, condition, modifications, and exact parts fitment before treating it like an ordinary Grand Cherokee.
