Check your VIN in the official recall lookup and follow the latest instructions for that vehicle. NHTSA says engine debris may cause engine failure, loss of drive power and/or an engine-compartment fire.
Which Jeep 4xe vehicles are covered?
NHTSA’s November 13, 2025 acknowledgement for recall 25V766 lists certain 2023–2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and 2024–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles. The notice identifies 112,859 potentially affected vehicles; that is the recall population, not a count of vehicles confirmed to have the defect. NHTSA recall 25V766
“Certain” is important: not every vehicle from those model years is necessarily included. Check the vehicle identification number (VIN) using NHTSA’s VIN lookup or the current instructions in your recall notice. A year-and-model match is not proof of eligibility, and this article cannot determine an individual VIN’s status.
What is the problem, and what warning signs may appear?
NHTSA says debris inside the engine can lead to engine failure. A later filing describes sand from the engine casting process contaminating internal parts. Failure may cause loss of drive power or an engine-compartment fire; an unexpected loss of propulsion can increase crash risk, while a fire can increase the risk of injury. The reviewed records do not establish a reliable per-vehicle probability of fire. NHTSA recall 25V766 NHTSA report 26E021

The later NHTSA report identifies possible engine-compartment knocking and/or an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp before failure. If you notice either, treat it as a warning that needs prompt attention rather than waiting for the vehicle to fail. Follow the current official notice for driving and service instructions; the evidence here does not establish a universal safe-to-drive rule for every vehicle or circumstance.
What should owners do now?
- Check the VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup and check for current notices from Jeep or your local dealer. Use the VIN, not just the model year, to establish whether your vehicle is included.
- Read the latest notice for your vehicle. The initial U.S. acknowledgement said the remedy was still under development in November 2025. Later information is not proof that a specific vehicle has been repaired; use current VIN-specific instructions and confirm with an authorized dealer.
- Contact a dealer if your VIN is included or you see a warning sign. Describe any engine-compartment knocking or malfunction indicator lamp, and ask what action the current recall notice requires. Do not rely on an aftermarket scanner or an owner-purchased engine to resolve a safety recall.
- Follow any explicit safety advisory. If your current notice says not to drive or to park outside, follow it and contact the dealer or the number provided in the notice for next steps.
How the later engine filing differs from the vehicle recall
NHTSA’s April 16, 2026 Part 573 report, filed by Chrysler as equipment recall 26E021 (manufacturer recall 33D), concerns 2,689 potentially involved replacement engines. It lists an “Inspect, Replace, Repurchase” remedy type, a “Do Not Drive Park Outside” advisory, and a plan for phased owner notices beginning around May 7, 2026. These are details of that separate equipment filing—not an updated count for 25V766 and not proof that a particular vehicle covered by 25V766 has been repaired or is subject to the same remedy. Check the status and instructions tied to your own VIN. NHTSA report 26E021

U.S. and Canadian notices are not interchangeable
The instructions depend on the country and the recall notice that applies. Transport Canada’s separate recall 2025617 says FCA Canada will notify owners and direct them to a dealer for a powertrain-control-module software update. If the warning indicates a problem, the Canadian notice says the owner should arrange engine replacement through a dealership. That Canada-specific process should not be treated as the U.S. remedy; use the guidance for your country and VIN. Transport Canada recall 2025617
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. This is an engine recall, not a battery-fire recall
Some 4xe vehicles have also been subject to separate high-voltage-battery fire recalls. Those are distinct from 25V766, which concerns possible engine contamination and resulting engine failure. If your vehicle has more than one open recall, check each VIN-specific notice and follow its own instructions.
