Gas Prices Are Soaring, but Diesel Is Worse. Here’s Why That Matters

Diesel usually costs more than regular gas, but tight supplies, high crude prices and low inventories have made its 2026 surge especially severe—with consequences for freight and goods.

In the United States, diesel’s 2026 price surge is especially severe because a normally tight market for distillate fuel has been hit by reduced global refining activity, high crude prices and low inventories. Diesel already tends to cost more than regular gasoline: it faces strong international demand, distinct production and distribution costs, and a federal highway tax that is six cents per gallon higher. The result matters beyond the pump because diesel powers trucks, trains and farm equipment that move goods.

Why is diesel more expensive than gas?

Diesel and gasoline are different refined products. They compete for refinery capacity, but their demand and supply conditions are not identical. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says on-highway diesel has cost more than regular gasoline almost continuously since September 2004.

Demand and production costs

Demand for diesel and other distillate fuels has been relatively high in Europe, China, India and the United States, according to the EIA. The U.S. transition to ultra-low-sulfur diesel also affected the costs of producing and distributing the fuel. These are structural factors, not a guarantee that diesel will be dearer at every station or on every day.

Taxes are part of the difference

The federal on-highway diesel excise tax is 24.40 cents per gallon, six cents more than the federal gasoline excise tax, the EIA says. State and local fuel taxes vary, so the tax difference at the pump depends partly on where a driver fills up. The federal tax gap contributes to diesel’s higher typical price, but it does not explain the whole difference.

What makes up diesel’s pump price?

Crude oil accounted for about 51% of average U.S. retail on-highway diesel prices from 2004 through 2025, according to the EIA. The rest includes refining costs and margins, distribution, marketing and station costs, and taxes. Those shares change over time and vary by location, so crude’s 51% share is a historical average, not a fixed split for today’s price. EIA: Factors affecting diesel prices

Why are diesel prices going up so much in 2026?

The 2026 rise reflects several pressures acting together: crude oil costs more, diesel refining margins are high, and global distillate supplies are tight. The EIA’s September 2026 analysis describes reduced refining activity in Russia, China and the Middle East as a factor tightening global supplies. That raises international diesel prices, increases the cost of U.S. imports and supports demand for U.S. exports. EIA: What goes into diesel prices?

High U.S. output has not meant abundant inventories

U.S. diesel production averaged 5.1 million barrels per day from January through August 2026, its highest level since 2019, the EIA reported. But production alone does not determine what remains available for U.S. buyers. Net exports had stayed near or above their previous five-year high since February, and inventories were 13% below the five-year seasonal average in the week ending September 11, 2026. In that same week, U.S. refinery utilization reached 97%.

Low inventories leave less room to absorb supply disruptions or a sudden increase in demand. When available stocks are tight, buyers compete for fuel and refining margins can rise. High domestic production can therefore coexist with a tight domestic market when exports are strong and global supplies are constrained.

Crude oil and the diesel crack spread

Crude oil is a major cost behind both gasoline and diesel, but it is not the only driver of retail prices. The diesel crack spread is a market measure used as a proxy for the margin between crude oil and refined diesel. The EIA identifies high crude prices and a high diesel crack spread as drivers of the 2026 retail increase. When diesel refining margins rise faster than gasoline margins, diesel can climb more sharply even if crude is affecting both fuels.

What the dated price figures show

The EIA’s weekly average U.S. retail diesel price was $6.29 per gallon on September 14, 2026. The agency said that was the highest nominal level in its series since 1994 and the highest inflation-adjusted level since 2022. It is a dated weekly observation, not a live quote for October 4, 2026. EIA: September 2026 diesel price and market analysis

Separately, the Associated Press reported an approximate 56% increase from about $3.76 per gallon before the late-February 2026 war with Iran to its early-September comparison, citing AAA prices. That is an AP-reported comparison, not an EIA calculation of the increase. The AP attributed supply-chain disruption in part to tanker traffic around the Strait of Hormuz; that description should not be read as evidence that the route was continuously or completely closed. Why does diesel affect shipping and trucking costs?

Diesel powers much of the freight system, including trucks and rail, and is also used in agriculture. As the EIA puts it, “High diesel prices can contribute to higher on-road and rail freight costs for all goods.” The AP also describes diesel use in farm equipment, fishing boats, and the trains and trucks that carry food to grocery stores.

Trucking company SemiCab founder and CEO Ajesh Kapoor told the AP: “Diesel price has a very, very direct impact on everything that moves on pretty much any mode.” Fuel is a significant operating expense for many freight businesses, so higher diesel prices can raise the cost of hauling goods and may lead to higher fuel surcharges or delivery fees.

Will higher diesel prices make groceries more expensive?

They can contribute to higher costs for some goods, but the effect is neither immediate nor uniform. Freight contracts may delay how quickly a fuel increase reaches a shipper’s bill, while retailer margins, demand and other product-specific costs can absorb or offset some of the pressure.

David Ortega, a professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University, told the AP: “Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins,” and “But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store.” That describes a possible pass-through over time, not a fixed increase in grocery bills for every rise in diesel prices. The AP notes that non-fuel factors can also offset transport costs. Associated Press: Diesel costs and prices for goods

How to read diesel price comparisons

Before deciding that diesel is rising faster than gasoline, compare like with like. A retail pump price should be compared with another retail pump price—not with a wholesale quote or futures contract—and both figures should cover the same geography and date. Check whether a figure is nominal or adjusted for inflation, and whether it includes taxes.

For a change over time, the relevant factors are crude oil, diesel refining margins, inventories and supply, distribution and retail costs, and taxes. Local taxes, access to supply routes and regional competition can also help explain why prices differ from one place to another. The September 2026 figures above describe specific U.S. observations; they should not be treated as current local prices.
