“Death wobble” is the common name for a severe, sustained oscillation in a Jeep’s front end and steering. Jeep’s technical service bulletins use the term shimmy and document specific situations—not one universal defect or fix. The issue remains a concern because manufacturer guidance has addressed steering-shimmy complaints for particular Wrangler and Gladiator model years over time, while the correct diagnosis depends on the vehicle, setup, and symptoms.
What Jeep owners mean by “death wobble”
Owners use “death wobble” to describe a violent, sustained shaking or oscillation felt through the steering wheel and front end. FCA’s technical terminology is more specific: its November 20, 2019 bulletin describes a steering-wheel shimmy after a road impact. FCA wrote, “The customer may notice a shimmy in the steering wheel after hitting an irregularity on the road surface such as an expansion joint, pothole or bump.” The bulletin applies to 2018–2020 Wrangler (JL) and 2020 Gladiator (JT) vehicles in North America, APAC, EMEA, and LATAM—not every Jeep. FCA US LLC, Technical Service Bulletin 19-002-19, November 20, 2019.
A shake after a bump, steering wander, pulling to one side, excess steering play, and a sustained oscillation are not interchangeable diagnoses. Their similarity can make it hard to tell what a repair is intended to address. The 2019 bulletin directs technicians to steering-linkage and steering-damper procedures; it does not establish one cause or one repair for all vehicles.
Why the issue is still a concern
FCA has published shimmy diagnosis guidance for defined Wrangler and Gladiator groups in different years, and a separate procedure for certain lifted Wrangler JKs. That record shows the complaint has been addressed in model-specific service guidance. It does not show that every Jeep has the problem, establish a fleet-wide failure rate, or prove that all cases share a faulty part.

One source of confusion is that a bulletin addressing one kind of steering complaint may be mistaken for a fix for another. FCA’s November 19, 2020 “Improved Steering Feel” bulletin for 2018–2020 Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator vehicles in North America explicitly warns: “This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) repair will NOT correct a sustained steering shake, shimmy or vibration.” In other words, steering-feel guidance is not a sustained-wobble repair. Which service guidance applies to which Jeep?
| Guidance | Vehicles and conditions covered | What it says—and does not say |
|---|---|---|
| FCA TSB 19-002-19, November 20, 2019 | 2018–2020 Wrangler (JL) and 2020 Gladiator (JT), in North America, APAC, EMEA, and LATAM; steering shimmy after a road irregularity. | Directs technicians to steering-linkage and damper procedures. It is not a universal diagnosis or parts-replacement prescription. Bulletin |
| FCA TSB 08-074-20 Revision E, November 19, 2020 | 2018–2020 Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator in North America; steering-feel complaints. | States that its steering-feel repair will not correct sustained steering shake, shimmy, or vibration. Bulletin |
| FCA TSB dated March 25, 2016 | 2012–2015 Wrangler JK with a Mopar four-inch lift, built before June 15, 2015; low-speed vibration or shimmy in that setup. | Specifies replacement of the front track-bar bracket and an alignment check for that defined case. It is not a general repair for every Wrangler. Bulletin |
How to approach diagnosis and repair
A useful diagnosis starts with the exact vehicle and the complaint, not a shopping list of parts. Tell the technician the model year and model, market, whether the Jeep is stock or modified, what triggered the shake, and whether it was brief or sustained. Ask which manufacturer procedure applies and what inspection findings support the proposed repair.

- Match the symptom: distinguish a post-impact shimmy from steering wander, pull, excess play, or sustained oscillation.
- Account for the setup: lifts and other suspension changes can make a procedure intended for a stock vehicle inapplicable.
- Ask for a confirmed diagnosis: the cited bulletins do not support replacing one part as a cure for every case.
- Use a qualified technician: severe or recurring steering oscillation warrants professional inspection. Avoid continuing to drive if the vehicle feels unsafe to control.
A steering stabilizer, also called a steering damper, is a relevant component, but the cited guidance does not establish a new stabilizer as a universal cure. A search for a Jeep Wrangler steering stabilizer is not a diagnosis: fitment varies by model year and setup, and replacement alone is not supported as a general fix.

A technical service bulletin is not the same as a safety recall, and the bulletins above do not establish universal recall coverage for death wobble. Check the status of your own Jeep by VIN using Mopar’s official recall lookup. Mopar says safety-recall repairs are performed at no charge. A recall check does not replace diagnosis of a symptom, and a paid diagnostic or repair visit is distinct from a recall repair.
