AMC’s Javelin AMX had the hardware and engine options to be a serious Challenger Hemi rival, but no like-for-like test in the available period sources proves that it matched a specific Hemi car. The answer depends on which AMX, which model year, which engine and transmission, and whether “match” means acceleration, quarter-mile time, road racing or simply street presence.
The important distinction is that AMC used the AMX name on two different bodies. The 1968–1970 AMX was a short-wheelbase two-seater. From 1971 through 1974, AMX became the top-performance version of the four-seat Javelin. Most claims about an AMC muscle car facing a Challenger Hemi concern that later Javelin AMX, especially with the optional 401-cubic-inch V8.

AMC’s two AMX generations were not the same car
AMC entered the pony-car market with the Javelin in September 1967 and followed it with the two-seat AMX in February 1968. The company had developed the concepts on separate tracks, then put both into production on a shared platform. The AMX shortened the wheelbase, deleted the rear seat and aimed at buyers who wanted a compact American sports car rather than a conventional four-seat pony car. The American Motors Owners Club history documents that relationship and the model’s engine progression.
| Model | Model years | Body and role | What the name means |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMX | 1968–1970 | Two-seat, short-wheelbase sports coupe | A distinct body derived from the Javelin platform |
| Javelin AMX | 1971–1974 | Four-seat Javelin performance model | The AMX designation applied to the top-line Javelin |
That distinction matters when someone quotes an AMX horsepower figure or compares one with a Dodge Challenger. A 1968 AMX 390 and a 1973 Javelin AMX 401 are related, but they are not interchangeable cars, and neither is automatically representative of every AMX badge.

Why the Challenger Hemi comparison is credible—but unproven
A 401-powered Javelin AMX had the displacement, rear-wheel-drive layout and performance equipment expected of a serious muscle car. That makes “could match the Dodge Challenger Hemi” a reasonable performance question. It does not make it a verified result. The sources available for this history do not provide a direct acceleration, quarter-mile or other controlled test against a specified Challenger Hemi.
“Hemi” also covers more than one Challenger configuration and model year. A meaningful comparison would have to identify the Challenger’s year, engine output rating method, transmission, axle ratio, tire and test conditions. The same controls are necessary on the AMC side.
| Question | What can be established | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| Did AMC build a performance Javelin? | Yes. The Javelin AMX combined V8 power with model-specific chassis and body equipment. | Not applicable |
| Was a 401 available? | Yes, according to the Javelin AMX Registry’s 1971–1974 material. | Exact output depends on model year and rating standard. |
| Did it equal a Challenger Hemi in a test? | No direct, like-for-like result is documented in the cited sources. | Acceleration, elapsed time and trap speed against a named Challenger. |
Engine history: from 290 power to the 401 option
1968 AMX engines
The first AMX offered AMC V8s rather than an engine borrowed from another manufacturer. The club feature lists a 290-cubic-inch V8 rated at 235 horsepower, a 343 rated at 280 horsepower and an optional four-barrel 390 rated at 315 horsepower for 1968. Those figures are specific to the model year and the source’s rating convention; they should not be used as universal numbers for every AMC V8.
1970 two-seat AMX
For 1970, the same feature lists the 360 at 290 horsepower and the 390 at 325 horsepower. The 1970 car therefore had stronger published output than the earliest AMX, but it was still the final year of the two-seat body. AMC ended that configuration after 1970 rather than continuing it alongside the later Javelin AMX.

1971–1974 Javelin AMX
The Javelin AMX Registry says the 1971 Javelin AMX came standard with a 360-cubic-inch V8 rated at 245 horsepower, with a 401 available. The same registry says the 304 became standard after 1972. Because engine ratings and standard equipment changed by year, a seller’s phrase such as “AMX 401” is more informative than an AMX badge alone, while “Javelin AMX” still does not identify the engine without documentation.
The registry’s sample contains 19 401-equipped cars among 36 entries. That is useful evidence that the 401 configuration is represented in surviving registry records, but it is a registry sample, not a factory production total or a market-share calculation.
It was more than an appearance package
Some enthusiasts ask whether the 1971–1974 car was “only a trim package.” The AMX designation did include distinctive styling, but the registry describes functional equipment as well. Listed features include brake-cooling details, larger tires, a raised fiberglass hood and a rear spoiler. The Go Package and front spoiler were not available on other Javelin models, according to the registry.

Racing gave the Javelin AMX real credibility
The Javelin’s Trans-Am program is an important part of the performance story, provided the championship years are stated correctly. The reproduced October 1987 Collectible Automobile article, available through the Javelin AMX Registry, includes correction notes identifying Penske and Mark Donohue as the 1971 championship winners and Roy Woods and George Follmer for 1972. Do not repeat the article’s initially printed 1970 championship year; the appended corrections change those references.
Race success does not turn a showroom Javelin AMX into a Trans-Am car. Competition engines, suspension settings, tires, gearing and preparation differ substantially from street equipment. It does, however, demonstrate that AMC’s platform could be developed for serious road racing and that the Javelin was not merely a styling exercise.
The FIA Historic Database entry lists an AMC Javelin AMX Group 2 car with rear-wheel drive, eight cylinders and 6568 cc, homologated on November 2, 1973. FIA notes that its online forms are for consultation and are not valid by themselves for event entry, so the listing should be read as homologation history, not as a current competition eligibility certificate.

Audrain Automobile Museum separately reports 4,416 1970 AMXs on its 1970 AMX 390 4-BBL exhibit page. Because that conflicts with the club feature’s 4,116, both figures should be attributed rather than silently combined. A factory production record would be needed to resolve the difference.
Audrain reproduces the advertising phrase, “The only American sports car that costs less than $4,000.” That is an historical advertising claim shown on the museum page, not an independently verified market-wide price comparison. The museum page also contains an internal specification inconsistency: its narrative discusses 360- and 390-cubic-inch engines while a separate specifications block lists “289.6 cu in.” The club and registry figures are therefore the safer references for engine displacement and output.
For broader context, the reproduced 1987 article says 56,462 1968-model Javelins were sold in calendar year 1968 and reports 70,000 Javelin sales across that calendar year. Those statements use calendar-year and model-year language differently, so they should not be treated as a single factory model-year total.

- Identify the exact model: two-seat 1968–1970 AMX or four-seat 1971–1974 Javelin AMX.
- Verify the engine: record displacement, carburetor, factory or replacement status and the model-year rating.
- Record the drivetrain: manual or automatic transmission, axle ratio, differential and tire size.
- Name the metric: 0–60 mph, quarter-mile elapsed time, trap speed, rolling acceleration, braking or road-course pace.
- Match conditions: compare similar weather, surface, driver, fuel, vehicle weight and test method.
- Separate road and race cars: a Trans-Am specification cannot be used as a stock showroom benchmark.
Without those controls, “matched a Hemi” can mean anything from a close street encounter to a properly timed drag-strip result. The historical evidence supports the AMX’s credentials and options; it does not supply the missing head-to-head number.
What to inspect before buying or restoring one
Rarity and performance make an AMX appealing, but rust and undocumented modifications can overwhelm the value of a sound engine. The club feature identifies recurring corrosion areas on AMXs and Javelins:
- Rear quarter panels around the trunk area
- The sill section between the trunk lid and rear window
- Lower A-pillars
- Front and rear floor pans
- Trunk pans
- Water-trapping troughs beneath the front fenders
Inspect both sides, lift carpets and trunk mats, and look for welded patches that conceal weakened structure. Check whether the hood, spoiler, brake-cooling hardware and wheels are original, correctly reproduced or later additions. A 401 badge without casting, stamping or invoice evidence should be treated as a claim until verified.

The first-generation AMX benefits from parts shared with the Javelin and Rambler American. The club feature names Kennedy American and American Parts Depot as reproduction-parts sources, but their current stock, fitment and support are not established here. The club’s library guide also lists the hardbound history book American Motors Muscle Cars 1966–1970 for readers who want period-focused reference material; see the American Motors Owners Club library guide.
Verdict: a credible rival, not a proven equal
AMC absolutely built a muscle car with a legitimate performance case. The 1971–1974 Javelin AMX brought the AMX name to a four-seat body, offered a 401 V8, added functional chassis and aerodynamic equipment, and carried a competition program strong enough to win corrected 1971 and 1972 Trans-Am championships. The earlier two-seat AMX established the name with short-wheelbase packaging and increasingly powerful 290, 343, 360 and 390 engines.
What cannot honestly be said from the cited evidence is that a particular Javelin AMX beat or equaled a particular Dodge Challenger Hemi in a measured test. The fairest conclusion is narrower and more useful: a correctly specified 401 Javelin AMX was built to run with the era’s serious American muscle cars, while the exact outcome against a Challenger Hemi depends on the two cars and the test.
