A Japanese kei truck is dramatically smaller and lighter-duty than a U.S. compact pickup. The trade-off is straightforward: a kei truck is easier to place in narrow lanes, alleys, fields and tight work areas, while a compact pickup offers more seats, payload headroom and towing flexibility. The Mitsubishi Minicab Truck and 2026 Ford Maverick provide clear, current examples, but their Japanese and U.S. prices, fuel tests and legal requirements cannot be compared as if they were identical products.
What counts as a Japanese mini truck?
Japanese mini trucks are usually kei trucks, a class built around Japan’s size and engine regulations. They are purpose-built utility vehicles rather than shortened versions of American pickups. The representative Mitsubishi Minicab Truck has a two-seat cab, a 658 cc engine, a choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and a compact cargo bed. Its dimensions and payload are set up for light agricultural, groundskeeping, delivery and property work where access matters as much as carrying volume.

A U.S. compact truck uses a different design brief. The 2026 Ford Maverick is a four-door pickup that can seat up to five people and is offered with a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain on specified trims, along with other configurations. It is still smaller than a full-size pickup, but it is designed to function as a primary road vehicle for passengers, commuting and cargo.

Size: the kei truck’s defining advantage
Length and width
The Minicab is 3,395 mm long and 1,475 mm wide. The listed Maverick dimensions are about 5,075 mm long and 1,844 mm wide. On those published measurements, the Maverick is approximately 1.67 meters longer and 369 mm wider. That difference affects every low-speed task: turning into a narrow gate, passing between buildings, parking beside equipment and positioning the bed near a loading point.
A kei truck’s narrow body can reduce the amount of space needed to maneuver, but it does not make a difficult route automatically safe. Measure the actual mirrors, bed rails, attachments and turning area on the vehicle you are buying. A body that fits between two obstacles can still have insufficient clearance for doors, tailgate operation or a loaded implement.

Bed dimensions and loading
The Minicab specification lists a bed about 1,940 mm long and 1,410 mm wide, with dimensions dependent on configuration. The Maverick’s listed bed length is 54.4 inches. Bed length alone does not determine usefulness: wheel-well spacing, tailgate position, payload rating and how weight is distributed all matter. Confirm the exact bed and tie-down arrangement before assuming a particular pallet, mower or tool chest will fit.
Parking and access decisions
Choose the kei truck when the recurring problem is physical access rather than absolute cargo mass. Examples include maintaining a large property with narrow service paths, moving light materials around a farm, or reaching structures where a wider pickup requires repeated repositioning. Choose the Maverick when the vehicle must also carry several adults, travel routinely on public roads as a family vehicle, or provide the payload and towing ratings listed for its configuration.

Payload, passengers and towing
How much can each carry?
The Minicab lists a maximum payload of 350 kg, approximately 772 lb. The 2026 Maverick lists up to 1,500 lb in specified configurations. The Maverick therefore has about twice the stated maximum payload of this Minicab example, but the comparison is only valid when both vehicles are loaded according to their respective manufacturer limits. Occupants, accessories and tongue weight can consume available payload, so do not treat the headline number as cargo capacity after everyone and everything is aboard.
Payload is a limit, not a recommendation to exceed the vehicle’s axle, tire or suspension ratings. Read the door-label ratings and owner documentation for the specific truck. If your load is dense—soil, stone, firewood or machinery—calculate its weight before choosing a vehicle based on bed volume.
Seats and daily flexibility
The Minicab has two seats. That arrangement is efficient for one driver and one helper, but it rules out transporting a work crew or family in the same vehicle. The Maverick seats up to five, so it can combine passenger duty with an open bed. If the truck will replace a car, the additional seats may be more important than the kei truck’s smaller footprint.
Towing
The cited Minicab material does not state a towing rating, so no towing capacity should be assumed from its engine size or four-wheel-drive availability. Ford lists up to 4,000 lb for the Maverick when equipped with the available 4K Tow Package. That is an equipment-specific maximum, not a rating for every Maverick. Verify the tow package, trailer brakes, hitch requirements and payload impact on the exact vehicle.
Powertrains and fuel-economy figures
Minicab engine and drive choices
The representative Minicab uses a 658 cc engine and is available with 2WD or 4WD. Mitsubishi publishes WLTC fuel-consumption figures of 18.7 km/L for the five-speed manual and 15.7 km/L for the automatic. Those figures identify the tested transmission versions; they are not a promise that every body style, tire or load will achieve the same result.

Maverick hybrid specification
Ford lists a 2.5-liter hybrid as standard on the cited 2026 XL, XLT and Lariat trims. For specified front-wheel-drive hybrid trims, Ford gives an EPA-estimated 42 mpg city figure. The Maverick range also includes other configurations, so the 42 mpg number should not be applied to every drivetrain or trim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the numbers cannot be ranked directly
WLTC and EPA procedures use different test cycles, units and assumptions. Converting 18.7 km/L into miles per gallon and placing it beside 42 mpg would create a misleading impression of a laboratory head-to-head test. Driving speed, four-wheel drive, transmission, temperature, payload and route can change actual consumption in either vehicle. Use each figure to understand the manufacturer’s stated configuration, not to claim a universal fuel-economy winner.
Price: domestic list prices are not a U.S. buying comparison
What the published prices mean
Mitsubishi lists a Japanese domestic starting price of ¥1,311,200 for the Minicab Truck. Ford lists a U.S. starting MSRP of $28,145 for the 2026 Maverick. These are useful scale markers, but they are not equivalent transaction prices. They are quoted in different currencies and markets, and neither figure includes the complete cost of buying the other vehicle in your location.
Costs that can change an imported truck’s total
A U.S. buyer considering a Japanese truck must account for more than the seller’s price. The final amount can include inland transport in Japan, ocean freight, marine insurance, customs charges, duties, port handling, broker or registered-importer fees, compliance work, storage, repairs, tires, lighting changes, inspection, title fees, sales or use tax and local registration. Insurance availability and premiums may also differ for an imported vehicle. The cited specifications do not establish any of these amounts, so a precise landed-cost comparison would be speculation.
Ask for an itemized quote tied to the vehicle identification number and destination state. Keep the purchase price, shipping estimate and government charges separate; a low auction price can be overwhelmed by transport, compliance or storage expenses.

Can you legally import and drive a Japanese mini truck in the United States?
The federal 25-year rule
Federal import eligibility is a threshold question, not a paperwork detail to solve after shipment. NHTSA states: “A motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS.” A nonconforming vehicle under 25 years old generally cannot be permanently imported unless it qualifies for an applicable exemption and is processed through the registered-importer and compliance pathway.
The age is measured against the vehicle’s manufacture date and the date of import, so verify the exact date for the specific truck. A model that is almost 25 years old does not receive the exemption early. Keep the title, export documents, bill of sale and manufacturer identification records that establish the vehicle’s age and identity.
EPA emissions rules are separate
Meeting the NHTSA safety-age rule does not automatically satisfy emissions requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency describes an over-21-year provision tied to the engine being identical to the engine originally installed in the same model and configuration, and recommends checking with EPA before importing. Engine swaps, modifications or uncertain documentation can affect eligibility even when the vehicle is old enough under the NHTSA rule.
State title and registration
Federal permission to import does not guarantee a title, registration or unrestricted road use in your state. NHTSA explains that state titling and registration are outside its road-operation regulatory role. Before paying a deposit or arranging shipment, contact the motor-vehicle authority in the state where the truck will be titled. Ask specifically about right-hand-drive vehicles, model-year documentation, inspection, emissions testing, insurance, restricted roads and whether the intended use is on public highways, private property or both. Obtain the answer in writing when possible.
Which truck fits common jobs?
Farm and acreage maintenance
A kei truck can be a strong specification-based fit when routes are tight and loads are relatively light: fencing supplies, hand tools, feed bags or small landscaping materials can be moved without bringing a full-size vehicle into narrow spaces. Its 350 kg limit still requires weighing dense cargo, and the two-seat cab limits crew transport.

Urban trades and facilities work
The Minicab’s smaller footprint can simplify access to alleys, courtyards and service lanes. Confirm that the route is legally open to the imported vehicle and that the bed configuration suits your equipment. A Maverick may be preferable for contractors who carry heavier tools, transport several workers or need a vehicle that can be registered and insured through ordinary U.S. channels.
Family and mixed personal use
The Maverick’s seating for up to five makes it the more flexible choice when one vehicle must handle passengers and cargo. Its available towing package and higher stated payload also provide more headroom for trailers and heavier loads, subject to the exact configuration. A two-seat kei truck is better treated as a specialized utility vehicle unless your passenger needs are minimal.
Private property and off-road areas
Four-wheel drive on the Minicab can help on suitable private routes, but the specification alone does not establish ground clearance, traction performance or safe capability on a particular surface. Evaluate the property, load and weather conditions directly, and follow the manufacturer’s limits. Do not infer public-road legality from the fact that a vehicle operates on private land.

Buying checklist for a Japanese mini truck
- Define the operating area. Map the narrowest gate, bridge, trail and parking space, then compare those measurements with the truck including mirrors and any accessories.
- Write down the real load. Weigh the heaviest regular cargo, add passengers and tools, and compare the total with the manufacturer’s payload and axle limits.
- Confirm the exact configuration. Record model year, transmission, 2WD or 4WD, bed style, engine and identification number. Do not assume a specification from one Minicab applies to another.
- Check federal eligibility before shipping. Determine whether the truck is at least 25 years old at import. If it is newer, identify the lawful NHTSA compliance pathway before committing funds.
- Check EPA status separately. Verify the engine’s identity and configuration against EPA guidance, especially if the vehicle has modifications or incomplete records.
- Ask the state authority about title and use. Confirm inspection, emissions, insurance, registration and any restrictions on public-road operation in the destination state.
- Build a landed-cost worksheet. Include purchase, inland transport, freight, insurance, customs, compliance, storage, repairs, taxes, title and registration instead of comparing only the Japanese list price with a U.S. MSRP.
- Inspect documentation and condition. Match the identification number across the truck, export paperwork, bill of sale and title documents. Budget for parts and service only after confirming fitment for the exact model and year.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing currencies as if they were prices in one market. ¥1,311,200 in Japan and $28,145 in the United States do not reveal a U.S. buyer’s final cost.
- Using a generic kei-truck payload. The cited Minicab figure is 350 kg; another body, year or modification may differ. Use the vehicle’s own rating.
- Treating the 25-year rule as a complete approval. NHTSA safety eligibility, EPA emissions compliance and state registration are separate checks.
- Assuming four-wheel drive means unlimited capability. Drive configuration does not provide a towing rating or guarantee safe performance on every surface.
- Mixing fuel-test cycles. WLTC and EPA figures should remain labeled with their test methods and configurations.
- Ignoring payload consumed by people and equipment. The maximum rating includes the truck’s total carried load, not just material in the bed.
- Ordering parts by appearance. Kei trucks can vary by model year, engine, transmission and market. Confirm exact fitment before purchase.
What the published specifications do—and do not—prove
The figures establish a clear dimensional and capacity distinction: the Minicab is much shorter and narrower, carries two people and lists 350 kg of payload; the Maverick is larger, seats up to five and offers up to 1,500 lb of payload in specified configurations. They also show why the vehicles serve different roles.
They do not establish crash-protection equivalence, reliability, resale value, actual fuel economy, ownership cost or legal status in a particular state. No independent comparative test or ownership-cost study is represented by these manufacturer and agency figures. Those questions require vehicle-specific inspection, current state guidance and, where relevant, professional import and compliance advice.
Bottom-line choice
Choose a Japanese kei truck when compact dimensions, low-speed maneuverability and light-duty utility outweigh passenger capacity and payload margin—and only after confirming federal, EPA and state requirements for the exact truck. Choose a U.S. compact pickup such as the 2026 Maverick when you need up to five seats, a higher stated payload ceiling, a documented towing option or a simpler domestic purchase and registration path. The right answer is determined less by the headline price than by where the truck must fit, what it must carry and whether it can legally operate where you live.
