It crossed that auction threshold in 2008, selling for €7,040,000, reported at the time as US$10,894,900. London dealer Joe Macari listed it in 2020, but that report gave no asking price—and does not establish that the car is for sale today.
Which Ferrari was called the first $10-million car?
It was chassis 2377GT, a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder associated with actor James Coburn. The milestone refers to its sale at RM Auctions’ Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event in Maranello on May 23, 2008. New Atlas reported the price as €7,040,000, or US$10,894,900, and described it as the first car sold at auction for more than US$10 million (New Atlas, May 23, 2008).
The dollar figure is the contemporaneous report’s conversion of the euro result; it should not be mistaken for a later valuation or a current asking price.
Was the car back on the market?
New Atlas reported on October 19, 2020, that the car had been listed on Joe Macari’s website in London. The article said no price was quoted and gave no indication of the seller’s expectations (New Atlas, October 19, 2020). That supports saying it was listed in 2020, not that it remains available now.

The same article forecast that the car might sell for more than US$15 million and discussed a possible US$15–20 million range. Those figures were the publisher’s expectations in 2020, not a confirmed sale price. The available reporting here does not establish a later sale or the car’s present status.
What is known about chassis 2377GT?
Ownership history
New Atlas reported that Coburn bought the Ferrari through Garage Francorchamps, owned it for 25 years, and sold it in 1986. The article names Andrew Cohen and Bruce S. Lustman among its subsequent owners before the 2008 auction. The 2008 report also identifies Coburn’s 25-year ownership and says the car was completed on March 3, 1961 (New Atlas, October 19, 2020; New Atlas, May 23, 2008). These are publisher-reported provenance details, rather than independently verified factory-archive records.

Specifications reported
New Atlas’s 2020 account calls 2377GT the thirteenth of 55 short-wheelbase California Spyders built and lists a three-litre engine, 276 hp and a four-speed gearbox. Its 2008 report gives 2,953 cc, 280 hp, three carburettors and a four-speed gearbox. Because the two reports differ on output, the horsepower figures are best kept attributed to their respective reports rather than treated as a single settled specification.

A different 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, chassis 2955 GT, sold at RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale on April 25, 2026, for €16,655,000. RM Sotheby’s identifies it as the 26th of 56 short-wheelbase examples and says it was one of 39 originally configured with covered headlamps (RM Sotheby’s official lot page).

| Car | Sale or listing | Reported price or status |
|---|---|---|
| 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, chassis 2377GT, associated with James Coburn | RM Auctions, Maranello, May 23, 2008 | €7,040,000; reported at the time as US$10,894,900 |
| Same car, chassis 2377GT | Listed by Joe Macari, London, as reported October 19, 2020 | No asking price reported; present availability not established |
| 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, chassis 2955 GT | RM Sotheby’s, Monaco, April 25, 2026 | €16,655,000 |
The 2026 result shows what a separate California Spider achieved; it does not establish a new value, a later sale, or current availability for Coburn’s chassis 2377GT. The chassis numbers matter: these are not the same car.
