The reason is chiefly strategic: Jaguar is repositioning itself as an electric-only luxury marque, with a new family of exclusive vehicles intended to sell in lower volumes at higher prices. That explains the company’s aim, not whether buyers will accept the price or the strategy will succeed.
What Jaguar revealed—and what $130,500 covers
Type 01 is a forthcoming production four-door electric grand tourer built on Jaguar’s dedicated Electric Architecture (JEA). Jaguar announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $130,500; it is not a universal price, nor does it establish the final cost of an option-equipped car in every market. Jaguar’s U.S. launch announcement says orders are expected to open in early 2027. A regional Jaguar release expects first customer deliveries in the second half of 2027.

Type 01 is distinct from Type 00, the non-production design concept Jaguar showed in December 2024. Jaguar described Type 00 as a physical expression of its new creative philosophy and a preview of future models; Type 01 is the subsequently announced production car. The Type 00 announcement framed the concept as part of a broader change in the brand.
Why Jaguar is moving upmarket
A new luxury identity
Jaguar says its transformation is about more than launching electric vehicles: it is rebuilding the marque around an electric-only identity and an elevated family of exclusive luxury cars. The intended customer is different, too. In its 2025 investor presentation, parent company Tata Motors said the repositioned Jaguar would sell at lower volumes and higher prices, targeting a younger, wealthier audience, and described the brand as being repositioned for the luxury market where it had been more successful. The presentation sets out the company’s intended commercial direction, not proof that demand or financial results will follow.

A bespoke platform and a distinctive product
Jaguar says JEA was developed to enable the design and driving experience it wanted, and to help the car stand apart in what the company considers an increasingly homogeneous EV market. The Type 01’s price therefore accompanies a brand reset, a dedicated platform and a low-volume luxury positioning. Jaguar has not published a cost breakdown, so the available information does not show that a particular battery or engineering expense accounts for the price.

Jaguar describes JEA as bespoke and Type 01 as the first production Jaguar built on it. Those performance figures help define the car’s grand-touring proposition, but they do not establish its value relative to rivals.

What the price does—and does not—tell buyers
The $130,500 figure makes the Type 01’s intended market clear: Jaguar is not presenting it as a high-volume, lower-priced EV. Whether it is worth that price is a separate question. The announcement provides a starting MSRP and claimed performance and charging figures, but it does not supply an independent road test or range validation, a final option-price list, or a like-for-like comparison that would establish a value advantage over another electric GT.

Jaguar has also not established the Type 01’s connector, home AC charging rate, compatibility with a particular home charger, incentives, or availability in every market in the cited launch material. Buyers should wait for Jaguar’s market-specific ownership and charging details before choosing equipment or estimating the fully configured cost.
