Choose the body style that matches how you want to use and preserve the car, but do not treat the roadster, fixed-head coupé and drophead coupé as interchangeable investments. The fixed-head coupé (FHC) is the enclosed-roof XK150; the drophead coupé (DHC) and roadster—also called the open two-seater or OTS—are separate open-bodied designs. Because available historical sources do not establish a current price winner, the condition, originality, specification, provenance and documentation of the individual XK150 should decide the purchase.
The short answer: match the body to your priorities, then buy the best documented car
There is no evidence-based rule that one XK150 body style is always the “right” choice or currently worth more than the others. A sensible decision starts with the roof format you actually want, then moves to the particular car in front of you. Two cars with the same body style can differ materially in chassis identity, restoration quality, engine specification, brake equipment, originality and paperwork.

| Body style | What it is | Historically established timing | JagXK production count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-head coupé (FHC) | Enclosed-roof coupé | One of the two launch bodies in May 1957 | 4,445 |
| Drophead coupé (DHC) | Open coupé body; distinct from the roadster | One of the two launch bodies in May 1957 | 2,672 |
| Roadster/open two-seater (OTS) | Open two-seater | Followed nearly a year later; initially left-hand drive for export only | 2,265 |
The three JagXK style counts total 9,382 cars. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust’s collection pages instead state that 9,385 XK150s were produced. Those totals conflict, so the figures should be quoted with their source rather than combined or presented as an uncontested production register. The style counts are from JagXK’s XK overview; the 9,385 total appears in the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust drophead description and its fixed-head coupé description.

Fixed-head coupé (FHC)
The FHC has a permanently enclosed roof and was part of the XK150’s May 1957 launch. It is the straightforward choice if an enclosed coupé body is the central reason you are buying an XK150. Confirm that the car is genuinely an FHC by checking its chassis and body records, not merely a seller’s description or a later restoration configuration.

Drophead coupé (DHC)
The DHC was also available at launch, but it is not simply a roadster with different terminology. It is a separate open coupé body style. A DHC listing should therefore be checked against the car’s identity documents and period specification rather than grouped with every other open XK150.
Roadster or open two-seater (OTS)
In XK150 references, “roadster” commonly means the open two-seater, abbreviated OTS. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust dates this body’s appearance to nearly a year after the initial FHC and DHC launch and says it was initially offered only in left-hand drive for export. That chronology can help identify an implausible specification, especially on an early car, but it does not by itself prove that a particular example is incorrect.
Chronology matters when you assess an XK150
The XK150 first appeared in May 1957 as a fixed-head coupé and drophead coupé. The open two-seater followed nearly a year later. Exact transition dates can vary by market and production sequence, so use the chronology as a verification prompt rather than a substitute for a factory record.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust describes the XK150 as “the third and final stage in the evolution of the XK concept.” That description is useful context: the model is the final XK development, but body style alone does not identify the engine, brakes or equipment fitted to an individual car.
Engine and brake specifications: verify the car, not the badge
Body style does not determine the XK150’s power output. The Heritage Trust lists several engine and specification levels, and the figures below should be read as period claims attributed to that source.
| Engine/specification | Power quoted by the Heritage Trust | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4-litre standard | 190 bhp | Standard figure listed by the Trust |
| 3.4-litre Special Equipment | 210 bhp | Special Equipment figure listed by the Trust |
| 3.4-litre S | 250 bhp | The Trust describes the S as an early 1959 introduction on its FHC page; its DHC entry also places the introduction in 1959 |
| 3.8-litre | 220 bhp gross | Gross output, as explicitly identified by the Trust |
| 3.8-litre S | 265 bhp gross | Gross output, as explicitly identified by the Trust |
The Trust also reports an independent road test reaching 136 mph (219 km/h) for the 3.8-litre S. That is an attributed historic test result, not a promise of the speed a present-day, decades-old car will achieve. Engine rebuild quality, tuning, gearing, tyres and maintenance all need to be established on the individual example.

Brake descriptions require similar care. The Trust says the standard model appeared in the catalogue with drum brakes, while production cars were Special Equipment with four-wheel disc brakes; its FHC entry qualifies this as a belief that “virtually all” production cars were SE. Treat that as the Trust’s account, then inspect the car’s actual calipers, discs, lines and documentation. Do not infer brake equipment from FHC, DHC or OTS body style.

How to choose between FHC, DHC and OTS
Choose the FHC when an enclosed roof is non-negotiable
Select an FHC when your defining requirement is the fixed-roof coupé format. Its historical identity is clear, and it avoids the open-body distinction between DHC and OTS. The important buying question is then whether the particular FHC retains the specification and structure represented by its records. A highly altered FHC may be a poorer historic purchase than a well-documented car in another body style.
Choose the DHC when you specifically want the drophead body
A DHC is appropriate when the drophead coupé identity itself matters. Do not let a seller’s use of “convertible” or “roadster” erase the distinction: the DHC and OTS are separate XK150 body styles with different production histories. Confirm the body designation, chassis number, engine details and restoration history before discussing whether the car is fairly priced.

Choose the OTS when the open two-seater is the point
The OTS is the choice for a buyer who wants that specific open two-seater format and accepts its later introduction in the XK150 timeline. Early export-only, left-hand-drive availability is a useful historical check. A right-hand-drive car or an early claimed build is not automatically wrong, but it deserves documentary verification rather than assumption.
When you are undecided, let the individual car break the tie
If you would be happy with either an enclosed or open body, compare actual cars on equal terms: chassis identity, metalwork, corrosion repair, panel alignment, paint quality, interior work, engine number, gearbox, brake conversion or originality, ownership history and invoices. The available sources do not establish a body-style-specific current price advantage, usability ranking or investment forecast. A better-preserved, better-documented example can therefore be the rational choice even if it is not your first body-style preference.

- Confirm the body style. Record whether the car is an FHC, DHC or OTS and compare that description with the chassis, registration and factory documentation. Be alert to restorations that have changed panels, roofs or trim.
- Establish the car’s identity. Photograph and record chassis and engine numbers, then reconcile them with invoices, old registrations, club records and restoration files. A claimed S specification should be supported by evidence, not only badges or painted engine parts.
- Check the engine and output claim. Identify whether the car is a 3.4-litre or 3.8-litre and whether the seller is claiming standard, Special Equipment or S status. Compare the claim with the period specification and note that the Trust’s 3.8-litre figures are gross.
- Inspect the brakes directly. Determine whether the car has drums or four-wheel discs, inspect wear and hydraulic condition, and establish whether any conversion is documented. The catalogue-versus-production qualification means you should not accept a generalized statement about all XK150s.
- Separate original work from restoration work. Ask which panels, trim, mechanical components and instruments are original, rebuilt, replaced or reproduced. Require photographs and invoices for major repairs, especially structural metalwork.
- Evaluate corrosion and previous repairs. Use an independent inspection familiar with XK construction. Look for concealed filler, poorly joined metal, uneven gaps, moisture damage and repairs that are absent from the written history.
- Audit provenance. Build a dated ownership and maintenance timeline. Gaps do not automatically disqualify a car, but unexplained gaps should affect confidence and the price you are prepared to pay.
- Price the evidence, not the rarity slogan. Production counts can help explain why examples are discussed as distinct, but the conflicting overall totals show why a single rarity number should not decide a purchase.
Using production numbers without over-interpreting them
JagXK lists 2,265 OTS, 4,445 FHC and 2,672 DHC cars, for 9,382 XK150s. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust gives 9,385 XK150s overall. The three style figures are useful for understanding the historical mix, but they are not a current survival count and do not reveal how many cars remain original, roadworthy or documented.

Consequently, “the rarest body style” is not a complete buying argument. A surviving car’s authenticity, condition and history can matter more to the decision than a three-car difference between published production totals or an unverified claim about how many examples remain.
Documentation and parts research for a restoration
If the car needs restoration, use a model-specific reference alongside the inspection. The Jaguar XK parts catalogue’s “Using This Catalogue” section includes XK150 style listings and can help identify parts by body type. It is a research aid, not proof that a component on a particular car is original, complete or correctly fitted. Verify the edition, completeness and availability of any parts before committing to a restoration schedule.
Keep restoration decisions tied to the car’s documented identity. Replacing missing trim with a correct-looking part may improve appearance, but it does not establish that the car left the factory with that specification. Record every substitution so a future owner can distinguish surviving material from reproduction work.
What the available evidence cannot tell you
- It does not establish a current comparative price for FHC, DHC and OTS cars.
- It does not prove that any body style is a better investment.
- It does not provide a modern usability, weather-sealing, luggage or comfort ranking.
- It does not make every XK150 a Special Equipment car with discs; inspect the individual vehicle.
- It does not settle the 9,382-versus-9,385 production-total discrepancy.
Those limits are reasons to demand a proper inspection and records, not reasons to invent a winner. If two cars are otherwise equal, select the body style you will genuinely enjoy and maintain; if they are not equal, favor the stronger evidence and condition over a generalized body-style theory.
A decision checklist before you buy
- Have you decided whether you want an enclosed FHC or an open DHC/OTS before looking at color and trim?
- Does the advertised body style match the chassis and historical documentation?
- Is the engine size and claimed specification documented?
- Are the brakes identified by physical inspection rather than a catalogue assumption?
- Do restoration invoices show what is original, rebuilt or reproduced?
- Is the ownership timeline coherent enough to support the seller’s provenance claim?
- Has an independent specialist inspected corrosion, structure and mechanical condition?
- Are you comparing actual cars rather than assuming a current price or investment winner by body style?
Verdict
Buy the FHC if the fixed roof is the essential XK150 experience; buy the DHC or OTS only when you have identified which open body you actually want. Then choose the example with the clearest identity, strongest condition and best documentation. The historical record distinguishes the three bodies, engines and production figures, but it does not justify a blanket claim that one is currently cheaper, more valuable or a better investment.
