Jaguar Type 01 and Range Rover Velar are not direct class rivals. Type 01 is a low, all-electric four-door grand tourer that introduces Jaguar’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Velar is a mid-size luxury SUV shaped around Range Rover’s restrained, reductive design language. The key choice is therefore body style and brand direction: Type 01 represents Jaguar’s new electric performance-luxury era, while Velar provides the upright SUV form and integrated luxury associated with Range Rover.
Jaguar Type 01 vs. Range Rover Velar at a glance
| Category | Jaguar Type 01 | Range Rover Velar |

| Announced timing | Production expected in 2027; orders expected in early 2027; first deliveries anticipated in the second half of 2027 | Detailed figures below come from the February 2023 refresh announcement, not a universal 2026 specification |
| Published electric-range figure | Up to 400 miles EPA-estimated range; up to 320 miles at a sustained 75 mph, according to Jaguar’s October 2026 announcement | Up to 64 km (40 miles) of pure-electric range for the P400e in the 2023 announcement |
| Published performance figure | Up to 1,030 PS, 1,365 Nm and 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, all manufacturer-stated | The cited refresh release does not establish a directly comparable acceleration or output figure for the whole range |
Those differences matter more than a conventional trim-by-trim comparison. Type 01’s proportions, battery-electric architecture and launch timing describe a new Jaguar grand tourer. Velar’s higher-riding body and Range Rover design cues describe a different job within JLR’s portfolio.

What the Jaguar Type 01 is
A four-door GT, not an SUV
Jaguar unveiled Type 01 on 7 October 2026 as a luxury four-door GT. “GT” signals a long-distance grand-touring brief and a body shaped around a low, extended silhouette rather than SUV proportions. Jaguar’s launch material calls it “the first of a new era” and describes a combination of dramatic design, craftsmanship and innovation. It is not an SUV, and the Type 01 name does not indicate a crossover body style.
Type 01 is also the first production Jaguar built on Jaguar Electric Architecture. JEA is Jaguar’s dedicated electric-vehicle platform, so the car’s identity is tied to an all-electric powertrain rather than an internal-combustion model adapted with a battery. The October 2026 announcement gives planned, not completed, milestones: production is expected to begin in 2027, orders are expected to open in early 2027, and first customer deliveries are anticipated in the second half of 2027.

Low, long and intentionally theatrical
Jaguar’s official design description centres on a low roofline, short front overhang, long bonnet and extended rear overhang. These proportions make the bonnet and cabin relationship a central visual feature: the passenger compartment sits within a long, low GT form instead of the taller two-box profile of an SUV. The car is specified with 23-inch wheels, another cue that its visual emphasis is stance and presence.
Aerodynamics are part of the design story rather than a separate engineering footnote. Jaguar says active vanes, a three-stage deployable spoiler and other airflow optimisation produce a 0.23 drag coefficient. That number is a manufacturer claim from Jaguar’s 2026 product description, not an independent test result, and production specifications can vary by market.
Electric range, charging and performance claims
Jaguar’s 7 October 2026 launch announcement gives Type 01 an expected range of up to 400 miles on the EPA estimate cycle. The same announcement says the car can deliver up to 320 miles at a sustained 75 mph. The two figures describe different test contexts: the EPA number is an official estimated cycle figure, while the 75-mph number is a constant-speed highway estimate. Neither should be treated as a guarantee in every temperature, traffic, tyre or driving condition.
On charging, Jaguar says Type 01 can add up to 200 miles of range in as little as 13 minutes when connected to a 350 kW DC charger. “Up to” and “as little as” are important qualifications: the result depends on charger capability, battery state of charge, temperature and other conditions identified in the launch material. A 350 kW site is required to pursue that headline rate; the vehicle will not receive 350 kW from a lower-rated installation.
Jaguar quotes up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm of torque, with 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds. These are manufacturer-stated targets for Type 01, not independently verified test results. Final homologated figures may differ when production and market certification are complete.

Why Type 01 is not the same as Type 00
Jaguar introduced Type 00 in December 2024 as a design-vision concept. Jaguar’s own Type 00 page labels it a non-production vehicle. Type 01 is the later production-vehicle name announced in October 2026, while Type 00 previewed the design direction. Treating the two names as interchangeable obscures the distinction between a concept and a car intended for customer production.
The “Type” naming also has a stated meaning. Jaguar says “Type” refers to the marque’s predecessors, “0” signifies zero tailpipe emissions and “1” identifies the first vehicle in a new generation. The explanation connects the name to Jaguar history, electric propulsion and the start of a new product sequence.
What the Range Rover Velar is
A mid-size luxury SUV
Velar occupies the mid-size luxury SUV category. That body style, rather than a performance number, is the clearest contrast with Type 01. Velar’s elevated SUV architecture gives Range Rover a model for buyers who specifically want an SUV form, while Type 01 uses a low four-door GT silhouette.
The detailed official refresh material available for this comparison is JLR’s February 2023 announcement. It describes Velar as a pure expression of modern luxury and presents the exterior as clean and reductive. Because that release is dated, its engine availability, price and equipment should not be read as a complete specification for every 2026 market or model year.
Range Rover’s reductive design language
Velar’s exterior uses a floating roof, an unbroken waistline, flush deployable door handles, slim LED lighting and hidden tailpipes. These elements are integrated into smooth surfaces instead of being displayed as separate visual hardware. JLR described Velar as a pioneer of Range Rover’s reductive design philosophy.

Professor Gerry McGovern, JLR’s chief creative officer, called the refreshed Velar “a flawless example of our modernist design philosophy – clean, reductive and compellingly desirable” in the 2023 Range Rover media release. That is a design-positioning statement from the manufacturer, not an objective rating. In practical comparison, Velar’s visual language is restrained and integrated, while Type 01’s low stance, long bonnet and active aerodynamic devices are deliberately dramatic.

Cabin treatment and material choice
The 2023 refresh centred the dashboard around a floating 11.4-inch curved touchscreen. JLR also announced a leather-free cabin option using Kvadrat wool and Ultrafabrics textile. Those details show how Velar’s interior follows the same calm, pared-back design approach as its exterior. They do not establish a universal equipment list for every current Velar sold worldwide, so buyers should confirm the screen, upholstery and trim specification for their market and model year.
Velar’s 2023 powertrain context
JLR’s February 2023 release described an available P400e plug-in hybrid, along with petrol and diesel engines using mild-hybrid technology. It quoted up to 64 km (40 miles) of pure-electric range for the P400e. That is a dated manufacturer figure for the refreshed model described at the time, and it is not directly comparable with Type 01’s EPA-estimated range because the vehicles use different powertrain types and the figures come from different announcements.
The same release listed the updated Velar for UK order from £54,045 on-the-road. That was the price in the original UK refresh announcement, not a current global price. Taxes, equipment, incentives, exchange rates and model-year changes can all alter the amount a buyer sees today.
How the designs differ
Proportion: GT drama versus SUV composure
Type 01 communicates its role through proportion. The low roof, long bonnet and extended rear overhang create a stretched profile associated with grand touring. The 23-inch wheels reinforce the visual emphasis on stance. Jaguar’s active vanes and deployable spoiler make the airflow system visible in the design narrative, even when those elements are retracted.

Velar communicates its role through reduction. The floating roof, uninterrupted waistline, flush handles and hidden tailpipes minimise visual breaks. Slim lamps and smooth bodywork make the SUV appear deliberately composed rather than overtly technical. Neither approach is inherently better: they answer different expectations of modern luxury.
Surface treatment and visual technology
Type 01 uses aerodynamic hardware to support its low GT shape. Velar integrates its functional details into the body so that handles, lighting and exhaust outlets recede from view. The contrast is best understood as expressive versus restrained, not as a measured score for styling quality. Those descriptions synthesise Jaguar and Range Rover’s own design language; they do not claim that one vehicle has objectively superior aesthetics.
Interior priorities signalled by the design
Velar’s announced 11.4-inch curved display and leather-free material option show a cabin designed around visual calm and material choice. Type 01’s launch messaging instead foregrounds a new Jaguar era, electric architecture and a dramatic GT presence. The available material does not provide a complete Type 01 interior specification, so it would be premature to claim differences in seating space, luggage capacity, ride comfort or cabin quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How their brand roles differ inside JLR
JLR describes Jaguar, Range Rover, Defender and Discovery as distinct brands, each with its own DNA and interpretation of modern luxury. Type 01 is therefore not simply a Range Rover-style vehicle with a different badge. It inaugurates Jaguar’s new electric luxury direction and places the marque’s identity on a dedicated EV platform.
Velar belongs to Range Rover. Its clean surfaces, floating roof and integrated details carry the brand’s reductive design philosophy into the mid-size SUV segment. The two vehicles can share a corporate parent while still serving separate purposes: Jaguar uses Type 01 to establish a new electric GT identity, while Range Rover uses Velar to express modern luxury in an SUV form.

Powertrain and specification figures: what can and cannot be compared
| Figure | Type 01 | Velar reference | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Jaguar Electric Architecture; all-electric | The 2023 refresh listed P400e plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel mild-hybrid choices | Type 01 is an EV from its basic architecture; Velar’s offering depends on market and model year |
| Range | Up to 400 miles EPA-estimated, manufacturer announcement dated October 2026 | Up to 64 km (40 miles) electric range for the P400e, manufacturer announcement dated February 2023 | Different vehicles, test contexts and dates; not an apples-to-apples efficiency ranking |
| Highway estimate | Up to 320 miles at a sustained 75 mph, according to Jaguar | Not stated in the cited Velar material | Use as a stated constant-speed estimate, not a guarantee in normal driving |
| DC charging | Up to 200 miles in as little as 13 minutes on a 350 kW DC charger, according to Jaguar | Not stated in the cited Velar material | Requires suitable equipment and favourable conditions |
| Output | Up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm, manufacturer-stated | Not stated as a range-wide comparable figure in the cited release | Do not infer Velar output from Type 01’s figures |
| Acceleration | 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, manufacturer-stated | Not stated in the cited release | Type 01 figure remains subject to final production and homologation details |
| Drag coefficient | 0.23, attributed by Jaguar to active vanes, deployable spoiler and airflow optimisation | Not stated in the cited Velar material | Manufacturer aerodynamic claim, not an independent test |
JLR’s 2025 reporting describes a flexible powertrain strategy across the company, with market demand influencing the mix. That context explains why Velar’s engine and hybrid availability cannot be assumed from one 2023 release, and why Type 01’s announced electric specification should be checked again when orders open.
Which vehicle fits which requirement?
Choose the Type 01 concept if your priority is an electric GT
- You want a four-door grand-tourer silhouette rather than an SUV body.
- You are interested in Jaguar’s first production vehicle on JEA and its new electric-luxury direction.
- The announced figures for up to 400 miles of EPA-estimated range, 350 kW charging capability and 3.2-second 0–62 mph acceleration match your priorities, subject to final certification.
- You are prepared to evaluate a vehicle whose production, ordering and delivery dates remain announced plans for 2027.
Choose the Velar role if your priority is a mid-size luxury SUV
- You specifically want an SUV form rather than a low GT profile.
- You prefer Range Rover’s clean, reductive exterior and integrated details.
- The 11.4-inch curved touchscreen and available leather-free material approach described in the 2023 refresh are relevant to your specification.
- You need to verify the current engine, plug-in-hybrid, equipment and price details for your country instead of relying on the 2023 UK announcement.
Do not use the comparison to assume unreported qualities
The cited material does not establish Type 01 or Velar superiority in off-road ability, passenger room, luggage capacity, ride comfort, towing, reliability or ownership cost. Those are separate questions requiring market-specific specifications and independent testing. The defensible distinction here is role: electric GT versus mid-size luxury SUV.
Availability, dates and buying caveats
Type 01’s October 2026 timing is forward-looking. Jaguar expected orders to open in early 2027, production to begin in 2027 and first deliveries to arrive in the second half of 2027. These are plans stated at launch and can change. Price, final equipment, homologation, charging performance and range should be confirmed when Jaguar publishes ordering information for your market.

Engine choices, trim names, tax treatment and standard equipment can change by model year and country.
For either vehicle, compare a dated manufacturer claim with the exact vehicle available to you. Confirm battery or engine choice, charging hardware, warranty, taxes, delivery timing and local incentives before placing an order.
The bottom line
Jaguar Type 01 and Range Rover Velar express modern JLR luxury through opposite vehicle forms. Type 01 is a low, dramatic, all-electric four-door GT that launches Jaguar’s JEA era, with manufacturer-announced targets of up to 400 miles of EPA-estimated range, 200 miles added in as little as 13 minutes on a 350 kW charger, and 0–62 mph in 3.2 seconds. Velar is a mid-size Range Rover SUV whose floating roof, clean surfaces, flush handles and integrated lighting embody a more restrained design philosophy. If the decision starts with body style and brand identity, the answer is straightforward: Type 01 for Jaguar’s new electric GT direction, Velar for Range Rover’s reductive luxury SUV role.
