How to compare two used F-Types
- Prefer a car with continuous maintenance records and invoices, especially documentation of cooling-system work.
- Confirm the VIN-specific recall status and obtain proof that completed remedies were recorded.
- Compare cold-start behavior, warm-running behavior, coolant level and evidence of leaks rather than relying on model-year reputation.
- Operate all displays, switches, lights, audio equipment and driver controls.
- Have a qualified technician perform a diagnostic scan and pre-purchase inspection.
- Get written local repair estimates that identify parts, labor, taxes, fees and related work.
Common problem areas and the warning signs to look for
Cooling system and water pump
Cooling-system condition is one of the most important inspection points. RepairPal’s guidance for a 2015 F-Type coolant leak lists loose hose connections, radiator damage and water-pump failure as possible causes. Leaks and unusual noises can accompany a failing pump, but those symptoms do not prove that the pump is the cause on a particular vehicle.
Before buying, inspect the expansion tank and hose connections for a low level, dried coolant residue or fresh fluid. Look under the front of the car and around the radiator for wetness or staining. During a cold start, listen for abnormal pump-area noise; after the car reaches operating temperature, watch for a temperature warning, steam or an unusually aggressive cooling fan. A low-coolant warning, visible leak, persistent noise or overheating concern warrants professional diagnosis rather than topping up and ignoring it.
A 2021 Jaguar service action for certain 2019–2021 F-Type vehicles described a coolant-pump quality issue that could produce excessive cooling-fan noise and eventually reduce cooling performance. Jaguar stated that repairs for eligible affected vehicles would be performed at no charge. Applicability is determined by the individual VIN and service records, not simply by the year shown on the registration.

Electrical systems and infotainment
Survey reporting has included warning lights and malfunctioning infotainment among F-Type electrical concerns. These reports are broad categories, not a universal failure pattern. On a viewing, turn the car on without immediately starting the engine and check that every warning light illuminates for its self-test and then goes out as expected. Test the central display, audio, navigation if fitted, Bluetooth or phone integration, climate controls, seat functions, windows, mirrors, exterior lighting and steering-wheel controls.
Intermittent faults deserve the same attention as a permanently displayed warning. Ask the seller not to clear codes before the inspection, and have a technician scan the relevant control modules with suitable equipment. A warning light is a prompt to investigate; it is not a diagnosis. Several unrelated faults can produce similar dashboard messages, and a code may identify a circuit or system without proving which component must be replaced.
Engine, transmission and other mechanical systems
The available survey summary mentions occasional engine failures, but it does not establish an incidence rate or identify a single engine family as the weak point. It also does not provide a reliable, year-by-year transmission comparison. Do not turn a general survey category into a claim that all F-Types share a particular engine or gearbox defect.

At inspection, look for a clean cold start, stable idle, smooth throttle response and normal temperature behavior. Check for oil or coolant contamination, smoke that persists after warm-up, unusual tapping or rattling and a history of repeated warning lights. During a road test, the transmission should engage without unexplained delay, harsh impact or flare in engine speed. Any abnormal behavior should be confirmed with a specialist and a written estimate; the symptom alone cannot identify the failed part.

Jaguar’s recall bulletins illustrate why a VIN search is essential. Bulletin J044, dated October 28, 2014, covered certain 2015 F-Type (X152), XF and XJ vehicles with a potential assembly issue involving the primary drive belt and associated front-of-engine components. Jaguar listed 272 potentially affected vehicles across those three model lines combined. That number is not an F-Type-only count and is not a reliability rate.
Bulletin J055, dated September 21, 2015, described one potentially affected 2016 F-Type vehicle involving steering-gear software. “One” refers to the potentially affected vehicle identified in that campaign, not to all 2016 cars or to the likelihood of a steering problem in the model generally.

NHTSA explains that its VIN lookup can show unrepaired recalls associated with a particular vehicle. A year, make and model search instead returns general recalls, investigations, complaints and manufacturer communications. Run the VIN search, ask the seller for repair orders and, when records are incomplete, have a Jaguar service provider confirm campaign status.
How to document a completed campaign
- Record the complete 17-character VIN from the vehicle and title or registration.
- Check the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and compare the result with the seller’s records.
- Ask for the repair order showing the campaign number, date and mileage.
- If the result is open or the paperwork is unclear, call a Jaguar service department with the VIN before committing to the purchase.
- Keep the written confirmation with the vehicle’s maintenance file.
A recall remedy addresses the specified campaign condition. It does not guarantee that an older cooling hose, pump, battery, infotainment module or unrelated component will not need paid repair.
Repair costs: what can be stated with confidence
Repair pricing is highly sensitive to model year, engine, location, parts source, labor rate, taxes, shop procedures and related work discovered during disassembly. RepairPal also publishes an average annual F-Type repair-cost figure, but that number combines a broad vehicle population. It should not be treated as the expected bill for one owner because age, mileage, location and shop choice vary. For a suspected pump problem, diagnosis followed by a written, itemized estimate is more useful than an unqualified annual average.
Questions to ask when comparing quotes
- Does the price include pressure testing or other diagnosis, or only component replacement?
- Is the pump an original-equipment, equivalent-quality or economy part?
- Are coolant, seals, belts, hoses and disposal included?
- Will the shop refill and bleed the system and verify operating temperature?
- Are taxes, fees and a warranty period listed separately?
- What additional work is recommended now, and what is merely optional maintenance?
Pre-purchase inspection procedure

Is a 2018 F-Type a good choice?
A 2018 car cannot be labeled a good or bad reliability choice from the available evidence alone.
