That does not make the J5 an automatic value winner: it is an SUV and the MG4 is a hatchback, the listed trims are not equivalent, and their published range figures come from different markets and test cycles. Choose the J5 if lower entry price, SUV clearance and flexible luggage space are your priorities; choose the MG4 if its hatchback format, rear-wheel-drive variant, connected features or locally specified charging package better fit your use. Obtain matched, written Indonesian quotes before deciding.
What this comparison covers
This is an Indonesia-focused comparison because current local manufacturer pages publish prices for both vehicles. The figures are a snapshot of those pages, not a universal global price list. The MG4 figures are explicitly quoted as OTR Jakarta; taxes, registration, dealer fees, promotions and financing can change the amount you actually pay. The exact model year and equipment attached to a dealer quote also matter.

The comparison is between two different types of electric car. Jaecoo positions the J5 EV as an SUV, while MG sells the MG4 as a hatchback. That distinction affects seating access, ground clearance, luggage loading and the way each car fits a parking space. A cheaper sticker price is only one part of value.

Indonesia prices: the J5 starts lower, but the trims are not matched

On these listings, the J5 Standard has the lower entry price. The comparison is not a same-trim contest: the J5 figure is for its Standard version, whereas the MG4 entry figure is for Magnify, and the cars have different body styles and specifications. Compare a written quote for the specific trim you would actually buy, including registration, insurance, accessories, home-charger installation and financing charges.

A third-party comparison page updated on 17 August 2026 showed an MG4 starting figure of IDR 345,000,000. That conflicts with the current MG Indonesia page, so it should not be used as the current price. Treat the manufacturer listing as the better starting reference, then ask a dealer to confirm the live OTR amount and stock.
Body style and everyday practicality
Jaecoo J5 EV: SUV priorities
The J5 EV is presented as an SUV with 200 mm of ground clearance. That clearance can be useful on uneven roads, steep driveways and flood-prone streets, although clearance alone does not guarantee safe passage through deep water. Its luggage compartment is specified at 480 litres, expanding to 1,180 litres with the rear seats folded. The two figures describe the same vehicle in different seating configurations; they are not a comparison with a hatchback’s measurement method.
MG4 EV: hatchback priorities
The MG4 is a hatchback. The Indonesian page lists 4,287 mm length, 1,836 mm width, 1,516 mm height and a 2,705 mm wheelbase. A lower hatchback body can feel easier to place in a garage or car park, while its tailgate gives access to the rear load area. The published dimensions do not establish the MG4’s luggage volume, so do not infer a litre-for-litre cargo advantage from them.
Which shape suits you?
- Choose the J5 format if high clearance, an SUV seating position or the stated folded-seat cargo capacity matters more than a lower roofline.
- Choose the MG4 format if you prefer a lower hatchback, want a compact footprint with a long wheelbase, or do not need SUV clearance.
- Test the actual loading task: bring a child seat, suitcase, bicycle or work equipment to the dealer. Published dimensions cannot tell you whether the opening and floor shape fit your items.
Range: why the published numbers cannot be ranked directly

WLTP and NEDC are different laboratory test cycles, and a result from one cannot be converted into a fair ranking against the other without a defined methodology. Market, battery size, wheels, software, temperature and trim also change the result. The 402 km WLTP figure belongs to an Australian specification sheet, while the 540 km NEDC claim belongs to an Indonesian MG4 page. The European 545 km WLTP claim concerns another 77 kWh model. None of these three numbers is a like-for-like Indonesia comparison.

The practical question is whether the exact Indonesian car you are offered has a documented range under the same test cycle as the alternative. Ask the dealer for the battery capacity, official test cycle, wheel-and-tyre configuration and any separate city/highway figures. Plan a realistic reserve for air-conditioning, traffic, rain, speed and battery ageing rather than treating the headline number as a guaranteed trip distance.

These charging figures use different battery windows, so the times are not directly comparable. A 30–80% session adds a different amount of energy than a 10–80% session. Peak power is also not a constant: the car may taper as the battery fills, and temperature, state of charge, charger capability and battery condition affect the result. The J5 sheet itself warns that charging time varies with conditions.
The 58.9 kWh J5 figure is explicitly overseas context and must not be presented as the Indonesian car’s confirmed battery specification. Likewise, the 64 kWh and up-to-144 kW details come from a dated July 2025 MG announcement about a limited MG4 EV Max, while the current local product page uses 140 kW in its charging description. Ask which battery and software version are installed in the car on the dealer’s lot.
Home charging matters more than peak numbers for many owners
If most charging happens overnight, an adequate AC installation and a reliable parking space can matter more than a short public DC stop. Before signing, confirm whether a portable or wall-mounted charger is included, the required electrical capacity, installation distance and any condominium or landlord approval. Public charging availability on your regular routes should be checked separately; neither model’s manufacturer page establishes a complete nationwide network or your local station reliability.

Equipment, assistance systems and connected functions
The current Indonesian Jaecoo page shows trim-specific equipment, including a panoramic roof and 13.2-inch display on the Premium version. The MG Indonesia page promotes driver-assistance functions and i-SMART connected features. Those descriptions are not a standardized equipment test, and the current Indonesian manufacturer pages do not state that every function is fitted to every trim or that the systems perform identically.
Request a written equipment sheet for the exact VIN or trim. Check adaptive cruise-control behavior, lane support, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot alerts, camera coverage, parking sensors, airbag count, tyre size, phone integration and whether connected services require a subscription or have geographic limitations. A feature listed in marketing copy is not proof that it is active in your market, included on the lower trim or supported for the life of the vehicle.
Ownership value that the published prices do not settle
No comparable Indonesian total-cost-of-ownership calculation was established for these cars. Warranty length and exclusions, service intervals, labour rates, battery coverage, insurance premiums, financing rates, electricity tariffs, public-charging fees, tyre prices and resale demand can change the result substantially.

- Vehicle price on the date of quotation, with OTR location and every tax or registration item.
- Warranty duration and mileage limits for the complete car, battery and high-voltage components.
- Scheduled-service operations, interval and price for at least the first five years.
- Parts availability, roadside assistance and the nearest authorized service center.
- Insurance quotation for your address and driver profile.
- Finance interest rate, down payment, administrative fees and total repayment, if borrowing.
- Home-charging hardware, installation scope and electrical-upgrade cost.
- Battery state-of-health checks and the process for a future warranty claim.
Do not assume that the lower purchase price guarantees lower ownership cost. Conversely, do not assume that a higher-priced hatchback recovers its premium through efficiency or resale value; those claims require local, trim-matched evidence.

How to decide which one is better value for your use
The J5 EV is the stronger fit when
- Your budget is anchored to the lowest current Indonesian listing and the Standard trim contains the equipment you need.
- You regularly encounter rough approaches, speed bumps or roads where 200 mm of stated clearance is useful.
- You carry bulky items and can use the SUV’s stated 480-litre load area or 1,180 litres with the rear seats folded.
- You can accept that the current Indonesian Jaecoo page did not state a range figure and will obtain the exact battery and test-cycle data from the dealer.
The MG4 is the stronger fit when
- You prefer a hatchback driving position and dimensions rather than an SUV body.
- The Magnify or Magnify Max equipment list, driver assistance and i-SMART functions solve needs the J5 trim does not.
- The locally quoted battery, charging window and public-charging access suit your longer trips.
- You are willing to pay the higher listed amount for the specific trim and receive written warranty and service terms that justify it.
Use a matched comparison, not a headline-price contest
- Choose one city and the same purchase date for both quotes.
- Select the trims whose safety and comfort equipment you actually require.
- Record battery capacity, drivetrain, wheel size and official range test cycle for each quote.
- Compare charging from the same state-of-charge window and note the maximum charger power each car can use.
- Price insurance, financing, scheduled service and home charging for your address.
- Drive both cars on the roads you use, load your normal cargo and test rear-seat access.
- Read the warranty, roadside-assistance and battery terms before paying a deposit.
Common comparison mistakes
Treating overseas specifications as Indonesian equipment
The Australian J5 sheet is useful context but does not certify the Indonesian J5’s battery, range or charging hardware. Label it as overseas whenever it is mentioned, and rely on the local VIN or specification sheet for a purchase decision.
Putting NEDC and WLTP in one ranking
The MG4’s Indonesian headline is NEDC, while the overseas J5 figure is WLTP. A larger NEDC number is not automatically a longer real-world range than a smaller WLTP number.
Comparing different charge windows
MG’s local claim uses 10–80%; the J5 overseas claim uses 30–80%. The percentages and test conditions must match before a time comparison is meaningful.
Assuming a feature list proves value
Panoramic roofs, large screens, driver assistance and connected apps have value only if they are on the quoted trim, work in your region and remain supported. Verify them in the car and in the contract.

Using an old or conflicting price
Prices can change without a model redesign. The conflicting third-party MG4 figure demonstrates why a current manufacturer page and dealer quotation should take precedence over an older comparison page.
Questions to ask at the dealer
- Is this the Indonesian-market J5 Standard, J5 Premium, MG4 Magnify or Magnify Max, and what is the model year?
- What is the battery’s usable and gross capacity, and what official test cycle produced the stated range?
- What AC and DC charging limits apply to this exact car, and what percentage window was used for the quoted time?
- Which driver-assistance functions are standard on this trim, and can they be demonstrated safely?
- What is included in the OTR quote, and which items are optional or promotional?
- Where will warranty work and high-voltage repairs be performed?
- Can the dealer provide the warranty booklet, service schedule and battery-claim procedure before a deposit?
Verdict: which electric car offers better value?
The Jaecoo J5 EV offers the more compelling entry-price proposition in this Indonesia snapshot, provided its Standard trim meets your needs and the dealer confirms the quoted OTR total. Its SUV form, stated ground clearance and flexible luggage figures also make it the more practical choice for buyers who need those attributes.
The MG4 can be better value for a buyer who specifically wants a hatchback and finds the local Magnify or Magnify Max specification, connected functions, assistance systems and charging package worth the premium. Its advertised range and charging claims should be judged only against the exact Indonesian trim and their stated NEDC or charging conditions.
