Jack Doherty’s $200,000 McLaren Crash: What the Livestream Shows

Jack Doherty’s 2024 McLaren crash was real—but the viral story needs context. Here’s what the footage, police citation and follow-up reporting establish about the rain, phone use, injuries, car, legal case and Kick ban.

Jack Doherty’s crash was real, but several viral summaries get the details wrong. On October 5, 2024, the 20-year-old creator lost control of a customized 2019 McLaren 570S on the wet, southbound Florida Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, near Cutler Bay, during a Kick livestream. The video appears to show him looking down at a handheld phone shortly before the car hit a roadside barrier. Doherty was not reported to have suffered a serious injury; his passenger and cameraman, identified in later reporting as Michael David, sustained facial injuries and received stitches.

The verified legal consequence was a Florida Highway Patrol citation for operating a wireless handheld device while driving—not an arrest or a reported reckless-driving criminal charge. Doherty pleaded not guilty in November 2024, and the final disposition was not established by the reliable public reporting used for this account. Kick initially banned him, but his profile was restored on January 9, 2025.

What happened in the Jack Doherty McLaren crash?

The crash happened on Saturday, October 5, 2024, as Doherty drove south on the Florida Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, with coverage placing the scene in or near Cutler Bay. Heavy rain had left the roadway wet. A passenger was filming Doherty for a live broadcast on Kick while Doherty drove the McLaren.

In the widely circulated footage, Doherty looks down toward a handheld phone shortly before the car begins to move across the roadway. The McLaren then appears to lose traction and strikes a guardrail or roadside barrier. The image briefly turns white or cuts out at impact. Doherty and his passenger have difficulty getting out of the damaged vehicle before people who stopped nearby help them exit. Miami New Times’ contemporaneous report provides the clearest account of the location, footage, aftermath and later citation.

No other vehicle appears to have been involved. After getting out, Doherty continued recording the scene and posted additional aftermath material, including footage from the hospital where Michael received stitches. His later YouTube video was titled “we almost died…”, according to Know Your Meme’s chronology of the incident. The original Kick stream was later removed or became unavailable, so reposted clips, Doherty’s own social posts and later edits should not be treated as identical source material.

What the video shows—and what it does not prove

The most defensible description is that the footage appears to show Doherty handling or looking at a handheld phone shortly before the crash. Some reports called this texting, while others said he was reading Kick chat. The publicly available footage does not establish exactly what was displayed on the screen or whether he was typing, scrolling, reading comments or doing something else at the precise instant of impact.

Doherty later disputed the interpretation. He reportedly said the clips had been edited and that he was not using the phone at the moment of the crash. That claim is part of the story, but it conflicts with the circulated footage’s apparent sequence and with the subsequent handheld-device citation. Dexerto reported his denial and the police action.

The car also appears to lose traction on the rain-slick road. “Hydroplaned” is a reasonable description of what viewers saw and is used in coverage, but the public material does not provide a complete accident reconstruction. Rain, phone distraction, speed, steering input, tire condition and road surface could all matter. It is therefore more accurate to say that the McLaren appeared to lose traction or hydroplane before hitting the barrier, rather than to identify hydroplaning as the sole proven cause. MotorTrend’s report discusses the crash footage and vehicle.

The exact speed is also unsettled. Road & Track reported that the speed was unclear. A later account said Doherty described the crash as occurring at about 42 mph in an aftermath video, but that was his own reported estimate, not an independently verified police measurement or reconstruction. ComingSoon attributed the 42-mph figure to Doherty.

Was anyone injured?

Doherty was apparently able to walk away and was not publicly reported to have suffered a serious injury. His passenger and cameraman, identified in later reporting as Michael David, was visibly bleeding from the face. He was later shown receiving stitches.

That is the limit of the reliable public account. The footage is alarming, but the available reporting does not establish a full medical diagnosis, a traumatic brain injury, permanent injury or a life-threatening condition. Online claims that Michael was “fighting for his life” go beyond the evidence.

Viewers also criticized Doherty’s behavior after the impact. The footage shows him repeatedly focusing on the damaged McLaren and asking Michael to continue filming while Michael’s face was visibly bleeding. That supports a description of what was recorded and why people reacted strongly; it does not, by itself, prove Doherty’s motives or mental state. Global News’ account describes the rescue and passenger injury, while Miami New Times covers the aftermath footage.

What McLaren did Jack Doherty crash?

The car was identified as a McLaren 570S, with crash-record coverage identifying it as a 2019 model. It had a light-blue, paint-splatter-style customization and reportedly included a custom exhaust and other modifications. The 570S is a rear-wheel-drive sports car powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 562 horsepower in U.S. specifications. Those specifications provide context for the car; they do not establish that a mechanical defect caused this crash. The Smoking Gun reported the model and crash-record details, and McLaren lists the model’s specifications on its manufacturer page.

The often-repeated “$200,000 McLaren” description comes primarily from Doherty’s reported purchase price. His 2023 purchase video documented a price of $202,850.10. That is not necessarily the car’s market value at the time of the crash, and it is not evidence of the eventual insurance loss. Doherty’s purchase video is the direct source for the purchase documentation.

The McLaren sustained severe visible front-end and body damage and was towed. Many outlets described it as totaled or destroyed, but “totaled” has not been established as a confirmed insurance outcome. The Smoking Gun, citing crash paperwork, reported that police listed vehicle damage at $10,000—an estimate that appears surprisingly low compared with the footage. No reliable public record used here establishes whether the insurer repaired the car, declared it a total loss, assigned salvage status or paid a claim.

How many people were watching?

Contemporaneous reports said roughly 185,000 people were watching the livestream. That figure should be treated as an attributed estimate rather than an audited Kick analytics number. A creator having millions of subscribers also does not mean millions watched a particular broadcast. Auto Bild reported the approximately 185,000-viewer figure.

Was Jack Doherty arrested or charged?

The reported legal sequence is narrower than many headlines suggest:

  1. Florida Highway Patrol reviewed the circulating footage.
  2. Investigators cited Doherty for using or operating a wireless handheld device while driving.
  3. Doherty pleaded not guilty to the traffic charge in November 2024.
  4. The reliable public sources used for this article do not establish the final disposition.

There is no reliable evidence in the supplied reporting that Doherty was arrested in connection with the crash, charged with reckless driving, or facing a jail sentence for it.

Florida’s wireless-communications law, Florida Statute §316.305, generally prohibits manually entering characters or reading data on a wireless device while driving for nonvoice interpersonal communication, such as texting, email or instant messaging. A first violation is a noncriminal traffic infraction treated under the statute as a nonmoving violation. The statute does not itself prove what Doherty did, and the article should not turn the legal language into a definitive finding that he was texting or reading livestream chat. The relevant procedural fact is the citation and his not-guilty plea.

What did Doherty say afterward?

Doherty described the crash as a “huge learning lesson” and said he was glad that he and Michael were okay. He also discussed the McLaren’s price and modifications and questioned whether insurance would cover the damage. His public account included the claim that the video clips had been edited and that he was not on his phone at the moment of impact.

His statements should be presented as his claims, separate from what can be independently seen or documented. For example, his reported 42-mph figure is not the same as a confirmed crash speed, and his editing allegation does not erase the visible sequence or the FHP citation. Doherty also posted that he was glad both men were okay on X and shared additional aftermath material, including hospital footage, in another post.

What happened to his Kick account?

Kick initially banned Doherty shortly after the crash. TMZ quoted Kick as saying the platform did not condone illegal activity and had taken action against the creator; later reporting described the ban as a response to endangering a life while driving on stream. TMZ reported the initial platform response.

The ban did not remain permanent. Viewers noticed that Doherty’s Kick profile was available again on January 9, 2025, about three months after the crash. Reporting did not establish why Kick reversed the decision. Dexerto reported the restoration.

What remains unknown?

  • The exact speed at the moment of the crash.
  • What was displayed on the phone and precisely what Doherty was doing with it.
  • Whether a full public accident reconstruction reached a definitive cause.
  • The final court disposition of the handheld-device citation.
  • Michael’s complete medical diagnosis and long-term recovery.
  • Whether the McLaren was repaired, salvaged or permanently written off by an insurer.
  • Whether insurance covered any part of the loss, and under what policy terms.

The strongest conclusion is also the simplest: the footage documents a serious wet-road crash during a livestream, with apparent handheld-phone use immediately beforehand and a passenger who suffered facial injuries. It does not prove every dramatic claim attached to the clip. The incident became a legal and platform-moderation story because a creator’s decision to produce content while driving created consequences beyond the damaged car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Jack Doherty arrested after the McLaren crash?

No. Reliable reporting identified a Florida Highway Patrol traffic citation for wireless-device use while driving, not an arrest or a reported reckless-driving criminal charge. Doherty pleaded not guilty in November 2024; the final disposition was not established in the available public reporting.

Was Jack Doherty’s McLaren officially totaled?

The car was widely described as totaled because of its severe visible damage, but no verified insurance determination was found. Crash paperwork cited by The Smoking Gun reportedly listed $10,000 in vehicle damage, which does not establish the final repair or insurance outcome.

What injuries did Jack Doherty’s passenger suffer?

The passenger and cameraman, identified in later reporting as Michael David, was visibly bleeding from the face and later received stitches. The available reporting does not establish a more detailed diagnosis or permanent injury.
