A camouflaged prototype reported as a possible next-generation Kia Sportage has renewed the question of whether the compact SUV is due for a replacement. But as of October 7, 2026, Kia has not confirmed a successor or announced when one will arrive. The current U.S. Sportage is on sale for 2027 after a substantial refresh for 2026, so the prototype report is a reason to watch—not proof that shoppers should wait.
Why a new Sportage is being discussed
In an October 5, 2026 report, Jalopnik’s Daniel Golson described spy photos of a camouflaged vehicle believed to be a prospective next-generation Sportage. The report notes that the current U.S. generation was revealed in 2021 and went on sale for the 2023 model year, then received a significant refresh for 2026.
That makes the timing plausible for a successor to be under development, but spy photography does not establish a production model, its specifications, or a launch date. Kia’s U.S. materials describe the refreshed 2026 Sportage and list a 2027 model; the official information reviewed does not announce a replacement.
What the prototype report predicts—and what remains unconfirmed
The camouflage limits what can be concluded from the photos. Golson’s report interprets visible exterior details and forecasts possible design and equipment changes, but those are the report’s assessments rather than Kia-confirmed features.

Possible design and equipment
The report speculates about revised lighting and a new cabin. Those details should be treated as possibilities, not a reliable preview of the final vehicle: camouflage can obscure bodywork, and a development prototype may not represent production equipment.
Possible platform and powertrains
The report suggests a relationship to the Hyundai Tucson and discusses a hybrid powertrain, with a range-extender configuration as another possibility. Kia has not confirmed the next Sportage’s platform or powertrain lineup. The current model’s published engine and hybrid figures cannot be carried forward as successor specifications.

Possible timing and off-road trim
The report floats a 2028 model-year possibility, a potential reveal window, U.S. sales timing, and an off-road-oriented trim. None is an announced Kia schedule or confirmed configuration. The available official U.S. information does not establish when a next-generation Sportage will be revealed or reach dealerships.
What Kia has confirmed about Sportage models on sale
Kia’s U.S. site lists the 2027 Sportage, including a starting MSRP of $28,990 for the displayed lineup. Kia says that figure excludes destination and handling, taxes, title, license, options, and dealer charges; actual dealer prices may vary. It is a live listed starting price, not a promise of a particular transaction price.

Refresh details for 2026
Kia’s June 2, 2026 press release describes the refreshed Sportage’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, an available 12.3-inch display, infotainment over-the-air updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on applicable trims. Kia Connect features include remote start, cabin preconditioning, lock-status checks, maintenance scheduling, and route planning. Availability depends on trim, so check the equipment for the specific vehicle.

Should you buy a Sportage now or wait?
