No general Japanese law sets an odometer reading at which a car engine must be replaced or the vehicle retired. Japan’s rules instead require vehicles to be maintained and inspected so they continue to meet safety standards. An individual vehicle may still need repairs or be unsafe to drive because of its actual condition.
What Japan’s vehicle rules say
Japan’s Road Transport Vehicle Act puts the duty on vehicle users to inspect and maintain vehicles as needed to keep them compliant with safety standards. Article 47 links routine inspection timing to mileage and operating conditions; it does not establish a maximum engine mileage. Article 58 requires covered vehicles to have an effective inspection certificate for road use, while Article 61 sets certificate validity by vehicle category. The cited e-Gov consolidation is dated April 1, 2022, so consult the current Act text for the exact wording in force.
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) organizes safety standards by vehicle and technical system, including engine and power-transmission requirements. Its index, current as of March 31, 2026, does not give an engine-life or odometer cutoff. See the MLIT safety-standards index.
Shaken is an inspection requirement, not an engine mileage limit
Shaken (車検) is the commonly used name for the vehicle inspection certificate system. Passing or being due for shaken is a matter of inspection and legal compliance—not a rule that an engine must be replaced at a particular odometer reading.

MLIT describes private passenger cars and light vehicles as having periodic inspections on two schedules:
| Inspection schedule | Items | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Annual | 29 | Periodic vehicle inspection; not an engine replacement threshold. |
| Every two years | 60, including the annual 29 items | Periodic vehicle inspection; not an engine replacement threshold. |
These schedules apply to the private-car and light-vehicle categories described by MLIT; other vehicle classes have different schedules. The ministry also says routine checks should be timed appropriately according to mileage and operating conditions. That is guidance about when to inspect, not a maximum mileage. Details are on MLIT’s inspection-types page.

What can trigger repairs or prevent road use
The relevant legal question is whether the vehicle meets safety standards, not whether its odometer has crossed a universal number. MLIT says an authority may order necessary repairs when a vehicle is noncompliant or may become noncompliant. Its guidance states that failing to follow such an order can lead to a vehicle-use suspension order or a fine of up to ¥500,000; that is an enforcement consequence, not a mileage rule or a repair-cost estimate. See MLIT’s maintenance-systems guidance.
A valid inspection certificate is not a guarantee of how long a particular engine will last. A vehicle’s actual condition and maintenance history matter, and an individual car may need repair or be unsuitable for use regardless of its mileage.

- PROFESSIONAL DIAGNOSTIC ACCURACY: Delivers reliable peak pressure readings to accurately assess engine health, identify worn piston rings, and detect valve issues
How to judge a specific high-mileage Japanese car
There is no general engine-life statistic established by the official sources cited here, so mileage alone cannot tell you how much life remains. For a purchase decision or an engine problem, assess the vehicle rather than applying a supposed legal cutoff:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Application: Suitable for testing various petrol engines, including motorcycles, automobiles, and most engine cylinder (excluding vehicles such as trucks, pickup trucks). However, due to its operating range of 0-300 PSI, it is not suitable for most diesel engines or engines with six or more cylinders engine, please confirm whether the engine has fewer than 6 cylinders. Note: Decrease the risk of petrol injection by releasing pressure before disconnecting
- Dual Color Scale Gauge: The engine compression tester kit equipped with a 3-inch dual scale gauge, this engine compression tester can read 0-300 psi and 0-20 Bar. the dual color scale makes pressure readings easy to identify and provides fast, accurate measurements for precise evaluations;please repeat the measurement at least twice to ensure data accuracy
- Reliable and Stable: Our compression tester is made of premium quality materials and specially treated to make sure longer service life and endurance, making it a reliable tool in your automotive toolbox
- Complete Set: The petrol pressure tester kit includes 1*double scale gauge, 2*rubber tapers (straight rubber taper end fittings and curved rubber taper end fittings) 4*brass fittings (M10, M12, M14, M18) and 14 inches long flexible extension hose to meet your practical needs
- Easy to Carry: This compression tester comes with a portable storage box to keep your compression test kit organized and unstuck. The hard-shell box ensures a secure storage and portability so you can stay on top of your compression testing needs
Rank #4
- Professional Tester Kit: Our engine cylinder compression tester kit helps you measure pressure on gasoline engine cylinder quickly and accurately. Made of choice materials and treated with rust prevention and corrosion prevention, sturty and time-proof
- Compression Gauge: Large acrylic dial and double-scale gauge for more accurate reading of data. Pressure range up to: 300 psi & 20 bar. One-click release pressure before disconnecting to reduces the risk of fuel injection. Comes with scratch resistant coating and rubber protective cover
- Universal Connection: Two universal rubber cone adapters provide quick and easy connections suitable for most spark plug depths, and an extended hose allows you to get into tight Spaces. Connect with the dial using a quick connection coupler, simple and fast
- Complete Accessories: The cylinder compression tester Kit includes: 1 x compression gauge, 2 x rubber cone ends, 4 x Metal adapter, 1 x 14" extension hose and 1 x manual. Four adapter sizes are widely available for most cars, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, snowmobiles, etc
- Note: Most diesel engines do not use engine pressure gauges due to the low pressure range. Please read the manual carefully before using the compression tester kit. We will provide satisfactory solutions for any issues with the product
- Review maintenance records. MLIT notes that records can help assess past maintenance and replacement timing for consumable parts.
- Check present condition. Have a qualified mechanic assess the engine and the rest of the vehicle; no single inspection or diagnostic tool is established here as a predictor of remaining engine life.
- Confirm inspection and compliance status. Treat a current certificate as evidence of inspection status, not a promise about future reliability.
- Compare the repair estimate with your needs. Consider the vehicle’s condition, intended use, and value when deciding whether a repair makes sense.
