1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNo Japanese car engine is proven “bulletproof,” and the available rankings do not measure engine failure by engine code. They do point to Toyota, Lexus and Honda as sensible brands to investigate, but a used car’s exact year and powertrain, maintenance history, recall status and present condition matter more than its badge. Treat reputation as a shortlist—not a guarantee.
What “bulletproof engine” means—and what the evidence can show
“Bulletproof” is an informal description, not a standardized reliability rating. The evidence available here compares reported problems across vehicles or estimates how often vehicles reach high mileage; it does not establish that a particular Japanese engine design is failure-proof.
Three recent studies offer useful but different perspectives. Consumer Reports predicts reliability from owner surveys; J.D. Power measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles; iSeeCars estimates the likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles from vehicle mileage data. Their results should not be blended into one ranking.
| Source and scope | Reported result | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Reports, 2026 predicted reliability; survey data from about 380,000 vehicles, reported in 2025 | Toyota 66; Subaru 63; Lexus 60; Honda 59 | Owner-reported problems across multiple trouble areas and models inform brand-level predictions. These are not engine-only scores. |
| J.D. Power, 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study; 34,175 original owners of 2022 vehicles, surveyed August–November 2024 after three years of ownership | Lexus 140 PP100 overall; Mazda 161 PP100 and Toyota 162 PP100 among the cited mass-market results | PP100 means reported problems per 100 vehicles; lower is better. This is whole-vehicle dependability for a defined U.S. cohort, not engine durability alone. |
| iSeeCars, 2026 longest-lasting brands study; more than 395 million vehicles analyzed | Estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles: Toyota 19.7%; Lexus 14.4%; Honda 13.3%; Acura 9.5%; overall average 5.4% | A modeled vehicle-mileage survival estimate, not a warranty or the probability that an engine alone will last that long. |
The studies differ in method, population and outcome. Consumer Reports’ brand-level prediction, J.D. Power’s three-year problem count and iSeeCars’ high-mileage estimate can each guide research, but none identifies a specific engine as indestructible.

Which Japanese makes are worth investigating?
Toyota and Lexus
Toyota and Lexus appear strongly in all three cited snapshots, though each source measures something different. That makes them reasonable places to begin a search for a durable used car—not proof that every model or powertrain is equally reliable.
Honda and Acura
Honda ranks among Consumer Reports’ top four brands and has a 13.3% modeled chance of reaching 250,000 miles in iSeeCars’ 2026 study; Acura’s corresponding estimate is 9.5%. Those brand-level figures are useful context, not a verdict on a particular Honda or Acura engine.

Subaru and Mazda
Subaru places second in Consumer Reports’ 2026 predicted-reliability brand results. Mazda is among the cited mass-market leaders in J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability study. Neither result can be directly compared with iSeeCars’ mileage estimates or interpreted as an engine-code ranking.
How to judge a specific used car
Use rankings to decide which vehicles to investigate, then assess the exact car. A strong reputation cannot establish how one vehicle was maintained, whether required repairs were completed or what condition its engine is in today.

- Identify the exact car and powertrain. Record the model year, model, engine or hybrid powertrain and, where available, the vehicle identification number. Brand-wide evidence does not settle the reliability of a specific year-and-engine combination.
- Review dated service records. Compare the records with the factory maintenance schedule for that vehicle. Toyota’s maintenance guidance specifically advises following the vehicle’s factory-recommended schedule; schedules and required work are model-specific. A maintenance log can organize dates and mileage, but it does not independently verify that service was performed.
- Check recall status and completion. Look up notices for the exact vehicle and confirm whether applicable work was completed. Honda’s four-wheel vehicle recall and improvement-measure listing illustrates why checking the individual vehicle matters. Use the relevant automaker’s or authority’s lookup for the car’s market.
- Arrange an independent mechanical inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the vehicle’s present condition and identify concerns before purchase. A brand ranking or clean-looking service record is not a substitute for examining the actual car.
- Use diagnostic scans as one input, not a health certificate. Toyota’s 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid owner’s manual explains that OBD checks emissions-control operation; it also notes that readiness codes may be erased if the 12-volt battery is disconnected or discharged. A scan alone therefore does not establish overall engine condition.
Why no single mileage figure proves an engine is bulletproof
iSeeCars estimates that 19.7% of Toyota vehicles in its analyzed data reach 250,000 miles, compared with 5.4% overall. That is a modeled brand-level estimate from a large vehicle dataset, not a promise for any Toyota, and it does not isolate engine failure. Usage and vehicle exposure affect whether a car accumulates high mileage.
Likewise, a low PP100 result describes reported problems across a vehicle after a specified ownership period; it is not a direct measurement of how long an engine lasts. A car can have a durable engine and still require costly repairs elsewhere, while an otherwise promising model can be a poor purchase if its history or current condition is poor.

Bottom line for buyers
Toyota, Lexus and Honda are supported by multiple brand-level signals, while Subaru and Mazda also stand out in specific studies. None of these sources establishes an engine-by-engine “bulletproof” list. Choose by exact model year and powertrain, then verify maintenance, recalls and condition before buying.
