Yes—provided the price, charging setup and vehicle fit are right. Falling electric-vehicle sales do not automatically make a Volkswagen ID.4 a bad car or a bad purchase. They do increase the importance of negotiating the transaction price, checking local inventory and accepting that resale values may be less predictable.
The latest U.S. data show a market adjusting after an unusually strong 2025 quarter, not a simple collapse in demand. The ID.4 itself has a mixed sales record, so a buyer should treat it as a value-and-usage decision rather than a bet on the overall EV market.

What falling EV sales actually mean for an ID.4 buyer
Cox Automotive’s October 12, 2026 commentary, using Kelley Blue Book estimates, counted 266,630 U.S. EV sales in the third quarter of 2026. That was 7.7% higher than the second quarter but 38.6% lower than the third quarter of 2025. EVs represented about 6.5% of new-vehicle sales in Q3 2026, compared with 5.8% in Q2.
The year-over-year decline needs context. Q3 2025 was an exceptional quarter because many shoppers moved purchases forward before federal incentives expired. Comparing a normalizing quarter with that unusually high baseline makes the drop look more dramatic than the sequential trend. Cox quoted Stephanie Valdez Streaty, its director of Industry Insights, saying, “What we’re seeing now is a market finding its footing again.” That is an interpretation of the market, not a guarantee that sales will rebound.

For an ID.4 shopper, the practical effects are more specific:
- Dealers may have more reason to discount aging inventory, but the discount varies by store, trim, financing and region.
- A weaker market can make future resale values harder to predict.
- Lower demand does not change the car’s range, cabin space or charging requirements.
- You should compare a written out-the-door offer with competing vehicles rather than use national sales volume as a quality score.
There is no evidence in the cited market reports that proves the ID.4 sales decline was caused by reliability, product quality, factory decisions or consumer rejection. Those reports also do not provide a Q3 2026 ID.4 sales figure, so the dramatic Q1 pattern should not be projected unchanged through the entire year.
What the ID.4 sales numbers show—and what they do not
| Period | U.S. ID.4 sales | Comparison | Source context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 full year | 17,021 | Baseline | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive annual report |
| 2025 full year | 22,373 | 31.4% higher than 2024 | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive annual report |
| Q4 2025 | 248 | 61.6% lower than Q4 2024’s 646 | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive annual report |
| Q1 2026 | 338 | 95.6% lower than Q1 2025’s 7,663 | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive Q1 report |
The full-year increase in 2025 and the sharp quarterly declines do not tell one consistent story. They do show that model demand has been volatile. The Q1 2026 report also put Volkswagen-brand EV sales at 1,177, versus 9,564 in Q1 2025. Because the available reports do not explain the cause, use the figures to assess negotiating leverage and resale risk—not to diagnose the vehicle.

What you get in a 2026 ID.4
Volkswagen’s U.S. model information lists a $45,095 starting MSRP for the 2026 ID.4. That is a manufacturer’s suggested price, not a guaranteed transaction price. Dealer fees, installed options, financing, trade-in terms, taxes, registration and local incentives can materially change the amount you pay.
| 2026 trim or layout | EPA-estimated range | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Pro, rear-wheel drive | Up to 291 miles | EPA estimate listed by Volkswagen |
| Pro S, rear-wheel drive | Up to 291 miles | EPA estimate listed by Volkswagen |
| AWD Pro | 263 miles | EPA estimate listed by Volkswagen |
| AWD Pro S | 263 miles | EPA estimate listed by Volkswagen |
| AWD Pro S Plus | 263 miles | EPA estimate listed by Volkswagen |
Volkswagen lists a standard 12.9-inch touchscreen and standard IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance technology. A new, unused 2026 vehicle bought from an authorized U.S. Volkswagen dealer includes a two-year Electrify America Pass+ membership with Plug&Charge and two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, subject to the program’s conditions. The charging membership is non-transferable, so confirm eligibility if you are considering a vehicle that has already been titled.
Charging determines whether the ID.4 fits your life
Home charging
Daily charging is easiest when you can charge where the car normally sits. Volkswagen describes home charging at up to 11 kW with an available wall charger as taking up to eight hours from completely empty to full. That is a manufacturer estimate under stated conditions, not a promise for every installation or temperature.

Volkswagen specifies an optional wall charger rather than including one as standard equipment. Before buying, obtain an electrician’s assessment of the panel, circuit, wiring route, outlet or hardwire requirements and installation cost. Apartment residents and renters should confirm that the property allows dedicated charging and who pays for electrical work.
Public DC fast charging
Volkswagen says optimal DC fast charging can take the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes. Actual time depends on battery temperature, charger output, the car’s state of charge, station sharing and other conditions. A road-trip plan should be based on compatible stations along your normal routes, not the headline time alone.
NACS fast-charging access
The 2026 ID.4 can use compatible Tesla Superchargers with a Volkswagen-approved NACS DC adapter sold separately. The adapter is for designated compatible DC fast chargers; it is not an adapter for AC home or destination charging. Check the Tesla app for current location availability and terms, and verify that the specific station is listed as compatible before relying on it.

Everyday strengths and compromises
Reasons to consider it
- Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 review highlights a quiet, smooth ride that suits commuting and family use.
- The cabin is roomy, and the cargo area is useful for a compact electric SUV.
- The rear-wheel-drive versions offer the highest listed range, up to 291 EPA-estimated miles.
- Standard driver-assistance equipment and the large touchscreen reduce the need to add basic technology packages.
Reasons to hesitate
- Kelley Blue Book says the ID.4’s range trails several rivals and that some competitors charge faster.
- The review criticizes the touch-sensitive climate and volume controls as fussy. Operate them during a test drive rather than assuming you will adapt.
- Kelley Blue Book reports that the 2025 ID.4’s resale value trails competitors. That makes purchase price especially important if you may sell in a few years.
- The review observations apply to the 2025 model and should not be treated as an independent road test of the 2026 car.
New versus used: which ID.4 is the better value?
A new 2026 ID.4
A new car makes the strongest case when you want the current trim, the listed 2026 charging and maintenance benefits, and a known in-service date. Ask at least two local dealers for itemized written offers showing selling price, dealer fees, finance rate, accessories, taxes and registration. Compare the total amount financed, not just the advertised monthly payment.
Because $45,095 is only the starting MSRP, do not use it as your final budget. A lower negotiated price can offset depreciation risk; a near-MSRP deal may be less attractive if a similarly equipped rival has a stronger resale outlook or faster charging for your routes.
A used ID.4
A used example can be compelling when its price reflects the depreciation reported by Kelley Blue Book. The exact vehicle matters more than the model name. Check the VIN, in-service date, mileage, title history, accident repairs, maintenance records, open recalls, software updates and charging equipment.

Kelley Blue Book lists the 2025 new-vehicle warranty as four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, with battery coverage of eight years or 100,000 miles. Treat those figures as a 2025 reference and verify the remaining coverage for the particular car, including whether its warranty clock started when it was delivered or previously placed in service. Ask for documentation of any battery-related inspection or repair rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge the deal instead of the headline price
- Get the complete written offer. Include vehicle price, destination charge, dealer documentation fees, accessories, taxes, registration, trade-in allowance and financing terms.
- Separate purchase price from incentives. Confirm whether a discount is conditional on financing, a trade-in, a particular credit profile or a program with an expiration date.
- Price your charging setup. Add the wall charger, electrical work and any ongoing public-charging cost you realistically expect.
- Value the included benefits correctly. Confirm that the two-year Pass+ membership and scheduled maintenance apply to a new, unused 2026 vehicle purchased through an authorized U.S. Volkswagen dealer.
- Estimate your ownership horizon. If you expect to sell soon, demand a larger price advantage to compensate for uncertain resale. If you plan to keep the car for many years, focus more on charging convenience, warranty coverage and condition.
How the ID.4 compares with alternatives
Kelley Blue Book identifies the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya, Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra as competitors. No single rival is automatically superior on every measure. Compare the same equipment level and use the axes below:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer locally |
|---|---|
| Out-the-door cost | Which vehicle has the lower written total after fees, financing and incentives? |
| Range | What is the EPA estimate for the exact trim and drive layout? |
| Charging | How long will your normal stops take, and are compatible stations available on your routes? |
| Space and comfort | Do the rear seat, cargo area and seating position fit your household? |
| Warranty and condition | What coverage remains, and what does the inspection or service history show? |
| Resale | Does the purchase discount compensate for the expected depreciation risk? |
Inspection checklist before signing
For a new vehicle
- Confirm the exact trim, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive layout and advertised range.
- Match the vehicle identification number on the contract, window sticker and car.
- Verify that promised charging membership and maintenance benefits are written into the deal and that eligibility conditions are met.
- Test the touchscreen, climate controls, driver-assistance settings, cameras, charging port and all key fobs.
- Request the final out-the-door amount before discussing monthly payments.
For a used vehicle
- Check the title, accident history, odometer, recall status and service records.
- Verify the original in-service date and remaining basic and battery warranty.
- Inspect the charge port and cables, and perform an AC and DC charging test when possible.
- Confirm that the included equipment matches the listing and that any NACS adapter is Volkswagen-approved and compatible with the model year.
- Have an independent technician inspect suspension, tires, brakes, body repairs and underbody damage.
Who should buy an ID.4 now?
The 2026 ID.4 is most defensible for a buyer who can charge reliably at home or has dependable public access, wants a quiet and roomy compact electric SUV, accepts the listed range and charging trade-offs, and secures a competitive written deal. A used ID.4 can make sense when its depreciation is reflected in the price and its warranty, battery coverage, condition and charging compatibility are documented.
It is a weaker choice if you cannot establish convenient charging, dislike the touch controls after a test drive, need the fastest possible road-trip charging, or are being asked to pay close to MSRP without a clear reason. In those cases, compare the alternatives on actual out-the-door cost and your driving pattern rather than assuming the ID.4’s low sales volume is either a bargain signal or a warning by itself.
