In U.S. sales, the RAV4 now outsells the Camry—but it is not literally the Camry’s replacement. The RAV4 is Toyota’s high-volume SUV, while the Camry remains a successful passenger car. Calling the RAV4 “the new Camry” works as shorthand for its mainstream popularity, not as a formal ranking or proof that Camry buyers have switched.
What “the new Camry” means—and what it doesn’t
The comparison is about the role each model plays in Toyota’s lineup: a familiar, high-volume choice that appeals to a broad market. It is not a claim that the vehicles belong to the same category. In Toyota’s 2024 U.S. sales release, the Camry was described as the country’s No. 1 passenger car for the 23rd consecutive year, while the RAV4 was the No. 1 SUV for the eighth consecutive year. Those category-specific distinctions can both be true. Toyota Motor North America’s 2024 U.S. sales report does not say the RAV4 replaced the Camry.
How 2025 U.S. sales compare
Toyota reported 479,288 RAV4 sales and 316,185 Camry sales in the United States in 2025. That put the RAV4 ahead by 163,103 vehicles in reported model volume. Toyota called 2025 a best-ever year for the RAV4 and also reported a best-ever year for the Camry Hybrid. The figures show that both nameplates remained strong; they do not show that RAV4 buyers were former Camry shoppers. Toyota’s 2025 U.S. sales report is the source for these company-reported totals.

The table compares different kinds of measures: 2025 model totals, 2024 year-over-year changes, and category rankings reported for 2024. A ranking within a vehicle category is not the same as being the highest-volume model across all categories.

Why the SUV comparison needs a caveat
The RAV4’s larger 2025 total establishes that Toyota sold more RAV4s than Camrys in the United States that year. It does not establish why: the sales releases do not measure whether buyers switched from sedans to SUVs, whether shoppers see the two models as substitutes, or whether the RAV4 has inherited the Camry’s cultural status.
In 2024, RAV4 Hybrid sales increased 29.3% and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid sales increased 19.3%, according to Toyota. Those increases add powertrain context to the RAV4’s performance, but they do not by themselves explain demand or establish that hybridization caused the sales result.

Hybridization is part of the Camry’s story, too
Toyota described the 2025 Camry as exclusively hybrid in its June 2024 announcement about the model and its campaign. That makes hybrid power central to the current Camry’s positioning, rather than a niche version of the sedan. In its January 2026 sales release, Toyota also said the Camry Hybrid had its best-ever year in 2025. The RAV4 and Camry therefore both have hybrid context, but Toyota’s reported figures do not isolate powertrain as the reason either model sold well.
What Toyota says about its buyers
In Toyota’s January 5, 2026 sales release, Andrew Gilleland, senior vice president of Toyota Motor North America’s Automotive Operations Group, said: “The success of iconic top-sellers like the Camry and Corolla, alongside a broad lineup of vehicles starting under $30,000, shows that customers value having accessible options.” That is the company’s interpretation of its results, not an independent study of why people chose a Camry or RAV4.

So, is the RAV4 the new Camry?
As a metaphor for a broadly popular, high-volume Toyota, the comparison makes sense: the RAV4 outsold the Camry in U.S. sales in 2025. As a literal replacement, category ranking, or claim about buyers moving from one model to the other, it goes further than the available figures support. The more precise takeaway is that Toyota had a leading SUV and a successful passenger car at the same time.
