You can often narrow down a car problem with a few low-risk checks, but symptoms are clues—not a diagnosis. Start by noticing warning lights, sounds, smells, and visible changes. Stop driving and seek help for overheating, brake problems, smoke, or a flashing check-engine light accompanied by abnormal engine behavior. Your owner’s manual takes precedence because warning meanings and safe procedures vary by vehicle.

Start with safety, not parts replacement

Before troubleshooting, note what the car is doing and whether the problem is getting worse. A warning light, sound, or smell can point toward a system without identifying the failed component.

  • Pull over safely and stop the engine if you see smoke, the temperature gauge reaches the red, steam appears, or the engine shakes or loses power.
  • Do not keep driving with abnormal braking. A soft pedal, reduced stopping ability, pulling, or a burning odor needs prompt professional attention.
  • Do not open a hot cooling system. Pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Use the vehicle’s manual for model-specific checks, especially for jump-starting and warning-light instructions.

What does the check-engine light mean?

A check-engine light can relate to engine or emissions systems. Causes range from a loose or faulty fuel cap to more complex faults, so the light alone does not identify a repair.

If the light is steady

Check that the fuel cap is properly fitted and tightened, then note whether the car is running normally. Arrange prompt diagnosis if the light stays on. An OBD2 scanner can retrieve diagnostic information; AAA says these scanners work on most vehicles made after 1996. A code is a lead for diagnosis, not proof that the named part needs replacement. See AAA’s check-engine-light guidance.

If the light is flashing

A flashing light may indicate a serious ignition problem, such as an engine misfire. If the car also shakes, loses power, emits smoke, smells unusual, or otherwise behaves abnormally, pull over when safe and shut off the engine. Do not continue driving to see whether it clears.

Why won’t my car start?

Listen to what happens when you try to start the car, but treat the sound as a clue rather than a diagnosis. Battery, starter, charging, ignition, wiring, and fuel problems can produce overlapping symptoms.

What you notice Possible direction What to do
Rapid clicking A weak battery is one possibility. Consider roadside assistance or a mechanic if the car does not start after safe basic checks.
A single click or silence The starter may be involved, even if the battery is charged. Have the starting system assessed rather than replacing parts based on the sound alone.
Slow cranking Battery or starting-system trouble is possible. Seek diagnosis if the issue persists.
Starts after a jump, then soon dies Charging-system trouble is one possibility. Arrange professional diagnosis.

For a jump-start, follow the vehicle manual and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. The correct method varies, particularly for hybrids and electric vehicles; do not assume a procedure intended for another car applies to yours. AAA describes common no-start clues in its overview of common car problems.

How should I check low tire pressure or uneven wear?

Use a tire-pressure gauge when the tires are cold. NHTSA defines cold as having not driven for at least three hours. Inflate to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation on the driver-side placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. NHTSA states: “The vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire inflation pressure is the proper psi (pounds per square inch) or kPa (kilopascals—the metric measure used internationally) when a tire is cold, meaning it has not been driven on for at least three hours.” See NHTSA’s TireWise guidance.

If the tire-pressure warning is on

Check all tires with a gauge. A TPMS warning means one or more tires may be significantly underinflated; if the light flashes and then stays on, the system itself may have a malfunction. TPMS does not replace regular gauge checks—NHTSA advises checking pressure monthly.

If you see damage or irregular wear

Look over the tread and sidewalls for cuts, bulges, cracks, punctures, or uneven wear. Have a tire professional assess visible damage or a change in handling. NHTSA says tires worn to 2/32 inch should be replaced. In its published estimates, proper inflation can save as much as 11 cents per gallon and extend average tire life by 4,700 miles; these are not guaranteed results for an individual driver. NHTSA reported 511 road deaths in tire-related crashes in 2024. See its tire safety information.

What do brake symptoms mean?

Squealing can be associated with worn pads; vibration during braking can point to rotor trouble. A soft or spongy pedal can indicate air or a hydraulic leak, while pulling to one side or a burning smell can signal a brake-system issue. None of these observations pinpoints the failed component.

Braking is safety-critical. If the pedal feels soft, stopping ability is reduced, the car pulls while braking, a brake warning light appears, or you smell burning, stop driving when safe and arrange prompt professional inspection. Do not use this article to decide which brake part to replace.

What should I do if the car is overheating?

A gauge in the red, steam, a burning smell, loss of engine power, or coolant on the ground can indicate overheating. Stop somewhere safe and turn off the engine. Let it cool and follow the owner’s manual; never open a hot, pressurized cooling system.

Possible causes include low coolant or a leak, a thermostat or water-pump fault, or a radiator problem. Symptoms alone cannot distinguish them. NHTSA’s summer-driving guidance includes vehicle and cooling-system precautions; get professional help if the car has overheated or you see a leak.

Which checks are reasonable to do yourself?

Keep DIY troubleshooting to observation and straightforward checks that the manual supports. Measuring cold tire pressure, looking for visible tire damage, noting how the starter sounds, and checking a properly fitted fuel cap can help you describe the problem. A scanner or pressure gauge provides information, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Brake, cooling-system, and electrical repairs require more than symptom matching. If you are unsure whether a check is safe for your vehicle, or the problem involves a safety-critical system, stop and contact a qualified repair professional or roadside assistance.
