Yes, but only conditionally. The Suzuki V-Strom SX gives a passenger useful space, a grab-bar-capable rear carrier and adjustable rear preload. Its rider ergonomics are touring-friendly. However, Autocar India’s road test found that jolts came through noticeably to the pillion and described the ride as harsh on rough surfaces. Treat the SX as a two-up touring candidate, not as a guaranteed comfortable passenger bike. The deciding test is a ride with your actual passenger, luggage and representative roads.
What the independent road test found
Autocar India’s 16 July 2022 road test is the clearest direct assessment of passenger comfort. The testers described the seat as spacious and well padded, and the overall riding position as suitable for touring. Those are positive signs for a long day, particularly for the rider. The same test reported that the pillion ride felt a bit harsh because most jolts filtered through.

These observations are not contradictory. A seat can have adequate width and padding while the suspension still transmits sharp impacts to the passenger. Passenger comfort depends on the seat, suspension movement, road surface, speed, passenger posture and the combined load. Therefore, a comfortable rider position should not be used as proof that the pillion will be comfortable.
Autocar’s earlier initial review also stated that loaded performance with a pillion and panniers or a top box had not yet been assessed. That means there is no strong independent basis for promising comfortable acceleration, braking, handling or endurance at a fully loaded touring weight. The 2022 test is useful direct evidence, but it may describe an earlier model-year version than the motorcycle sold in your market.

How the suspension affects a passenger
Seven-step rear preload adjustment
Suzuki’s current specification information lists seven rear-preload settings and says the adjustment can be set for solo riding, a passenger or heavy luggage. Preload changes the suspension’s starting position so the rear of the motorcycle is better matched to the load. It is an important setup feature for two-up travel.
Adjustment is not the same as extra softness. Suzuki describes the feature as helping deliver a stable, comfortable ride, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than independent proof that the pillion harshness reported by Autocar disappears. Use the setting recommended in the owner’s manual or by an authorized dealer, then evaluate the result with the passenger on the roads you actually use.
Firmness and road speed
Autocar characterized the suspension as firm rather than plush and observed that ride quality improved as speed increased over bumps. That does not mean riding faster is a solution for passenger discomfort. On broken urban streets, expansion joints, potholes or rough mountain sections, the passenger may still feel sharp vertical impacts. A smoother highway can make the same motorcycle feel substantially better, while a poorly surfaced route can expose its limitation.

For two-up touring, the practical question is not whether the SX is universally soft. It is whether its firm response is acceptable to your passenger after an hour or more, with the suspension adjusted for the combined load. A short solo ride cannot answer that.
Passenger space, foot position and grab support
The road test’s description of a spacious, well-padded seat is encouraging for basic room. Before buying, have the intended passenger sit on the motorcycle wearing the clothing and footwear used on trips. Check whether the passenger can change position, keep both feet securely on the pegs and reach the grab support without leaning awkwardly.
Suzuki describes the aluminum rear carrier as also functioning as a passenger grab bar. That gives the passenger a defined handhold rather than requiring a grip on the rider. The carrier is listed with a 6 kg carrying capacity and four luggage hooks. The 6 kg figure applies to the carrier; it is not the motorcycle’s total permissible payload. It cannot be used to calculate how much the rider, passenger and all luggage may weigh together.

Seat height and the low-seat option
Suzuki’s current specification page lists an 835 mm seat height. That measurement matters primarily to the rider’s ability to reach the ground when stopping, mounting or maneuvering a loaded motorcycle. A confident rider can make two-up starts and low-speed turns less stressful for the passenger.

Its stated purpose is to make it easier for the rider to reach the ground. It is not described as a wider, softer or passenger-specific comfort seat, so do not buy it expecting a pillion-cushion upgrade. Accessory availability can change; confirm the correct part and fitment with an authorized Suzuki dealer in your market.
Can it carry a passenger and luggage?
The SX has practical provisions for carrying both. The rear carrier, grab-bar function and luggage hooks make it possible to organize a two-up setup, and the seven-position preload adjuster gives you a way to account for the extra load. Those provisions answer the mechanical setup question, but they do not establish the maximum combined weight or loaded touring behavior.

Before a long trip, consult the owner’s manual or Suzuki dealer for the motorcycle’s total permissible load, axle limits and any restrictions for a top box, panniers or soft bags. Keep rack-mounted luggage within the carrier’s stated 6 kg capacity. Do not add the passenger’s weight, the rider’s weight and the rack figure and assume the result is an approved payload; the carrier limit and the vehicle payload limit are different specifications.
Pack heavy items low and close to the motorcycle’s centerline, secure every bag to appropriate mounting points and check that nothing can touch the wheel, chain, exhaust or suspension. Recheck straps after the first few miles. A loaded passenger should be told how to mount, dismount and remain still during slow turns so the rider is not surprised by a shift in balance.

- Use the intended passenger. Passenger height, weight, mobility and tolerance for firm impacts all affect the result. A different passenger can reach a different conclusion.
- Set the motorcycle for two. Adjust rear preload according to the owner’s manual or dealer guidance before riding. Record the setting so you can return to it after solo use.
- Check static fit. Confirm seat room, knee bend at the passenger pegs, grab-bar reach and whether the passenger can keep a relaxed posture without bracing against the rider.
- Ride smooth pavement first. Listen for movement, evaluate wind exposure and check whether the passenger can sit naturally without sliding into the rider.
- Include representative rough roads. Use the patched streets, joints, broken edges or gravel sections that resemble your planned route. This is where Autocar’s pillion-harshness observation is most relevant.
- Ride long enough to reveal fatigue. A five-minute impression can miss pressure points and cumulative jolts. Stop safely and ask the passenger what felt uncomfortable, rather than relying only on rider feedback.
- Add realistic luggage. Use the bags and approximate contents you will carry, while staying within the applicable limits. Luggage changes suspension loading and the passenger’s available space.
- Repeat after adjustment. If the rear feels too low, unsettled or harsh, make only the adjustment permitted by the manual and test again. Do not treat preload changes as a guarantee of a plush ride.
How to prepare the SX for a touring day
- Verify the total permissible vehicle load in the owner’s manual or with Suzuki; the 6 kg carrier rating is only one limit.
- Set rear preload for the two-up load and note the setting for future trips.
- Keep carrier luggage at or below the stated 6 kg capacity and secure it with suitable hooks or approved mounts.
- Ask the passenger to use the grab bar, keep feet on the pegs and avoid sudden movements during starts, stops and low-speed turns.
- Inspect straps, carrier fasteners, luggage clearance and tire condition before departure.
- Plan breaks on rough routes. Frequent stops allow the passenger to change position and identify discomfort before it becomes a problem.
- Consider a properly fitted aftermarket pillion cushion only if needed. Verify that it cannot slide, interfere with the grab bar or alter the passenger’s secure seating position; no particular cushion has been tested here.
What to compare with other two-up motorcycles
If you are choosing among touring-oriented motorcycles, compare passenger-specific factors rather than relying on engine size or the rider’s brochure description. Use the same passenger and the same test route whenever possible.

Who is likely to be satisfied?
The SX is a sensible candidate for a rider-passenger pair who value a roomy seat, upright touring ergonomics, a defined grab bar and the ability to adjust rear preload. It is more persuasive for routes that are mostly smooth or moderately surfaced and for passengers who accept a firm, controlled ride.

It is a weaker choice for a passenger who expects luxury-car softness, is highly sensitive to sharp impacts, or will spend most of the trip on severely broken roads. It is also a poor basis for a purchase if the plan depends on carrying an unspecified amount of luggage, because the carrier rating cannot stand in for a total payload figure.

The Suzuki V-Strom SX can work for two-up touring, but “comfortable” depends heavily on the passenger and route. Its passenger provisions are useful, its seat is described as spacious and well padded, and its seven-step preload adjustment helps accommodate a two-up load.
