Subaru lists 43.1 inches of front legroom and 39.8 inches of front headroom in the 2025 WRX. A moonroof lowers stated front headroom to 38.8 inches. Rear space is notably tighter at 36.5 inches of legroom and 36.7 inches of headroom. Seat-adjustment differences, body proportions, and the exact roof and trim configuration matter enough that a test sit—and, for long trips, a realistic drive—should decide the purchase.
What the WRX dimensions say about tall occupants
Subaru of America’s 2025 specifications provide a useful starting point, but they are measurements of the cabin rather than a promise that every six-footer or taller driver will be comfortable. The published figures are:

These are Subaru’s listed dimensions for the 2025 model year. They should be treated as comparable specifications, not as a validated height limit. Two people of the same height can need very different seat positions because one has a longer torso, another has longer legs, and each may prefer a different backrest angle or steering-wheel distance.

Front legroom is the WRX’s best case for tall drivers
At 43.1 inches, front legroom gives the WRX a plausible fit for many tall drivers. The number matters most when you set the seat far enough rearward to keep your knees relaxed while still reaching the pedals without pointing your toes. Check the relationship among the seat cushion, pedals, steering wheel, and your hips rather than judging legroom by sliding the seat all the way back and calling the test complete.

A long-legged driver may have enough knee clearance but still feel cramped if the steering wheel does not extend far enough toward the driver. Conversely, moving the wheel closer can force a more upright posture. The only reliable answer is whether you can establish your normal driving position while keeping a slight bend in your elbows and comfortable pedal contact.
Headroom changes with the roof
The moonroof-equipped WRX has a stated 38.8 inches of front headroom, compared with 39.8 inches without the moonroof. That one-inch difference can decide whether a tall driver has visible clearance above the hair, can sit upright without touching the liner, and can wear a cap or helmet comfortably. Sit in the exact roof configuration you would buy; do not assume a non-moonroof showroom car represents the moonroof version.
Rear passengers face a different comfort question
Rear headroom is 36.7 inches and rear legroom is 36.5 inches according to Subaru’s 2025 brochure. Those figures can work for average-size adults, but a tall rear passenger is not simply getting the same front-seat experience one row back. The driver’s seat position consumes the available knee space, and the roofline and cushion height determine whether the passenger’s head clears the liner.
Test the seat behind the driver
If a tall passenger will regularly ride behind a tall driver, set the driver’s seat first. Put the driver in the position used on a normal trip, including the preferred steering-wheel reach and backrest angle. Then have the passenger sit directly behind that seat. Check whether the passenger’s knees touch the seatback, whether feet can sit naturally under the front seat, and whether the passenger can keep the head centered without leaning.
Do the same test behind the front passenger seat if that position is used more often. A rear-seat check performed with the front seats pushed forward creates a misleading impression of available space.

Width and posture matter in back
Rear shoulder room is listed at 55.6 inches and rear hip room at 49.3 inches. Those values describe the cabin’s width, not the number of adults who will be comfortable shoulder-to-shoulder. A tall passenger should also check the outboard seat’s cushion length, the angle of the backrest, and the location of the feet. A passenger who has adequate knee clearance but cannot support the thighs may become uncomfortable on a long trip.
Seat equipment varies by WRX trim
Subaru lists a six-way manual driver’s seat on the base trim, power-adjustable driver-seat configurations on higher trims, and Recaro performance-design front seats on selected GT and tS versions. The equipment list tells you what adjustment mechanisms and seat shapes to test; it does not identify one universally best seat for tall people.

More adjustment does not automatically mean more comfort. A power seat can make small changes easier, while a heavily bolstered performance seat can hold you securely but press against a broad torso or thighs. Compare the exact trim, not a different WRX whose controls or cushions look similar.
What road-test reporting adds
Consumer Reports’ 2025 road-test summary describes the WRX’s driving position as fairly upright and says the tall roof and large windshield provide plenty of headroom. Those observations support the favorable front-headroom figures, particularly for drivers who prefer an upright posture and clear forward sight lines.
The same summary criticizes the front seats for limited adjustment and says they are not especially suited to long-haul comfort. That is an important qualification for a tall driver: a cabin can have enough measured space while the seat cushion, backrest, or adjustment range still leaves you sore after hours behind the wheel. Consumer Reports also flags a stiff ride, which can add to fatigue on rough pavement.

Its assessment of the rear seat is more positive in general terms, citing useful leg support, foot space beneath the front seats, and a backrest that is not overly upright. This is a broad road-test impression rather than a tall-person fit study, so a tall rear passenger should still perform the behind-the-driver test.

There is no established WRX rule such as “comfortable up to six feet four inches.” The available evidence consists of Subaru’s cabin measurements, a professional road-test summary, and self-selected owner discussions. Forum posts include drivers describing ample front room, concerns about rear headroom, and differing experiences from people around 6 feet 4 inches. Those comments explain why people ask whether tall drivers have “issues with space or feeling cramped,” but they cannot establish a typical result or a safe maximum height.
Height is only one variable. Compare these factors during your own fit check:
- Torso length: A long torso makes roof clearance more critical even when legroom is generous.
- Leg length: Long legs may require the seat far back, reducing rear-passenger knee room.
- Preferred posture: An upright backrest and high seat position use headroom differently from a reclined posture.
- Shoulder and hip width: Bolsters and cushion shape can matter more than the headline dimensions.
- Footwear and driving habits: Work boots, a thick sole, or a preference for stretched-out legs can change pedal reach.
A practical WRX fit test for tall drivers
Use this sequence at a dealer or during an extended test drive. Bring the people who will actually occupy the car; a salesperson’s demonstration position is not a substitute for yours.
- Confirm the specification. Record the model year, trim, seat type, and whether the car has a moonroof. The front-headroom figure changes with the roof.
- Set the seat to your normal height. Do not lower it merely to create extra headroom if you would not drive that way. Keep enough thigh support to avoid pressure behind the knees.
- Set fore-aft distance. Press each pedal through its full travel. Your knee should remain slightly bent rather than locked, and your heel should stay stable while moving between pedals.
- Position the backrest. Use the angle you would choose for commuting or highway driving. Check that your shoulders remain supported without forcing your head forward.
- Adjust the steering wheel. Bring it close enough for relaxed elbows while preserving a clear view of the instruments. Make sure the wheel does not force your knees outward or interfere with entry.
- Check head clearance. Sit upright, look ahead, and move your head slightly side to side. Test the actual roof lining above you, especially in a moonroof car.
- Evaluate sight lines and contact points. Confirm that the mirror, windshield header, door armrest, center console, and seat bolsters do not require you to twist or hunch.
- Drive long enough to expose pressure points. A short loop can reveal pedal and visibility problems; a longer drive is more useful for cushion pressure, lower-back support, and ride harshness.
How to evaluate passenger comfort
For a tall front passenger, repeat the same seat and headroom checks with the passenger seat in its normal position. Then test entry and exit: a seat that is comfortable once seated may still require an awkward bend at the roof or door opening.

For rear passengers, use a three-stage check:
- Place the driver in the real driving position.
- Seat the passenger behind the driver and check head, knee, shin, and foot clearance simultaneously.
- Have the passenger sit for at least several minutes, changing posture naturally rather than holding a showroom pose.
Ask whether the passenger can keep both feet supported, avoid contact with the front seatback, and look out without leaning. If two tall adults will occupy both front seats, repeat the test with both seats set correctly; one person’s comfortable position can reduce the other’s available space.

A tall driver can fit dimensionally and still dislike the WRX on a long journey. Consumer Reports’ summary specifically points to limited front-seat adjustment and weak long-haul comfort, while also noting a stiff ride. Treat those as issues to investigate rather than automatic disqualifiers.
During an extended drive, pay attention to pressure under the thighs, whether the lumbar area remains supported, and whether you keep repositioning your hips. Notice how often you change the backrest or steering-wheel position to relieve your knees or shoulders. Test the car on the road surfaces you use most; a firm ride that feels engaging on smooth pavement may be tiring on broken pavement.
Common mistakes when judging tall-driver fit
Using a different WRX as a proxy
Seat design and roof equipment vary by trim. A non-moonroof car cannot confirm clearance in a moonroof version, and a standard seat cannot predict the feel of a Recaro performance-design seat.
Checking only the driver’s side
Front comfort does not answer whether an adult can sit behind the driver. Always test the rear seat with the driver’s position locked in.

Relying on height alone
Anecdotes from one tall owner may not match your torso, legs, or posture. Use them as prompts for what to inspect, not as a cutoff.
Confusing adjustment count with comfort
Power controls and additional seat functions can improve flexibility, but they cannot compensate for a cushion that is too short, bolsters that press your legs, or a steering wheel that does not reach the preferred position.
Who is most likely to be satisfied?
The WRX is most promising for a tall driver who values a relatively upright position, can establish relaxed pedal and steering-wheel geometry, and does not require a tall adult to sit behind them on every trip. It is less certain for a long-torso driver choosing a moonroof car, for someone who needs extensive seat adjustment, or for households that routinely carry two tall adults in the same seating column.
The sensible buying decision is therefore configuration-specific: sit in the exact car, perform the full driver and rear-passenger checks, and include a realistic drive if commuting or road trips are part of the plan.
