Check your own passengers and luggage
Litre figures cannot tell you whether a particular child seat fits, whether its support leg clears the floor, or whether three adults will tolerate the rear bench for an hour. Global NCAP’s fact sheet states: “The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings.” Keep that sentence attached to its context: a 2022 test of a right-hand-drive Kiger with two airbags. Drive the exact manual or automatic configuration you intend to buy. If a dealership offers only a different engine or gearbox, treat that drive as a general seating check, not proof of how your chosen version behaves.

- Set the driving position: Adjust the seat, steering wheel and mirrors. Make sure you can see the road edges without stretching and can fully depress the pedals without locking your knees.
- Start in a quiet area: Check clutch take-up on a manual or creep and brake modulation on an automatic. Look for smooth, predictable responses rather than maximum acceleration.
- Use normal traffic: Join a realistic road and judge whether the engine, gearbox and steering let you make small corrections comfortably. Try Eco and Normal modes if the car provides them.
- Test low-speed control: Approach a junction, speed hump and tight bend slowly. Notice brake feel, steering effort and how easily you can hold a steady position.

Build a local first-car budget
- Obtain an insurance quote using the exact engine, trim, postcode and driver details.
- Ask a Renault service centre for the scheduled-maintenance prices through the period you expect to own the car.
- Estimate fuel from your own weekly kilometres and a conservative consumption assumption, then replace that assumption with figures from local owners or a long test drive when available.
