Mazda has issued safety campaigns for certain vehicles involving steering effort, unintended low-speed braking, powertrain software behavior and, on specified mild hybrids, inaccurate fuel-level readings. Those campaigns identify particular vehicles and defects; they do not prove that every CX-90 will fail or provide a failure probability for an individual car. The most useful reliability check is a VIN-specific recall search combined with documented service records and an independent inspection.
What the reliability evidence actually shows
The CX-90 is a relatively new model, so long-term, model-wide failure data are still limited. Three kinds of evidence are available, and they answer different questions:

- Manufacturer and government recall notices identify a defined defect, affected production range or equipment, and a remedy. They are the strongest evidence for known safety issues, but only for vehicles covered by each campaign.
- Survey-based ratings summarize reported owner experiences. Consumer Reports’ 2026 CX-90 page describes predicted reliability as below average, using data from 2024 and 2025 models. That is a publisher’s prediction, not a percentage chance that any one CX-90 will break down.
- Repair-estimate sites show what a particular job might cost. RepairPal says it does not have enough CX-90 data to calculate an accurate yearly maintenance cost, so its job estimates should not be treated as a typical annual budget.
Model year, build date, mild-hybrid (MHEV) versus plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, equipment and VIN all affect the answer. A later-built vehicle with every applicable campaign completed can present a different risk profile from an early vehicle with missing records.
Documented CX-90 problems and recalls
The following campaigns are documented by Mazda and, for some notices, hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Eligibility is VIN-specific; a vehicle can be outside a broad model-year description or can show a completed remedy even though the campaign once applied.

Steering can suddenly require more effort
Mazda’s March 2024 owner notice covers certain 2024 CX-90s built from December 27, 2022, through December 11, 2023, with the subject steering gear. Excessive friction at the worm gear could cause a sudden increase in steering effort while driving. The specified remedy was to reapply grease and replace the spring with an improved part. Mazda estimated about one hour for the repair. An eligible recall remedy is performed without charge; confirm completion rather than assuming a vehicle was repaired.
False object detection can trigger low-speed braking
A July 2024 notice concerns certain 2024 CX-90s built through September 12, 2023, equipped with Smart Brake Support. Reflections could be interpreted as an approaching object, causing unintended braking at low speed. Mazda said updated software improved the object-detection logic. A driver who experiences unexplained braking should have the vehicle diagnosed promptly and should check campaign status before authorizing unrelated work.
Powertrain control software can cause power loss or a restart problem
In a November 1, 2024 statement, Mazda described several ECU-programming defects in specified 2024 and 2025 CX-90s. Depending on the vehicle, the defect could produce loss of motor power in EV mode on certain PHEVs, prevent an MHEV engine from restarting after an automatic stop, or cause power loss under specified conditions. The remedies were software updates to the relevant control modules. Mazda stated that no accidents or injuries had been reported for the defects described in that statement. That statement applies to the listed defects, not to every possible CX-90 complaint.

Some MHEVs may display fuel remaining after the tank is empty
Mazda’s September 4, 2025 statement covers specified 2024–2025 CX-90 MHEVs. Ethanol-containing fuel could react with materials on the fuel-sending-unit circuit board, allowing the display to show fuel remaining when the tank was empty. The stated risk is running out of fuel and stalling. Mazda reported approximately 88,798 affected CX-90 MHEVs in the United States and U.S. territories. That is the number of vehicles in the campaign population, not a count of confirmed failures. PHEVs were excluded from this fuel-level campaign.

How to check a particular CX-90 before buying or driving it
Do not rely on a model-year search or a seller’s verbal assurance. Use the vehicle identification number (VIN), which is a 17-character code, and create a paper trail.
- Run the VIN through Mazda’s recall lookup. Mazda’s portal reported an update on October 11, 2026 and returns pending recalls for the entered vehicle. Save or print the result.
- Check NHTSA’s VIN tool as a second official source. Databases can update at different times, so compare the campaign numbers and descriptions.
- Ask for repair orders. Request invoices showing the campaign number, date, mileage and parts or software installed. “Recall complete” without paperwork is weaker evidence than a dealer repair order.
- Confirm the powertrain and build details. Identify whether the vehicle is an MHEV or PHEV and note its production date. This determines which notices are relevant.
- Review non-recall history. Look for repeated warning lights, drivability complaints, steering or braking work, software updates and periods when the vehicle was out of service.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to road-test cold and warm starts, low-speed braking, steering effort, hybrid operation, charging (for a PHEV), warning messages and fuel-gauge behavior. A general inspection cannot replace a dealer’s campaign lookup.
- Get written estimates for observed defects. Have a shop identify whether a symptom is covered by a campaign, warranty or neither before you agree to paid work.
Repair costs: useful ranges and important limits
There is no dependable CX-90-wide annual repair-cost figure in the available data. RepairPal explicitly says its model data are insufficient for an accurate yearly maintenance estimate. The site does publish estimates for individual operations, but those figures vary by location and date and are not Mazda dealer quotes, failure frequencies or lifetime ownership budgets.

Do not add these ranges together to create a hypothetical ownership bill. A fuel-sending-unit concern that is covered by a recall should not be budgeted as an owner-paid repair. For a non-recall problem, obtain an itemized, VIN-specific estimate that separates diagnosis, parts, labor, taxes and any calibration or software charges.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 page labels predicted CX-90 reliability below average and says the prediction uses 2024 and 2025 model data. Its 2024 page describes the score as based on its latest subscriber survey of 2024 CX-90 owners. A displayed summary on the 2025 page lists two NHTSA recalls, while the 2024 page displays 11 recalls. These page snapshots can change as databases and survey samples are updated, and the differing counts illustrate why a rating should not be read as a fixed model-wide total.
Use the rating as one input alongside the exact VIN, campaign completion and maintenance history. A survey result cannot tell you whether the specific vehicle parked in front of you has had a steering repair, a software update or a fuel-sender campaign remedy.

MHEV versus PHEV: why the distinction matters
The CX-90’s powertrain changes the relevant risk checks. The fuel-level sending-unit campaign described above applies to specified MHEVs and excludes PHEVs. The November 2024 software statement includes different behaviors for certain PHEVs and MHEVs: an EV-mode motor-power issue is associated with certain PHEVs, while failure to restart after automatic engine stop is associated with an MHEV concern. Decode the VIN and equipment list before deciding that a recall search covers the vehicle you are considering.
For a PHEV, add a full charge-and-drive check to the inspection: verify charging, electric-mode engagement, transition to the gasoline engine and warning messages. For an MHEV, pay particular attention to auto-stop/restart behavior and whether the fuel gauge tracks actual refueling. These checks do not diagnose a safety defect; they identify symptoms that warrant a Mazda-authorized diagnosis.
Common owner questions about mileage and everyday reliability
What is the highest mileage a CX-90 can reach?
The available material does not establish a verified maximum mileage or a statistically supported service life for the CX-90. Individual owner reports can show that a particular vehicle accumulated substantial mileage, but anecdotes do not measure failure rates. For a high-mileage example, condition, maintenance records, campaign completion and an inspection are more informative than an internet mileage claim.

Does a recall mean every CX-90 is unreliable?
No. A recall identifies a safety-related defect in a defined population. It does not mean every vehicle has experienced the defect, nor does it establish how often an unrelated component fails. Conversely, a vehicle with no open recalls is not guaranteed trouble-free; normal wear, deferred maintenance and non-recall faults remain possible.
Will Mazda pay for any repair after a recall?
Mazda’s free-repair policy applies to eligible safety-recall remedies. It does not automatically convert an unrelated warning light, wear item or out-of-warranty repair into a free repair. Ask the dealer to identify the campaign or warranty provision in writing.
A practical decision framework for a used CX-90
- Lower-risk candidate: later production date or a well-documented early vehicle, no pending campaigns, complete dealer records, no repeated symptoms and a clean independent inspection.
- Negotiation candidate: an otherwise sound vehicle with an open campaign that a Mazda dealer confirms can be completed, provided the buyer verifies parts or software availability and obtains a written completion appointment.
- Walk-away candidate: missing VIN access, refusal to provide records, unresolved steering or braking symptoms, unexplained power loss, repeated stalling, or a seller who insists on payment before a safety concern is diagnosed.
Also compare the remaining factory warranty and its exact terms for that VIN and market. Coverage can differ by model year, powertrain and region; the applicable Mazda warranty booklet controls.
What to do if you already own one
- Check the VIN for pending campaigns and schedule eligible work with a Mazda dealer.
- Keep every repair order, software-update record and mileage entry in one file.
- Stop treating steering changes, unintended braking, stalling or power loss as normal characteristics. Contact a dealer promptly and describe when the symptom occurs.
- For a non-recall repair, request diagnosis first and an itemized estimate before authorizing parts.
- After campaign work, verify that the repair order identifies the campaign and that warning lights or drivability symptoms were resolved during the road test.
The CX-90 can be a reasonable purchase when the individual vehicle has complete campaign work and strong records, but early-production examples warrant more verification than a simple reputation score. Treat recall status, service documentation and a professional inspection as prerequisites, not optional extras.
