Short answer: the Mahindra Thar OG looks more daily-use focused than the outgoing three-door Thar on paper, but a definitive practicality verdict is not yet possible. Mahindra lists revised suspension, frequency-dependent damping, electric power steering, extra NVH damping and upgraded safety equipment. However, there are no independent measurements yet for ride comfort, cabin noise, fuel economy, rear-seat access, luggage space, parking ease or long-term ownership.
That makes the Thar OG a vehicle to evaluate by test drive rather than by its feature list alone. Drive the exact engine, transmission and drivetrain you intend to buy, bring your normal passengers, load your usual bags and test it in the streets and parking spaces where you will actually use it.

What the Thar OG is, and why the daily-use question matters
The Thar OG is Mahindra’s newly launched successor to its three-door Thar. Mahindra’s launch material presents it as a more refined, everyday-capable interpretation of the familiar off-road SUV rather than as a conventional urban crossover. That distinction matters: a vehicle can gain quieter suspension, easier steering and stronger safety equipment without becoming as easy to live with as a family hatchback or a five-door SUV.

The launch release listed an introductory ex-showroom starting price of ₹10.32 lakh, with introductory pricing applying to deliveries through 30 November 2026. The evidence is promising but not a road test
The claims about refinement come from Mahindra’s own specifications and launch descriptions. They establish what hardware the company has fitted, not how the vehicle performs on a rough commute, in a congested city or with a full cabin. No independent road test, owner survey, measured fuel-economy result, current independent crash-test result or long-term reliability data is established here.
What Mahindra changed for everyday refinement
Mahindra says the Thar OG uses its M_Glyde 4G platform. The listed chassis and control changes include revised rear PENTALINK suspension with Watts Link, DAVINCI damping technology with frequency-dependent damping, electric power steering and enhanced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) damping. In theory, those changes target the complaints that most affect daily driving: jolts over broken surfaces, steering effort at low speed and mechanical noise entering the cabin.
Suspension and ride
The revised rear suspension and damping hardware may help the vehicle control body movement and absorb different road inputs more consistently. Mahindra does not publish a ride-comfort score, suspension travel measurement for the OG, or a comparison test against the predecessor. You should therefore treat “improved refinement” as an engineering objective and equipment description, not as proof that the ride will be soft or car-like.
Steering and manoeuvring
Electric power steering should reduce the effort required during parking and tight turns compared with a heavier steering system. Mahindra’s launch release says, “Electric Power Steering (EPS) makes manoeuvring feel incredibly effortless.” That is promotional language from the manufacturer, not an independently verified conclusion. Test steering weight with the exact wheel and tyre package on your chosen trim, because tyre width and alignment can affect the feel you experience.

Cabin noise and vibration
Enhanced NVH damping is intended to reduce the amount of engine, tyre and suspension noise reaching occupants. There is no published decibel measurement or highway comparison, so the only reliable way to judge the cabin is to drive the vehicle at the speeds and on the surfaces you normally encounter. Listen with the audio system off, use the rear seats as well as the driver’s seat, and check whether conversation remains comfortable at motorway speed.
Practicality questions that are still unanswered
Seats and rear-seat access
The launch information identifies the Thar OG as the successor to the three-door Thar but does not independently confirm the OG’s current seating capacity, rear-seat legroom, entry dimensions or child-seat ergonomics. A three-door layout can work for occasional rear passengers but becomes inconvenient when children, older adults or frequent passengers must climb in and out. Do not assume the predecessor’s layout or comfort carries over unchanged.
At the dealership, have every regular rear passenger enter without assistance. Check whether the front seat returns to a repeatable position, whether the opening is wide enough for a child seat, and whether the rear occupants can see out comfortably. Install your actual child restraint if possible rather than judging compatibility from brochure photographs.

Luggage and everyday loading
Mahindra’s searched launch material does not state the Thar OG’s cargo volume, usable floor length, opening dimensions or maximum load with the rear seats occupied. That leaves a major practical question unresolved. Bring the items you carry most often—shopping bags, a stroller, work equipment or weekend luggage—and place them in the vehicle during your test visit. Check whether the load area remains useful with all intended passengers seated.

Visibility, parking and urban manoeuvrability
The OG’s actual turning circle, bonnet visibility, rear-quarter view and camera coverage are not established in the available material. Front parking sensors are listed among the safety changes, while a rear camera and tyre-pressure monitoring appear in the ZXT incremental equipment list. Equipment varies by trim, so verify the exact vehicle rather than assuming every Thar OG has the same parking aids.
Test the SUV in your own parking garage, on a narrow residential street and beside the kerbs you use regularly. A steering system that feels light in an open dealership lot may not compensate for poor sightlines or a body shape that is difficult to place in a tight bay.
Engines, transmissions and drivetrains
Mahindra lists three engines for the Thar OG. The figures below are manufacturer-published outputs, not independent performance or economy measurements.

The launch pricing table includes rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, with manual and automatic transmissions available in several combinations. The exact pairing depends on the variant. For mostly paved commuting, compare the additional cost, weight and operating implications of four-wheel drive against your actual need for traction. For frequent stop-start traffic, an automatic may reduce driver workload, but you must confirm which engine and trim combinations are offered in your market.

Safety equipment: useful improvements, but trim details matter
Mahindra’s launch release lists six airbags, four disc brakes, ESP 9.3 and front parking sensors among the safety changes. Those are meaningful additions to the equipment list, but they should not be read as a range-wide promise for every convenience or restraint feature.

For a family vehicle, ask for the complete variant-specific safety sheet, not a summary of the top trim. Check whether the child-seat anchors, camera, sensors and tyre-pressure display you need are standard, optional or unavailable.

Mahindra’s official launch information does not state fuel economy for any Thar OG engine or drivetrain. Engine power and torque cannot be converted into a credible mileage estimate because consumption depends on traffic, tyre choice, four-wheel-drive use, load, driving style and transmission.
Until independent testing or a sufficiently large owner sample is available, budget conservatively using your own annual distance and a range of plausible fuel prices rather than a brochure mileage figure. Ask the dealer for scheduled-service intervals, warranty terms, tyre sizes and replacement costs. Those ownership details can materially change the cost of a vehicle that is used every day, especially if it spends most of its time in short urban trips.

How to conduct a meaningful Thar OG practicality test
A short dealership loop is not enough to answer the daily-use question. Use this sequence with the exact variant you are considering:
- Confirm the specification. Write down the engine, manual or automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, tyre size and trim. Make sure the demonstrator matches the proposed vehicle.
- Drive your real route types. Include stop-start traffic, speed breakers, rough surfaces, open highway and a tight parking area. Note suspension reactions, steering effort, clutch or automatic calibration and visibility.
- Check refinement objectively. Turn the audio system off for part of the drive. Listen for tyre, engine and suspension noise from both rows and hold a normal conversation at highway speed.
- Bring your household. Have the usual rear passengers enter, buckle up and sit for at least 15 minutes. Check knee room, seat height, ventilation and ease of exit.
- Load your normal luggage. Use real bags or equipment and test whether they fit without blocking occupants, the rear view or access to emergency items.
- Test parking aids. Use the camera and sensors in a narrow bay, reverse around a corner and check sightlines without relying entirely on electronics.
- Record ownership information. Obtain a written on-road quotation, service schedule, warranty coverage, tyre specification and the price of any required options.
Which type of Thar OG buyer is most likely to be satisfied?
Mostly urban commuting
Prioritise the lightest steering, automatic-transmission availability, parking sensors and the trim with the safety equipment your household requires. Confirm that the vehicle fits your garage and that rear access is acceptable before placing a deposit.
Mixed city and highway use
Compare both diesel outputs and the petrol engine on the same route. The larger-output engines may feel more relaxed when loaded, but no independent evidence establishes which one is quieter or more economical. Your test should include long steady-speed sections and overtaking with passengers aboard.

Four-wheel drive may be the reason you are considering the Thar OG, but do not let off-road capability substitute for family practicality. Verify the exact drivetrain, ground-clearance claims in the official specification and the daily compromises in turning, loading and rear-seat access.
Do not reuse the predecessor’s dimensions as OG facts
Mahindra’s prior Thar model page lists four seats, a 3,985 mm length, 1,820 mm width and a 2,450 mm wheelbase. Those numbers describe the predecessor and provide context only. The searched OG launch material does not independently confirm that the new vehicle has the same dimensions or seating arrangement. Use the current OG specification sheet and measure the demonstrator if garage fit, child-seat space or luggage capacity is decisive.
What is established, and what you still need to verify
- Established by Mahindra: the successor positioning, M_Glyde 4G platform, listed suspension and damping revisions, electric power steering, enhanced NVH damping, three advertised engines, multiple drivetrain and transmission configurations, and the stated safety additions.
- Not established by independent evidence: ride quality, highway stability, cabin noise, fuel economy, parking ease, rear-seat comfort, cargo volume, long-term reliability and running costs.
- Time-sensitive: introductory pricing from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom in the launch table, with the ₹10.32 lakh starting price valid for deliveries through 30 November 2026; dealer pricing and schemes at invoicing control the final purchase amount.
Verdict: practical potential, not yet a proven daily driver
The Thar OG is a plausible daily-use SUV for buyers who value its shape and available off-road hardware but want less effort and harshness in routine driving. Its revised rear suspension, damping strategy, electric steering, NVH work, four-disc braking and expanded safety equipment address several areas that matter in everyday use.
It is not yet possible to call it broadly practical for families or commuters because the decisive evidence is missing: current OG seating and cargo measurements, rear-seat access, real-world mileage, independent ride and noise results, and ownership data. Treat the model as a promising on-paper improvement. Make the purchase decision only after the exact variant passes your route, passenger, luggage, parking and cost checks.
