Is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe a Good Choice for More Power? Output, Trade-offs, and Availability

Jeep rates the Wrangler 4xe at 375 hp and 470 lb-ft, giving it a clear output advantage over the V6 but not the Wrangler 392. Its discontinued status, 21-mile electric estimate and charging requirements determine whether that power upgrade fits your needs.

Yes—if you mean more rated power than the conventional Wrangler V6. Jeep rates the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, versus 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft for the 3.6L V6 listed in Jeep’s 2026 Wrangler FAQ. However, the 4xe is not the most powerful Wrangler in Jeep’s published comparison: the Wrangler 392’s 6.4L V8 is rated at 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. The bigger buying issue is availability: Jeep says Wrangler 4xe production has ended, although limited dealer inventory may remain.

That makes the 4xe a potentially strong power upgrade when you find a suitable remaining-stock or used example, especially if you can charge at home. It is a less straightforward choice if you want the highest Wrangler output, do not have a dependable charging routine, or expect to order a new one.

What “more power” means with the Wrangler 4xe

Power can mean several different things: a higher horsepower number, stronger pulling force, quicker response when you press the accelerator, or faster acceleration measured by an independent test. The Wrangler 4xe clearly improves on the first two when compared with the 3.6L V6, but Jeep’s published ratings are not the same as a third-party acceleration test.

Jeep lists the 4xe at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Those are manufacturer figures for the plug-in-hybrid Wrangler. Jeep describes the electric motors as delivering instant torque and says the Hybrid drive mode provides the model’s maximum horsepower, instant torque and best acceleration. That description explains why the 4xe can feel more immediate than a conventional engine when both systems are contributing, but it does not establish a specific 0-to-60-mph time.

  • Off-road tires. Working spring suspension. Waterslide decal.
  • Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and soft black tires. Paint and glue not included.

The 4xe’s headline advantage is therefore straightforward: against the cited V6, it has 90 more horsepower and 210 more lb-ft of rated torque. Against the Wrangler 392, the comparison changes completely. The 392 has 95 more horsepower while matching the 4xe’s stated 470 lb-ft of torque.

Wrangler 392 6.4L V8 (2026 Wrangler FAQ) 470 hp 470 lb-ft Jeep-published 2026 Wrangler figure

The table gives two different answers to “Is it more powerful?” If your baseline is the V6, yes: the 4xe has substantially higher published horsepower and torque. If your baseline is the 392, no on horsepower and equal on the stated torque rating. The 392 is the output leader in Jeep’s cited comparison.

How the 4xe delivers its power

Hybrid mode

Jeep calls Hybrid the default mode. Its description says the system combines torque from the 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine and the electric motors. Jeep also says this mode provides maximum horsepower, instant torque and the best acceleration. Electric power is used first, so the vehicle may draw from the battery before relying more heavily on the engine.

This arrangement is important for expectations. The 375-hp rating describes the combined system, not a gasoline engine that makes 375 hp by itself. The vehicle’s response depends on battery charge, the selected drive mode and how the control system blends the engine and motors. Jeep’s wording supports an immediate electric response, but it does not promise identical acceleration in every state of charge or driving situation.

Electric mode

With usable battery charge, Electric mode lets the Wrangler operate without the gasoline engine for suitable driving conditions. Jeep rates electric operation at up to 21 miles when the battery has more than 1% charge. That is Jeep’s estimate, not a guarantee for every route, temperature, speed, load or terrain.

Electric mode can make the 4xe feel responsive at low speeds because the motor supplies torque without waiting for engine revs to build. It is most useful when your regular trips fit within the available electric range and you can recharge between them. Once the battery is depleted or conditions require it, the gasoline engine becomes part of the propulsion strategy.

What the ratings do not tell you

No independent acceleration result is established here, so it would be misleading to attach a 0-to-60-mph number to the 4xe. Horsepower and torque ratings are useful for comparing powertrains from the same manufacturer, but they do not account for every factor that affects acceleration, including vehicle configuration, tires, payload, surface and battery state.

Charging requirements and daily use

The 4xe is a plug-in hybrid, so charging is part of the ownership decision rather than an optional efficiency feature. Jeep gives two recharge estimates:

  • 240-volt Level II: about two hours, according to Jeep.
  • 120-volt Level I: about 12 hours using the included charger, according to Jeep.

These are manufacturer estimates. Actual time can vary with the electrical installation, charging conditions and the vehicle’s battery state. A Level I connection may work when the Wrangler is parked overnight for long periods, but Level II is more practical when you want to restore charge during a shorter stop or between multiple daily trips.

Home charging checklist

  • Confirm that the parking location has a safe, suitable outlet or a place where a 240-volt circuit can be installed.
  • Check the exact connector and equipment requirements for the particular 4xe model year you are considering.
  • Have electrical work evaluated by a qualified professional rather than assuming an existing outlet is adequate.
  • Verify installation availability, local program terms and equipment compatibility before paying for a charger.

Jeep describes an available Level II home charging station and directs customers to Qmerit for scheduling installation by a certified technician. Treat that as a service path to verify, not as a guarantee that a particular installer, program or hardware package is available in your location.

Availability changes the buying decision

Jeep’s discontinued-vehicle support information says the Wrangler 4xe is no longer in production, while limited dealer inventory may remain. That means a shopper should not approach it like a normal current-model order. The realistic choices are a remaining new vehicle, a dealer demonstrator or a used 4xe.

If you find remaining new inventory

Confirm the vehicle identification number, model year, in-service date, warranty coverage and whether it has been sitting unused. Ask the dealer to demonstrate charging, show the included charging equipment and provide the vehicle’s service records. A vehicle described as “new” may still have been built earlier and stored for a significant period, so the paperwork and condition matter more than the label.

If you shop used

Evaluate the specific vehicle rather than relying on the 375-hp specification alone. A pre-purchase inspection should include the high-voltage system, charging behavior, warning lights, software updates, cooling systems, brakes, suspension and any evidence of accident or water damage. Request maintenance records and verify what warranty protection remains for the hybrid components.

Jeep directs owners to Mopar-certified service centers for 4xe support and genuine parts. Before buying far from home, identify a qualified service location that can work on the high-voltage system and ask how the center handles diagnosis, routine maintenance and warranty claims.

When the 4xe is the better power choice

You are moving up from the V6

The 4xe makes the clearest case for someone comparing it directly with the 3.6L V6. Its published output is higher in both horsepower and torque, and Jeep specifically attributes instant electric torque and the best acceleration to Hybrid mode. If your definition of “more power” is a stronger specification sheet and a potentially more immediate response, the 4xe meets that goal.

You can charge consistently

Regular charging lets you use the electric operating capability Jeep advertises rather than carrying the plug-in hardware without taking advantage of it. A home Level II setup is especially convenient, but even Level I charging can fit a routine in which the Wrangler remains parked for many hours.

You value combined capability over the highest horsepower number

The 4xe’s appeal is the combination of a turbocharged engine, electric motors and plug-in operation. It is not the horsepower champion, but it offers a different balance from both the V6 and the V8. That balance can make sense when you want more rated output than the V6 without choosing the 392 solely for its larger engine.

When another Wrangler makes more sense

You want the maximum published horsepower

The Wrangler 392 is the clear choice within Jeep’s cited comparison if horsepower is the deciding metric: 470 hp versus 375 hp for the 4xe. It also matches the 4xe’s 470 lb-ft torque rating. The 4xe cannot be described as the most powerful Wrangler on those figures.

You cannot charge where you live

Without dependable access to a suitable outlet, the 4xe’s plug-in capability is harder to use as intended. You would still be buying a vehicle built around a hybrid system, but the routine benefit of restoring electric range would be reduced. Check your parking and electrical situation before treating the 4xe’s power rating as the only deciding factor.

You need a simple current-model purchase

Because production has ended, availability, condition and support require more checking than with a readily orderable model. If you prefer to select a current model year, configure a vehicle and buy from normal inventory, the discontinued status is a substantial disadvantage.

A practical inspection and comparison process

  1. Set your baseline. Decide whether you are comparing the 4xe with the 285-hp/260-lb-ft V6 or the 470-hp/470-lb-ft 392. The answer to “more power” depends on that starting point.
  2. Verify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, trim, VIN, mileage, in-service date and warranty status. Do not assume every 4xe listing has the same remaining coverage.
  3. Test the charging system. Confirm that the vehicle accepts a charge, inspect the cable and connector, and ask for evidence of normal charging. A seller who cannot demonstrate charging should explain why.
  4. Check service support. Locate a Mopar-certified facility that can service the 4xe and ask whether high-voltage diagnostics are available locally.
  5. Match charging to your routine. Compare the Jeep estimates of roughly two hours on Level II and 12 hours on Level I with the time the vehicle actually spends parked.
  6. Compare alternatives honestly. If the 392’s 470 hp is the real target, the 4xe is not a substitute on the published numbers. If the V6 is the baseline, quantify the 90-hp and 210-lb-ft increase and then decide whether charging and discontinued-model risk are acceptable.
  7. Price the individual vehicle, not the old list price. Remaining inventory and used examples can differ widely in condition, warranty and seller support. The right comparison is between specific vehicles you can inspect and service.

Bottom-line decision framework

Your priority How the 4xe fits Decision signal
More output than the 3.6L V6 Strong fit: 375 hp and 470 lb-ft versus 285 hp and 260 lb-ft Favor the 4xe if the vehicle is in good condition
Highest Wrangler horsepower Not the leader: the 392 is rated at 470 hp Look at the 392 instead
Immediate response Jeep says Hybrid mode combines engine and motor torque and provides its best acceleration Consider a test drive, without treating it as an independent performance test
Electric commuting capability Up to 21 miles in Electric mode, according to Jeep Favor it only if regular charging is practical
Easy new-vehicle ordering Production has ended; limited dealer inventory may remain Verify local stock or shop the used market
Long-term support Jeep points owners to Mopar-certified service Confirm a qualified service center before purchase

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a good choice for more power when your reference point is the V6, you appreciate the way Jeep says the electric motors deliver torque, and you can live with charging and discontinued-model constraints. It is not the right answer if “more power” means the highest Wrangler horsepower, because the 392 is rated higher. For any 4xe you find, the final decision should be based on that vehicle’s condition, battery and charging operation, warranty and local service access—not on the specification sheet alone.
