It can be a good engine, but the badge alone does not make an old Jeep a good purchase. The Jeep 4.0-liter (242-cubic-inch) inline-six has a simple, durable design and a long service history in Cherokee, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee applications. However, age, overheating, neglected maintenance, oil leaks, drivability symptoms and the condition of the rest of the vehicle matter more than its reputation. Buy the individual Jeep after a cold start, road test, records review, code scan and inspection by a qualified mechanic.
What the Jeep 4.0 actually is
The 4.0 is an inline-six (I6), not a V6. The 1996 Grand Cherokee ZJ service manual describes it as an overhead-valve, 4.0-liter six-cylinder with a cast-iron block, cast-iron cylinder head and seven crankshaft main bearings. JeepTech also describes hydraulic lifters and electronic fuel injection. Those characteristics explain why the engine has a reputation for being mechanically straightforward, but they do not prove that any particular used engine is healthy.

You will also see the engine identified as 242 cubic inches. Output depends on the vehicle, calibration and model year. JeepTech lists examples of 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque for one Wrangler configuration, and 185 horsepower and 220 lb-ft for XJ/ZJ applications. The figures are examples, not a universal specification for every 4.0-powered Jeep. Why buyers like it—and what that reputation cannot tell you
Reasons it remains attractive
- The inline-six layout and overhead-valve design are comparatively simple to understand and service.
- Cast-iron construction is substantial, but it does not make an engine immune to overheating or poor maintenance.
- Fuel injection provides normal starting and drivability when the ignition, sensors and fuel system are working correctly.
- The engine was installed in several Jeep lines, so model-specific service information is widely available.
Why reputation is not a buying guarantee
The available service information does not establish a fleet-wide failure rate, a guaranteed mileage, or a universally best model year. It also does not prove that a listed condition is common in every 4.0. Claims that every engine will reach a particular mileage should be treated as anecdote unless backed by verifiable data.

A neglected engine can suffer expensive damage regardless of its basic design. A Jeep that has overheated, been run low on oil, developed persistent misfires or accumulated years of deferred repairs can be a poor purchase even when the engine family is generally well regarded. Conversely, a high-mileage Jeep with consistent maintenance, stable temperature behavior and documented repairs may be a better buy than a lower-mileage vehicle with missing records.
Which Jeeps used the 4.0?
The references reviewed cover Cherokee, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee applications. A service bulletin for a specific misfire condition lists 1999–2004 WJ Grand Cherokee, 1999–2004 TJ Wrangler and 1999–2001 XJ Cherokee configurations equipped with the 4.0. That list is the bulletin’s application range, not a complete production history for every market and year. Confirm the engine, build date, transmission and market from the vehicle identification number (VIN), under-hood labels and records.

Documented issues to investigate
Light-load misfire at cruising speed
Jeep bulletin 09-003-03, dated August 1, 2003, describes a possible misfire at 50–70 mph under light load on the specified WJ, TJ and XJ vehicles. The condition may be more noticeable below 32°F and can set P0300 or a single-cylinder misfire code. The bulletin overview calls for inspecting exhaust valves and decarbonizing when necessary. Oil around the rear main-seal area
Bulletin 09-010-04 Rev. A, dated October 1, 2004, applies to specified 1997–2005 TJ Wranglers with 4.0-liter engines and listed manual transmissions built before September 2, 2004. It explains that dirt and debris can collect outside the rear main seal and contribute to seepage; off-road use is noted as a circumstance in which the condition may occur more frequently. The bulletin’s procedure is application-specific.
Oil at the bellhousing or the back of the engine therefore deserves investigation, but its visible location does not prove that the rear main seal itself is leaking. Oil can travel from higher or nearby sources. Clean the area or have a technician trace the leak before pricing a repair.

Ignition-cable and rough-running clues on early vehicles
An indexed 1995 Jeep bulletin covers vehicles with 2.5L, 4.0L or 5.2L engines built before April 1, 1994. It associates rough idle, an engine miss or a hard/no-start complaint without fault codes with checking ignition-cable date codes. The retrieved page is an index/search excerpt rather than the complete bulletin, so treat it as a narrow lead for an early-build vehicle, not as a general 4.0 failure pattern. Do not overread an inaccessible service entry
A NHTSA-hosted document indexed for a 1999 Grand Cherokee 4WD with the 4.0 includes a June 1999 PCM no-start entry in its search excerpt, but the available text does not establish the entry’s scope, cause or repair. It cannot support a reliability conclusion. The document is at NHTSA if you need to verify information for a specific vehicle.

How to inspect a used Jeep 4.0 before buying
- Verify identity. Record the VIN, model year, Jeep model, engine designation, transmission and build date. Confirm that any bulletin or repair information you find actually covers that combination.
- Read the records before starting the engine. Look for oil changes, cooling-system work, thermostat or radiator replacement, overheating events, cylinder-head or valve work, ignition repairs and previous warning-light diagnoses. Missing records are not proof of neglect, but they increase uncertainty.
- Insist on a cold start. Arrive early enough that the engine has not been warmed up. Watch for extended cranking, smoke, an uneven idle, loud mechanical noise, warning lights that fail to illuminate during the bulb check, or a temperature gauge that behaves abnormally as the engine warms.
- Inspect for leaks. Check the front, sides and rear of the engine, the oil pan, and the engine-to-transmission junction. Note the color and freshness of any fluid. A leak’s apparent location is only a clue; have its source confirmed.
- Watch the cooling system. During warm-up and the road test, the temperature should behave consistently rather than climbing toward overheating. Ask specifically whether the Jeep has ever overheated. Evidence of repeated overheating warrants a deeper mechanical inspection before purchase.
- Road-test under varied loads. Include idle, acceleration, steady cruising and light-load operation around 50–70 mph when safe. Note hesitation, a repeatable miss, vibration, loss of power, smoke or a flashing check-engine lamp. Cold-weather symptoms may not appear on a warm day.
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes. A compatible OBD-II reader can show stored or pending codes and monitor readiness. It is an inexpensive screening tool, not a substitute for diagnosis; a recently cleared or clean scan cannot certify the engine.
- Get an independent inspection. A qualified mechanic can verify leak sources, assess cooling-system pressure, inspect ignition and fuel systems, and decide whether compression, leak-down or other tests are justified by the symptoms. Make the purchase conditional on the results.
How to judge what you find

Comparing two 4.0 Jeeps
When two candidates both have the inline-six, rank them in this order:
- Current mechanical condition: Favor the Jeep with normal temperature behavior, clean starting and no unresolved noise, smoke, misfire or significant leak.
- Evidence of maintenance and repairs: Receipts and consistent service records reduce uncertainty more than a small difference in odometer reading.
- Application-specific information: Check whether the vehicle falls within a relevant bulletin range and whether documented repairs addressed its symptoms.
- Overall Jeep condition: Inspect the transmission, transfer case, differentials, driveshafts, frame, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system and body. A healthy engine cannot compensate for a severely neglected drivetrain or chassis.
Do not choose a model year solely because internet anecdotes call it the “best.” The available sources do not support a categorical best-year ranking. The better choice is the Jeep whose condition, documentation and inspection results are strongest.
What a sensible buying decision looks like
A 4.0-powered Jeep is a reasonable candidate when the seller allows a cold inspection and independent evaluation, the engine reaches and holds normal operating temperature, no serious symptoms appear during the road test, and records show responsible maintenance. A minor, clearly diagnosed seep or a repairable ignition fault may be negotiable if the price reflects the work.
