Consumer Reports’ indexed 2025 model page expects about average reliability, while owner reports for earlier trucks describe high-voltage battery-module replacements and in-car-electronics problems. A safety recall affecting certain 2022–2024 trucks adds an important VIN-specific check, but it does not prove that every Lightning is unreliable.
For a new or used truck, the practical answer depends on the model year, battery configuration and trim, original warranty start date, completed recall work, repair records, charging access and expected depreciation. Treat the individual vehicle—not the nameplate alone—as the thing you are evaluating.

What the reliability evidence actually shows
There is no verified, year-stamped fleetwide failure-rate statistic for the F-150 Lightning in the available evidence. That matters because a qualitative forecast and a handful of owner complaints answer different questions.

Owner reports
Indexed Consumer Reports owner comments for earlier model years include reports of high-voltage battery modules being replaced under warranty. An indexed 2024 model page also includes an owner report describing an in-car-electronics problem. These are individual experiences, not a measured failure rate or proof that either issue is the Lightning’s most common fault.
Use those reports as prompts for inspection questions: ask whether the truck has had battery-module work, what diagnostic codes were recorded, whether software updates were applied and whether the repair was completed under warranty. Do not convert the existence of complaints into a percentage chance that your truck will fail.
The 2022–2024 high-voltage battery recall
The most actionable reliability and safety check is Ford recall 25S18, identified by NHTSA as campaign 25V131. Ford’s April 2025 owner notice covered certain 2022–2024 F-150 Lightning trucks. It describes a possible internal short in the high-voltage battery after repeated charge/discharge cycles, creating an increased vehicle-fire risk.

What affected owners were told to do
For an affected vehicle waiting for the remedy, Ford advised limiting charging to 80%. The notice said not to charge to 100% while waiting and did not direct owners to stop driving. The repair was to be performed at no cost when the required battery arrays became available.
Those instructions apply only to vehicles covered by the recall and can change as Ford issues updated guidance. Do not assume that an 80% limit is required for every Lightning, and do not assume that a truck is safe simply because its model year appears on a general list.
How to verify a specific truck
- Record the complete 17-character VIN from the truck and its paperwork.
- Run that VIN through Ford’s recall lookup and the NHTSA recall lookup.
- Ask the seller or dealer to show whether recall 25S18/25V131 is open, completed or not applicable.
- Request the repair order or invoice if the battery remedy was completed.
- Confirm that any current charging instruction shown in Ford’s owner communications matches the truck’s present status.
Recall counts change, and a recall can cover only a subset of a model year. A broad count for “the Lightning” is therefore not a reliability score.

Warranty protection and what it means for a used Lightning
Ford’s current F-150 Lightning owner-support information lists several separate warranties. The high-voltage battery warranty is the most important for long-term risk: 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford also states that the battery coverage includes a capacity-retention floor of 70% during that period, in addition to repair or replacement for defects in materials or workmanship, subject to the warranty guide and exclusions.

| Coverage | Ford’s listed term | Used-vehicle question |
|---|---|---|
| High-voltage battery and EV components | 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first; includes a 70% capacity-retention threshold | What was the original in-service date, current mileage and documented battery history? |
| Powertrain | 5 years/60,000 miles | Has the time or mileage limit already expired? |
| Bumper-to-bumper | 3 years/36,000 miles | Which general repairs remain covered, and are exclusions relevant? |
| Safety restraints | 5 years/60,000 miles | Is the restraint coverage still within both limits? |
Warranty coverage reduces exposure to qualifying repairs; it does not make every used truck equally low risk. Confirm the original warranty start date, mileage, transfer rules, prior repairs, maintenance records and any exclusions in Ford’s detailed warranty guide. A truck that is close to the time or mileage limit can have a very different risk profile from one with several years of battery coverage remaining.
Ford’s ongoing owner support
Ford says software updates, connected-services support and replacement parts will continue for existing owners. In its current F-150 Lightning owner-support FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026, Ford states: “Our support for existing owners remains fully unchanged.” That is Ford’s stated policy, not a promise that a particular dealer has a part in stock or that repair turnaround will be identical in every location.

Common issues to investigate before buying
High-voltage battery and modules
Ask for every battery-related repair order, not just the most recent one. Look for module or battery-array replacement, diagnostic findings, charging-related warnings and whether work was performed under the high-voltage warranty. A completed recall remedy is different from an unrelated warranty repair, so have the paperwork identify both.
In-car electronics
The indexed owner evidence includes an in-car-electronics complaint for a 2024 truck, but it does not establish frequency. During a test drive, operate the displays, cameras, driver-assistance alerts, audio, phone integration, climate controls and charging controls. Record intermittent faults rather than accepting “it just needs a reset” without a service record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSoftware and service history
Ask which software updates were installed and whether the truck has outstanding campaigns. Connected features can depend on software and subscription status, so verify that the functions you need work with the account and equipment included in the sale.

Charging behavior and equipment
Confirm that the truck can accept a normal AC charge and that the included charging equipment is present and undamaged. If you will rely on home charging, inspect the electrical installation and calculate the expected cost using your utility’s rate and charging schedule. The available evidence does not establish a universal charging-cost figure for every owner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Five-year ownership cost: a transparent example
Edmunds lists a modeled five-year True Cost to Own estimate of $61,248 for a selected 2025 F-150 Lightning Flash. The estimate assumes 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, a 10% down payment, a 60-month loan and above-average credit. Edmunds describes the tool as comparative rather than predictive, so these figures are an example for that trim and those assumptions—not a quote for every Lightning.
| Category | Five-year estimate | What can change it |
|---|---|---|
| Depreciation | $30,388 | Purchase price, incentives, trim, mileage, market demand and resale timing |
| Taxes and fees | $3,573 | Registration rules, local taxes and transaction charges |
| Financing | $13,209 | Interest rate, down payment, loan term and credit profile |
| Fuel/electricity | $4,805 | Electricity rates, charging mix, mileage and driving conditions |
| Insurance | $4,397 | Location, driver profile, coverage limits and insurer |
| Repairs | $818 | Warranty status, failures, labor rates and downtime |
| Maintenance | $4,058 | Tire wear, service schedule, mileage and local labor costs |
Depreciation is the largest modeled category, exceeding the combined repair and maintenance estimates by a wide margin. That does not mean depreciation will be the same for your truck; it means resale value deserves as much attention as routine service when you set a budget.
The estimate also does not guarantee protection from an unusual battery or electronics repair, missed work while the truck is unavailable, towing-related expenses, tire replacement or local energy-price changes. The available figures do not provide a verified electricity-rate scenario or a comparable gasoline F-150 baseline, so there is no defensible universal savings number to apply to every buyer.
How to estimate your own cost instead of copying an average
- Start with the actual transaction price. Include dealer fees, taxes, registration and any incentive that truly applies to your location and eligibility.
- Model depreciation separately. Use a conservative resale value for your planned ownership period and mileage; do not treat an online estimate as guaranteed.
- Get an insurance quote. Obtain a quote for the exact VIN or configuration, coverage limits and garaging address.
- Calculate electricity. Multiply expected kilowatt-hours by your local rate, then account for the share of charging done at home, at public stations or during time-of-use periods.
- Budget tires and routine service. The Edmunds maintenance estimate is a model input, not a promise that your tire wear or inspection costs will match it.
- Separate covered and uncovered risk. Check how much high-voltage warranty remains and keep a reserve for electronics, collision damage, towing and downtime.
Used-buying checklist
- VIN and recall status: verify open and completed campaigns, especially 25S18/25V131 where applicable.
- Battery documentation: obtain module, array or pack repair invoices and any capacity-related diagnostic records.
- Warranty eligibility: confirm the original in-service date, mileage, transfer terms and remaining battery coverage.
- Service history: review dealer and independent-shop records for software, charging, electronics and high-voltage work.
- Functional test: test charging, displays, cameras, driver-assistance alerts, climate controls, audio and connected features.
- Charging plan: verify home electrical capacity, equipment condition and local electricity rates before purchase.
- Use-case fit: compare battery configuration, payload and towing needs with your routes. The available evidence does not quantify towing-related range loss, so do not rely on a generic range assumption.
- Independent inspection: have a qualified technician inspect the truck and review stored diagnostic information before money changes hands.
How to compare a Lightning with another truck or model year
Use the same checklist for every candidate rather than comparing advertised range or a single reliability headline. Put these items side by side:
| Comparison axis | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Model year, trim and battery configuration | Reliability evidence, equipment and remaining warranty can differ by year and configuration. |
| Original warranty start date and mileage | Two trucks of the same model year may have different coverage remaining. |
| VIN-specific recalls and repair proof | Only the VIN confirms applicability and remedy completion. |
| Purchase price and depreciation outlook | Depreciation dominates the modeled five-year cost. |
| Home charging and local electricity rate | Electricity cost depends on where and when you charge. |
| Insurance and financing quotes | These local variables can materially change total ownership cost. |
| Towing, payload and route conditions | Your actual workload may matter more than a brochure range figure; towing-related range loss is not quantified here. |
Bottom line
The F-150 Lightning is best described as conditionally reliable: the evidence ranges from an about-average 2025 forecast to earlier owner reports of battery-module and electronics problems, while a documented battery recall makes VIN verification essential for certain 2022–2024 trucks. A well-documented truck with completed recalls, functioning electronics and substantial battery warranty remaining can be a reasonable ownership proposition. A truck with unclear history, an open battery recall or little warranty left deserves a lower price—or a pass—because depreciation and an uncommon high-voltage or electronics repair can outweigh routine-cost averages.
