What Tesla says about the Cybertruck’s exterior
Tesla describes the Cybertruck’s HFS stainless-steel exterior as having impact resistance and being able to resist penetration from some forms of small-arms fire. The statement does not specify the ammunition, number of impacts, firing distance, angle, or a certified ballistic level. It is a manufacturer claim, not an independent certification.

That wording is narrower than a general promise that a Cybertruck can stop bullets. Ballistic resistance depends on the particular projectile and conditions: the National Institute of Justice notes that bullet composition, shape, caliber, mass, impact angle, and velocity all affect the threat. A result involving one round cannot be generalized to every cartridge or bullet design of the same caliber. NIJ’s explanation of ballistic-resistant armor concerns body armor and helps explain why a precise threat definition matters; it is not a Cybertruck rating.
What Musk claimed at the 2023 launch
At the Cybertruck production event on November 30, 2023, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, “It is literally bulletproof to a 9mm handgun.” That is a historical launch claim—not a verified protection level or a published certification result. The event transcript also records Musk saying the glass “Seems like a vulnerability.”

The launch statement and Tesla’s current product wording are not interchangeable: Musk specified a 9 mm handgun at the event, while Tesla’s cited description now says “some forms of small-arms fire” without listing a test protocol or level. Neither establishes that every stock Cybertruck—or every part of one—will stop a 9 mm round under all conditions.
Are the Cybertruck’s windows bulletproof?
The cited body-panel claim does not establish ballistic resistance for the windows. Musk’s launch-event remark acknowledged glass as a possible vulnerability, and MotorTrend likewise cautioned that occupants could remain exposed through the glass. MotorTrend’s analysis also notes that the cited claim does not provide an armor certification.

Protection of a vehicle is a system question: body panels, glazing, seams, doors, and other openings cannot be treated as equivalent just because one exterior material is said to resist some impacts. The sources cited here do not document whole-vehicle ballistic testing or establish that the stock windows are ballistic-resistant.
Is there a certified ballistic rating for the stock Cybertruck?
The cited Tesla statement and the sources discussed here do not establish a certified ballistic rating for the stock Cybertruck. NIJ standards referenced in public guidance address body armor, not a vehicle certification, so they should not be presented as a Cybertruck rating.

Standardized testing is more specific than an unspecified demonstration. NIST’s body-armor explainer describes conditioned samples, calibrated clay backing, and multiple impacts under controlled conditions. Its page, updated in 2025, says the body-armor method includes 12 shots and a maximum clay deformation of 44 mm. Those figures describe that body-armor test method—not Cybertruck performance. NIST’s body-armor testing explainer illustrates why test conditions and scope matter, but does not show that the truck underwent that procedure.
Why crash ratings do not answer the bulletproof question
Crashworthiness tests evaluate how a vehicle performs in specified collisions. They do not measure resistance to gunfire. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s ratings are tied to particular model years and build periods, and they are not evidence of ballistic protection. IIHS’s Cybertruck ratings page covers crash safety, a separate test domain.

What to ask about a Cybertruck armor retrofit
The sources here do not validate a specific aftermarket Cybertruck armoring service. If protection is needed for a real threat environment, consult a qualified vehicle-armoring provider and ask for documentation specific to the vehicle and build. Useful evidence includes:
- The ammunition type, projectile construction, and impact velocity used in testing.
- The number and placement of impacts, plus the tested angles and other conditions.
- Whether glazing and other openings are included in the protection claim.
- The test standard or independent laboratory behind the results.
- Compatibility with the exact Cybertruck model and build, and the protection limits the installer states.
Without vehicle-specific test documentation, do not assume a generic armor product or an exterior-panel claim makes a stock Cybertruck an armored vehicle.
