There is evidence that Lexus is deliberately moving away from over-styling, and at least one reviewer found the result too subdued on the LBX. That is a real tension, but it does not establish that Toyota is complacent about Lexus design—or that the whole range has lost its identity. The fairer reading is that Lexus is trying to make restraint feel distinctive, with mixed results in at least one production model.
Why the question has returned
Lexus has built recognition around expressive styling, including the spindle grille, but a calmer design can invite a different question: has the brand become more mature, or simply less memorable? The two possibilities can look similar in a showroom. Smooth surfaces and fewer dramatic details may help a car feel cohesive over time; they can also make it harder to stand out at first glance.
This is not a new concern inside Toyota. In its 2025 Integrated Report, Toyota looks back to criticism that Lexus was “boring” roughly 14 years earlier and connects the company’s broader response with a shift away from prioritizing scale and profits toward making better products. What Lexus says it is trying to do
In a 2023 interview with Car Design News, Toyota and Lexus design head Simon Humphries described an intentional pullback from excess: “I’m trying to get away from over-styling, get back to basics and ask what’s fundamentally necessary.” The statement points to a design philosophy, not a lack of ambition. Lexus’s own design principles are Seamless Anticipation, Incisive Simplicity, and Intriguing Elegance. The company says its spindle grille remains an instantly recognizable signature, while its treatment evolves across models and over time. Its stated aim is that “Everything we create must be an intuitive pleasure to use and behold.” These principles explain the brand’s intended balance; as manufacturer self-description, they cannot by themselves show how well each car achieves it. The LBX shows the risk of restraint
The LBX is a useful case study because it demonstrates how the same design choice can be read differently. Le Monde’s 2024 review judged the exterior too smooth and less eye-catching after Lexus moved away from more radical styling, while finding the cabin more successful. That is one publication’s assessment, not a consensus among reviewers or buyers. The LBX should not stand in for every Lexus. Lexus UK presents the LBX, LM, and GX as distinct propositions for different market segments, which suggests the range does not have a single design brief. Are Lexus cars losing their identity—or becoming too much like Toyotas?
The available evidence does not establish that newer Lexus models as a group look too much like Toyota models. Lexus’s own design language still claims identifiable cues, especially the spindle grille, though a recognizable element is not enough on its own to make every model distinctive. A convincing comparison would need to look at current Lexus and Toyota production vehicles side by side, model by model, rather than infer a range-wide pattern from one review or a design statement.

Sales figures do not settle the design question either. Lexus reported global sales exceeding 851,000 in 2024, including 88,184 in Europe, while Toyota Motor Europe reported 1.217 million vehicles sold that year. Those figures describe sales performance, not whether customers find Lexus styling distinctive or whether designers are taking risks. They should not be treated as proof for or against complacency. What the “Discover” direction and LFA Concept suggest
At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Lexus announced a “Discover” brand direction. Toyota Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries described Lexus as having room to strengthen its mainstream-luxury promise and “think independently, confidently; to be adventurous and innovative.” The announcement positions Lexus as a brand that wants to question conventional ideas of luxury and extend beyond cars into products, services, experiences, and lifestyles. The LFA Concept offers a more focused expression of ambition. Toyota describes it as a battery-electric sports-car concept, developed alongside the GR GT and GR GT3, with priorities including a low centre of gravity, low weight with high rigidity, aerodynamic performance, and driver immersion. It shows Lexus presenting a bold design idea, but a concept is not a production vehicle and cannot demonstrate that the direction has reached the showroom. Toyota: Lexus LFA Concept BEV sports car

Not on the evidence available here. The clearer conclusion is that Lexus is consciously trying to reduce over-styling while preserving an identity built around its own design cues. That approach can read as confident restraint, but the LBX review shows how it can also feel too timid. The evidence supports a debate about execution—not a claim that Toyota has stopped trying, nor a verdict on every Lexus in the range.

To judge the direction more firmly, compare production models across the current Lexus lineup and their closest Toyota counterparts. Look for differences in proportions, surface treatment, detailing, and the overall impression each car makes—not just whether both wear a recognizable grille. Concepts and brand statements can signal intent; production cars are where that intent has to work.
