It can be—but a C4 Corvette is a bargain only when the car’s year, condition, equipment, and service history justify its price. The generation runs from 1984 through 1996, and its engines range from the 205-hp 1984 L83 to the 330-hp 1996 LT4. A clean, well-documented example may offer compelling performance for the money; a cheap car with neglected maintenance can quickly change the equation.
What counts as a C4 Corvette?
The C4 is the fourth-generation Chevrolet Corvette, covering model years 1984–1996. There was no retail 1983 Corvette model year between the C3 and C4. Because the generation lasted 13 model years, “C4” describes a broad range of cars rather than one fixed performance or ownership proposition.
Engine, transmission, body style, cabin equipment, and special editions all changed over the run. Confirm a car’s actual configuration and condition rather than relying only on a seller’s trim description.
How C4 engines and performance changed
| Model years | Engine and cited output | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1984 | 350-cubic-inch L83 Cross-Fire Injection V8; 205 hp | The first C4’s engine differs substantially from later standard engines. |
| 1985–1991 | L98 V8 with tuned-port injection; 230 hp at introduction in 1985 | The L98 arrived for 1985. Verify equipment and condition on the specific car. |
| 1990–1995 ZR-1 | Lotus-designed, 32-valve, four-cam LT5 V8; 375 hp initially and 405 hp for 1993 | The ZR-1 is mechanically distinct from ordinary L98 and LT1 cars, with different service needs. |
| 1992–1996 standard-engine cars | LT1 V8; 300 hp when it became the base engine in 1992 | LT1 cars warrant specific attention to Opti-Spark service history. |
| 1996 LT4-equipped cars | LT4 V8; 330 hp | The LT4 was optional and available only with the six-speed manual. |
These are historical factory specifications, not claims about the output of an individual car, which may have been modified or may need repair. Other notable changes include the return of the convertible for 1986, the six-speed ZF manual replacing the earlier 4+3 unit for 1989, and a revised cabin for 1990.

What does a C4 Corvette cost?
There is no single dependable price for every C4. One dated reference point is Hagerty’s September 30, 2025 valuation report for a 1984 Corvette: it lists $32,900 for concours, $19,400 for excellent, $8,700 for good, and $4,500 for fair condition. Those figures apply to that model year and those condition tiers; they are not a live quote or a price guarantee for other C4s. Hagerty also says its displayed values draw on multiple data sources and do not indicate the amount of insurance coverage. Read Hagerty’s 1984 Corvette valuation report.
MotorTrend’s November 2, 2020 overview described early C4 examples as costing less than $10,000 in good condition at that time. That is useful historical context for the generation’s budget-car reputation, not a current 2026 asking-price guide. Read MotorTrend’s C4 buyer’s guide. Compare cars by year, equipment, condition, and documented work; do not use an older range or one model year’s valuation as a generation-wide market price.

Which C4 is the right kind of bargain?
Choose the car that fits your priorities
- For a straightforward entry into the generation: Compare standard-engine cars by condition and records. A lower asking price matters less than evidence that the car has been maintained.
- For the LT1-era performance: Consider 1992–1996 cars, but factor Opti-Spark inspection and service history into the evaluation.
- For maximum rarity and performance: The ZR-1’s LT5 and the 1996 LT4 Grand Sport are distinctive options, not interchangeable with a standard C4. A ZR-1’s separate engine design can mean more complex service needs.
Special trim alone does not establish value. Verify identity, equipment, condition, and records before paying a premium, especially for a ZR-1 or Grand Sport.
What to inspect before buying
Ask about LT1 Opti-Spark service
On 1992–1996 LT1 cars, ask when the Opti-Spark ignition was serviced and whether the car has the later vented design. The buyer guide identifies 1992–1994 units as more vulnerable. A rough idle or misfire calls for diagnosis; it does not prove that Opti-Spark is the cause. See the CorvSport C4 buyer’s guide.

Check the instruments and controls
Test the dashboard readouts, buttons, and switches. C4 instrument clusters can have failed digital display segments or fading display film, so check that the displays are legible and behave consistently. See the VetteFacts C4 buyer’s guide.
Verify cooling operation and look for leaks
Let the engine warm up and confirm the cooling fans operate. Inspect for coolant leaks and signs of contaminated coolant. These checks can reveal concerns that merit a mechanic’s diagnosis; they are not a diagnosis by themselves.

Match the car to its records
Review maintenance documentation and compare it with the car’s condition and equipment. If you cannot assess the car confidently, arrange a specialist inspection before committing. Make any price comparison specific to the year, configuration, condition, and recent maintenance evidence.

- Identify the exact car. Confirm model year, engine, transmission, body style, and special-model status.
- Inspect the likely trouble points. For LT1 cars, investigate Opti-Spark history; on all examples, test the instruments and controls and check cooling operation and for leaks.
- Weigh documentation against condition. A low price without credible service history is not the same value as a comparable car with substantiated maintenance.
- Use valuation evidence carefully. Keep each figure tied to its model year, condition tier, source, and date. Treat historical ranges as historical, not current quotes.
- Account for mechanical complexity. A ZR-1’s LT5 is a different ownership proposition from a standard-engine C4, so assess its service records and specialist support accordingly.
The C4 can deliver substantial performance at a modest used-car outlay, but the generation’s variety makes careful comparison essential. Its best bargain is the particular example whose condition and documented upkeep make sense for its price.
