The countdown to McLaren’s P1 successor has already ended: McLaren named the W1 and announced its reveal for 6 October 2024. In 2026, a separate McLaren programme is drawing attention to the brand’s return to endurance racing, but the MCL-HY is not a successor road car.
McLaren’s P1 successor is the W1
McLaren’s official W1 page described the car as the newest model in the “1” lineage, succeeding both the F1 and the P1, and announced a reveal at 13:00 BST on 6 October 2024. That date has passed; the announcement is no longer a future countdown. The source is McLaren Automotive’s W1 page.
The W1 belongs to McLaren’s road-car story. The F1 and P1 are its predecessors in the marque’s “1” lineage; the W1 is the named next car in that sequence. The official source available for this account does not support a detailed specification comparison, so figures for power, weight, acceleration or price should not be inferred here.
The MCL-HY is a different McLaren project
On 4 May 2026, McLaren Racing revealed the MCL-HY, a competition car planned for McLaren’s 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is an endurance-racing Hypercar, not the P1’s road-car successor. McLaren Racing’s announcement is available at The McLaren MCL-HY; the FIA also reported the reveal at WEC: McLaren reveals its 2027 Hypercar challenger.

The MCL-HY programme also gives McLaren Racing a route into the Triple Crown narrative: CEO Zak Brown said the team, partners and fans could challenge together for the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. That ambition concerns the racing programme, not the W1’s position as a road car.
