Yes—Chevrolet made an all-electric version called the Spark EV. But not every Chevrolet Spark is electric: the Spark name was also used for gasoline-powered cars. Check the exact variant before assuming how a particular car is powered.
What is the difference between the Spark and Spark EV?
The Spark EV is a battery-electric car powered by a lithium-ion high-voltage battery pack, as Chevrolet describes in its 2015 Spark EV guide. It needs to be plugged in to charge. “Spark” on its own is not enough to identify the powertrain: Chevrolet also sold gasoline-powered Spark models. A secondary model-history overview distinguishes the 2016–2022 Spark from the Spark EV, but Chevrolet’s official materials cited here do not provide a complete history of every gasoline Spark powertrain. What years was the Spark EV made?
Chevrolet’s parts catalog lists the Spark EV for model years 2014, 2015, and 2016. Chevrolet’s current page identifies Spark as discontinued, but does not state the EV’s final model year; the 2014–2016 range comes from the parts catalog rather than that discontinuation page. How far could a Spark EV travel, and how long did charging take?
GM’s 2013 comparison material gives the 2014 Spark EV an EPA-estimated maximum range of 82 miles. That is a historical estimate for that model, not a prediction of the range of a used car today. Chevrolet’s 2015 guide gives approximate charging times of seven hours at a 240-volt charging station and 20 hours from a 120-volt standard outlet at the stated 12-amp setting. The guide cautions that charging time varies with outside temperature. These are approximate figures from the guide, not guaranteed times for every charging setup or vehicle.
What should you check before buying a used Spark EV?
Get the high-voltage battery checked
Do not judge battery health from the model name or the original range estimate. Chevrolet’s 2016 owner’s manual says inspection, testing, and replacement of the high-voltage battery should be handled by a trained service technician with appropriate knowledge and tools. Chevrolet’s warranty materials make coverage subject to terms, mileage, and time; they do not establish coverage for an individual used Spark EV. Consider service history and charging behavior
Ask about maintenance and charging-related service records, and have a qualified technician assess the car rather than relying only on a dashboard range estimate. Temperature affects charging and battery operation, so a displayed range can vary with conditions as well as battery condition.

- Look for the full model designation, “Spark EV,” in vehicle documentation and records rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand.
- Confirm the vehicle’s year and identity using its VIN and relevant records.
