In a GOBankingRates article published October 25, 2025, auto mechanic and JustAnswer expert Chris Pyle cited repair costs, transmission concerns, insurance and depreciation as reasons he would avoid certain vehicles or categories. The list ranges from broad labels such as “small SUVs” to specific models, and it does not provide a complete model-year reliability analysis.
Use the cautions below as prompts to investigate a specific vehicle’s year, powertrain, condition and price—not as proof that every example is a bad buy.
What the nine cautions actually cover
The list is not nine equally precise model recommendations. Some entries name a particular model; others refer to wide categories with no makes, years or powertrains specified. Pyle’s comments were reported by GOBankingRates, not presented as a model-by-model reliability study.
1. Tesla: potential expense after a major failure
Pyle’s concern is the cost of ownership if a motor or battery fails. He was quoted as saying, “The reasons are the cost of ownership once a motor or battery fails, and the repair cost is far more than the vehicle value.” That is a warning about a potentially severe repair, not evidence that every Tesla will need such work.

The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
GOBankingRates also cited figures attributed to Dash Lewis: average Tesla repair costs of $5,552 over ownership and $1,078 more in lifetime repair costs than other EVs. The article does not state when those estimates were published or establish that they apply to a particular model, year or owner.
2. Rivian: collision repair and insurance costs
Pyle warned that collision repairs and insurance can be expensive, saying, “The high cost of collision repairs and collision insurance can often be a car payment in itself.” The article recounts one owner’s repair episode in which a final bill exceeded $42,000 after an initial insurance estimate of about $1,600. That is an individual account, not a typical repair-cost estimate or a prediction of what a Rivian owner will pay.
3. New trucks: a depreciation and purchase-price concern
Pyle’s criticism applies broadly to new trucks, not a named make or model. He called light-duty through heavy-duty models “way overpriced” and estimated that vehicles priced from $30,000 to $50,000 could lose 35% to 55% of their value over five years. The estimate’s year and calculation method are not stated, so it should not be treated as a current forecast for every new truck.

GOBankingRates also relayed a CarEdge estimate for a Ford F-350 Super Duty: 36% depreciation over five years and a resale value of nearly $49,000, assuming an original selling price of $76,350. The estimate year is not stated. A specific truck’s depreciation depends on its configuration, condition, market and purchase price.
4. Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X: repair-frequency concerns
Pyle cited repair frequency as a concern for the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500/500X. The article gives Edmunds value scores—not reliability scores—of 6/10 for the 2023 Jeep Renegade and 7/10 for the 2023 Fiat 500X. It does not state the rating year. Those scores do not establish that either vehicle is unreliable, and the cited 500X score should not be generalized to every Fiat 500.
5. Ford Fiesta: PowerShift transmission concerns
Pyle flagged the Fiesta’s PowerShift dual-clutch transmission, with the article referring to lawsuits and owner complaints. It does not establish that all Fiesta model years or versions share the same problem. A shopper should identify the exact year and transmission, then review its service history and applicable recall or campaign information before deciding.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
6. Nissan cars: a broad CVT warning
Pyle criticized continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) in Nissan cars. The article refers to complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involving various Nissan models from 2013 through 2018, but it does not name those models or establish the status or outcome of the complaints. “Nissan cars” is too broad to decide whether a particular used vehicle is a poor choice.
7. Small SUVs: another broad CVT warning
Pyle also criticized CVTs in small SUVs without specifying makes, models or years. The category is not a reliable shortcut for evaluating an individual vehicle: identify the actual powertrain and check the evidence for that model year rather than assuming every small SUV uses the same transmission or has the same risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems8. Jeep Grand Cherokee: repair costs and parts failures
Pyle cited high repair costs and premature parts failures. GOBankingRates relayed a RepairPal rating of 3.5/5 and a rank of 15th among 26 midsize SUVs, attributed through Lisa Conant at carparts.com. The article does not specify the rating year or model-year applicability, so the rating is not a precise forecast for a particular Grand Cherokee.

9. The ninth entry is a category, not another named model
The list’s remaining entry is the broad warning about small SUVs and CVTs described above. Because the source mixes specific models and general categories, its count of nine should not be mistaken for nine individually assessed vehicles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate a specific used car
A category-level warning only becomes useful when it leads to checks on the vehicle you are actually considering. Start with the exact model year and powertrain, then weigh likely repair exposure against the asking price and your needs.
- Confirm the configuration. Record the model year, engine and transmission; a nameplate alone may cover materially different versions.
- Review the vehicle’s records. Ask for maintenance and repair documentation, and check whether recalls or other manufacturer actions apply to that exact vehicle.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a mechanic assess the vehicle before purchase, with attention to the powertrain and any symptoms or repair history relevant to that model.
- Price the ownership risks. Compare the asking price with condition and likely repair exposure; check insurance costs and whether qualified repair shops and parts are accessible where you live.
- Compare alternatives on the same terms. Consider expected repair costs, year- and powertrain-specific reliability evidence, depreciation, insurance, service access and how well each candidate fits your intended use.
An OBD-II scanner can read diagnostic trouble codes on many vehicles, but a code scan cannot reveal a car’s full mechanical condition or replace an independent inspection.

This car obd2 scanner diagnostic tool is equipped with I/M readiness function to check the operations of the e-m-issi0n system on OBD2 compliant vehicles, run I/M monitor readiness test, checking if the pass vehicle s-m-0-g inspection.
How much weight to give the list
The figures in the GOBankingRates article are claims it reports or relays, and several lack an estimate or rating year. They are useful context for the concerns Pyle raised, not independently verified current averages. The article does not compare the vehicles with named alternatives, so it cannot establish which replacement is better or rank the entries by risk.
The most defensible takeaway is to investigate the individual vehicle. Model year, powertrain, maintenance, condition, recall status, local repair access and the price you will pay can all change the decision. A mechanic’s caution is a reason to ask better questions—not proof that every example is defective or not worth buying.
