BMW announced a 2014 U.S. starting MSRP of $135,700 before destination and handling; Cars.com’s October 8, 2026 snapshot showed a nationwide average asking price of $55,024 and listings starting at $29,995. Those are asking prices, not sale prices, and they say nothing about the condition or eventual costs of a particular car.
The i8 is also more than an exotic-looking bargain: it is a discontinued plug-in hybrid with an unusual two-axle powertrain and carbon-fiber-reinforced passenger cell. Understanding its technology—and checking the specific car carefully—matters as much as comparing sticker prices.
Why the BMW i8 still stands out
The i8 combined features more commonly associated with separate categories: plug-in-hybrid driving, sports-car performance, lightweight construction and dramatic styling. BMW describes a carbon-fiber-reinforced passenger cell and upward-opening doors. Its defining engineering choice is the division of propulsion across the axles: an electric motor drives the front wheels, while a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine drives the rear wheels.
That layout lets the i8 operate as a plug-in hybrid with electric-only driving capability and gasoline range. When both power sources are working, the car can deliver all-wheel-drive capability. It is not a battery-electric car, and its gasoline engine means it can be driven without first charging the battery.

Is the BMW i8 fully electric, and can you drive it without charging?
No. BMW identifies the Coupe and Roadster as plug-in-hybrid sports cars with an electric motor and a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine. The electric motor is at the front and the gasoline engine at the rear. BMW says the gasoline engine allows the i8 to be driven without an electric charge. Charging is needed to make use of plug-in electric driving; it is not a prerequisite for every trip.
How the i8 changed over its production run
BMW’s global i-series overview gives the i8 a 2013–2020 production period and says 20,500 were built. BMW’s U.S. legacy page labels its i8 models 2014–2020. These dates use different frames—global production period versus U.S. model-year span—rather than conflicting claims about the car’s availability.

| Version or figure | What BMW states |
|---|---|
| Earlier system output | 266 kW (362 hp), according to BMW’s i-series overview. |
| Updated system output | Up to 275 kW (374 hp), according to BMW’s i-series overview. BMW’s historical account associates the update with the Roadster-era changes. |
| Updated battery | 11.6 kWh gross energy content, according to BMW Group’s 2020 historical account. |
| Electric range | Up to 55 km NEDC for the Coupe, according to BMW’s i-series overview. This is a homologation-cycle figure, not a promise of real-world range or a direct comparison with EPA or WLTP results. |
| Launch acceleration claim | BMW’s 2013 U.S. announcement gave 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds for the launch specification; do not apply that figure automatically to every year and body style. |
BMW says the Roadster arrived in 2018 and that the later update increased battery gross energy content, raised electric-motor peak output and brought combined output to 374 hp. Do not assume those later specifications apply to an earlier example; confirm the model year, body style and equipment of the car being considered.
Are the BMW i8 Coupe and Roadster discontinued?
Yes. BMW’s U.S. legacy page confirms that both body styles are no longer in production. BMW Group says production ended in 2020, after a worldwide run it describes as spanning 2013–2020. That makes condition, parts and service questions about the individual used car more relevant than expectations based on a new-car warranty or current production support.

How much does a used BMW i8 cost?
The original and used figures show a substantial gap at the nominal price level, but they are not an apples-to-apples measure of ownership cost. BMW Group’s 2013 U.S. announcement set the 2014 i8 MSRP at $135,700 plus destination and handling. It is not inflation-adjusted. The following marketplace figures are U.S.-dollar asking-price snapshots, not audited sale prices:
| Marketplace figure | Publisher and date | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| $55,024 average; listings from $29,995 | Cars.com, accessed October 8, 2026 | Nationwide average asking price and advertised starting price on a dynamic listings page. |
| About $46,500 average | CarGurus, page crawled in late September 2026 | A separate marketplace average listing price. |
The averages differ because they come from separate marketplace calculations and snapshots; they should not be blended into one definitive market value. Actual asking prices vary with mileage, features, history, location and condition. Neither marketplace figure establishes what a buyer will pay, and neither demonstrates that repairs, insurance or ownership overall are affordable.

What to check before buying a used i8
The car’s unusual architecture makes a low asking price only one part of the decision. The manufacturer specifications and marketplace listings do not establish the condition, battery health, repair cost or warranty status of any particular i8. Treat these as car-specific checks, not as evidence that every i8 has a particular defect or ownership cost.
- Match the exact car to its specifications. Confirm model year and whether it is a Coupe or Roadster; battery and output figures changed during the run.
- Review records and history. Request service documentation and check the vehicle history, including any structural or body repairs.
- Clarify warranty coverage. Ask for the applicable warranty terms and determine whether high-voltage components remain covered.
- Arrange a qualified inspection. Use a BMW or hybrid specialist equipped to assess the i8’s hybrid systems and carbon-fiber-reinforced structure.
- Verify charging details. Confirm the included charging equipment and connector compatibility for that specific car and market.
- Work out the full ownership picture. Check insurance, taxes, financing, service access and parts availability for your location rather than inferring them from the purchase price.
What “affordable” means for the i8
The i8 is affordable only in a relative, purchase-price sense: used asking prices in the cited U.S. listings are well below the car’s announced 2014 MSRP at its original nominal price. The available figures do not prove a low total cost of ownership, and they cannot tell you whether a particular example is a sound buy. The technology is genuinely distinctive; the financial case depends on the exact car and a careful inspection.
