BMW sells the electric i4 alongside the gasoline 4 Series Gran Coupé, but the published examples show the i4 priced higher than the entry gasoline car. Are the BMW i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupé the same car?
They are closely related Gran Coupé model lines with similar styling and four-door liftback packaging, but they are not identical versions of one car. The i4 uses an all-electric powertrain and is sold in i4-specific trims; the 4 Series Gran Coupé uses gasoline engines and its own trim range. BMW presents them in parallel, rather than stating that every i4 and every 4 Series Gran Coupé is equivalent.

The German figures describe the refreshed models scheduled to begin production in July 2024, not current 2026 prices. The UK release separately lists UK pricing while noting that technical figures refer to the German-market offering. BMW USA warns that displayed MSRP may not equal a dealer’s sale price and that range varies with conditions and equipment.

Where could the $4,400 claim come from?
The evidence available here does not identify the market, currency conversion, model year, trim, options, taxes or incentives behind that number. It may reflect a particular promotion, lease calculation, incentive package or a comparison of non-equivalent versions, but treating it as a general BMW i4 discount would be inaccurate. A valid article or buying decision should trace the figure to a specific dated offer and reproduce its assumptions.
How much more does an electric BMW i4 cost?
Using BMW’s 2024 German examples, the i4 eDrive35 was €4,600 above the 420i Gran Coupé before considering whether their equipment and specifications matched. In the UK examples, the gap was £6,535 in listed RRP. Neither result is a universal premium: prices vary by country, tax treatment, model year, inventory and trim.

The UK release gives the i4 eDrive35 286 hp, a 0–62 mph time of 6.0 seconds and 240–311 miles of WLTP range. The listed 420i has 184 hp and a 7.9-second 0–62 mph time. Those are manufacturer figures for the UK offering, not proof that the two cars have equal equipment or performance value.

Possibly, but that is a total-cost question rather than an up-front-price claim. BMW USA says an EV comparison should include purchase price, running costs, maintenance and incentives. For a defensible calculation, use the same ownership period and driving distance, local electricity and gasoline prices, charging mix, real-world energy or fuel consumption, scheduled maintenance assumptions, incentives, financing and expected resale value.

- Purchase: compare matched trims with identical destination charges, taxes and equipment.
- Energy: calculate home, workplace and public charging separately instead of assuming one electricity rate.
- Maintenance: include the services required by each model and the cost of tires, brakes and other wear items.

A lower operating cost can eventually offset a higher sticker price, but it does not turn the i4 into a vehicle that was demonstrably $4,400 cheaper at purchase.
How to make a fair i4-versus-4 Series comparison
- Fix the market and date. State the country, currency and model year; do not mix German, UK and US figures.
- Match the trims. Compare the closest available i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupé versions, then list differences in power, drivetrain, wheels, driver assistance and standard equipment.
- Use real transaction inputs. Separate MSRP or RRP from destination charges, taxes, dealer discounts and manufacturer incentives.
- Separate performance from cost. Report acceleration, power, WLTP or EPA efficiency and range with the test standard and market attached.
- Model ownership. Enter annual miles or kilometres, energy prices, charging access, maintenance, financing and resale assumptions.
- Show sensitivity. Test what happens if public charging is more expensive, fuel prices fall, mileage changes or an incentive expires.
What buyers should conclude
The i4 is not established as a universally cheaper version of the 4 Series Gran Coupé. Official examples from Germany and the UK instead put the cited electric trim above the cited entry gasoline trim, while the US information provides no matched gas price. The defensible conclusion is that the $4,400 headline is unverified; whether an i4 saves money depends on a market-specific purchase and ownership calculation.
