Why older 2026 price figures may be lower
Toyota’s 2025 launch announcements listed lower starting prices than the current model pages. At launch, the company stated $45,270 for the gas Highlander XLE and $47,020 for the Highlander Hybrid XLE, excluding Dealer Processing and Handling. Its Grand Highlander launch announcement listed $41,360 for gas LE FWD and $44,710 for Hybrid LE. Those are historical launch figures, not the current October 2026 base MSRPs above. Price is only one part of the comparison
Match the grade, powertrain and drivetrain
An XLE-to-XLE comparison is useful for matching trim names, but it does not establish identical equipment. Check the equipment included on the specific vehicles. Also match powertrain and drivetrain: Highlander offers gas and hybrid versions, while Grand Highlander offers gas, hybrid and Hybrid MAX configurations. Toyota’s 2025 announcements describe standard AWD for 2026 Highlander gas and hybrid grades, while Grand Highlander availability varies by configuration, with FWD offered on certain gas and hybrid grades and AWD depending on the model. Confirm the drivetrain on the quote rather than comparing similarly named trims alone.

Toyota lists up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity for Highlander with the second and third rows folded, compared with up to 97.5 cubic feet for Grand Highlander with rear seats folded. Toyota’s 2025 announcements for the 2026 models estimated 24 mpg combined for gas Highlander and 35 mpg combined for Highlander Hybrid. For Grand Highlander, Toyota listed up to 28 mpg combined for gas, up to 36 mpg combined for hybrid and 27 mpg combined for Hybrid MAX. Toyota lists towing of up to 5,000 pounds for gas Highlander models and 3,500 pounds for hybrids. These are manufacturer estimates or specifications, not independent test results; figures vary by configuration, so verify the exact vehicle’s details.
