Musk discussed a different issue in a May 2025 interview: restrictions on using video recorded in China to train Tesla’s system for that market. That statement does not identify his personal driving as training data.
What did Musk say about Tesla’s training data in China?
In a May 20, 2025 CNBC interview, Musk said Tesla’s China self-driving release had been trained on video from the rest of the world, rather than video from China, because the company was not allowed to train on videos recorded there. The interview concerned the geography of training video for a China release; Musk did not say that his own driving was used as a training source or that he had ordered Tesla to use it. An unofficial transcript is available at Elon Musk Archive; the interview itself is the relevant source for verifying the statement.
Does that prove Tesla uses Musk’s personal driving?
No. A statement about where training video came from does not establish who was driving in that footage, whether footage of Musk exists in Tesla’s training set, or whether his driving behavior is used as a distinct example. The sources cited here provide no technical documentation, Tesla statement, or independently verified reporting that answers those questions. They also do not establish the headline’s claim that Musk is forcing Tesla to do this.
What do the sources establish about Tesla’s driver-assistance system?
FSD Beta was described as requiring constant driver supervision
A peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Psychology on February 23, 2023, reported 103 in-depth interviews with users of Tesla’s FSD Beta and standard Autopilot. The authors characterized FSD Beta at the time as a Level 2 partially automated system requiring constant supervision. They quoted Tesla’s instruction to participants: “Use Full Self-Driving Beta only if you will pay constant attention to the road, and be prepared to act immediately, especially around blind corners, crossing intersections, and in narrow driving situations.” The study’s interview findings included both complacency risks and stress from monitoring a system that might behave unsafely; they are qualitative results from that sample, not a crash-risk estimate or an audit of Tesla’s training data. NHTSA messaging concerns are a separate issue
The Associated Press reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Tesla to revisit public communications after agency officials saw conflicts between some Tesla-account posts and instructions requiring drivers to remain in control. AP also reported that the agency was investigating crashes involving FSD in low-visibility conditions. Those reports concern public messaging, supervision, and an investigation; they do not prove anything about Musk’s personal driving being used for training. An investigation is not itself a final finding about the underlying allegation. Read AP’s report.

How to separate the claims
- Training data: Musk’s May 2025 remark describes the geography of video used for a China release. It does not identify Musk’s personal driving as a data source.
- Automation capability: The 2023 study describes FSD Beta as Level 2 automation at that time, not a fully autonomous vehicle.
- Driver responsibility: The study’s quoted instructions call for constant attention, while AP reported NHTSA concerns about how some public messaging aligned with driver instructions.
