What happened at the Fremont factory?
Tesla’s 2020 impact report says the company started operations at its Fremont factory in 2010. Tesla described the facility as having been built more than 60 years earlier by established automakers, but that relative-age statement does not establish an exact construction year. The factory was previously associated with NUMMI, an automotive assembly joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. So the historical change was from a GM-Toyota venture’s Fremont plant to a factory operated by Tesla—not evidence that Musk personally bought or took legal ownership of the property.
Why was the NUMMI plant significant?
NUMMI was more than a former occupant of the site. A scholarly account describes the venture as an effort to strengthen American automotive assembly by learning Japanese production techniques. That context helps explain why the site’s history is often told as a succession of manufacturing approaches. NUMMI’s stated purpose included learning from Japanese production methods; Tesla’s documented milestone is that it began factory operations there in 2010. The available sources do not establish a quantitative performance comparison between the two eras.
What did the “10 years ago” anniversary mean?
On October 27, 2020, Tech Times reported anniversary wording attributed to a post by Viv (@flcnhvy): “Exactly 10 years ago today, Tesla opened its Fremont factory! GM & Toyota had abandoned the former NUMMI plant, but Tesla brought it back to life.” The article is secondary reporting of the post, rather than independent verification of the original social-media record.
