No evidence in the cited reporting shows that Tesla lost or concealed $1.4 billion. The headline figure came from comparing two different measures for the second half of 2024: capital expenditures and the increase in gross property, plant and equipment (PP&E). The Financial Times later revised its initial framing after considering additional accounting factors, but the remaining difference has not been definitively itemized.
Where did the $1.4 billion figure come from?
Fortune reported that Tesla recorded $6.3 billion in capital expenditures in the second half of 2024, while gross PP&E increased by $4.9 billion over the same period. Subtracting the latter from the former produces the initial apparent difference of $1.4 billion. Fortune’s account describes the figures and the Financial Times’ subsequent revision.

That arithmetic is a comparison, not proof that cash went missing. Capital expenditures track spending; gross PP&E is the recorded value of property and equipment before accumulated depreciation. Cash payments and changes in the asset balance can fall in different periods, and the balance can also change for reasons other than new purchases.

Fortune reported that the Financial Times revised its initial story after considering additional factors. Its account included $689 million in payments on PP&E liabilities—amounts owed for equipment purchased on credit—and an estimated $270 million associated with asset disposals. After those factors, Fortune described a residual apparent difference of $463 million.

The $270 million disposal estimate was based on changes in accumulated depreciation, according to Fortune’s account. It could be higher if disposed assets that were close to fully depreciated were included. These figures are part of the reported explanation, not a complete, definitive reconciliation of every dollar.
Why cash spending and gross PP&E do not necessarily match
Payment timing
A company can recognize or acquire equipment before paying the supplier. Paying down a liability later affects cash in that later period, even though the underlying asset purchase belongs to an earlier point in the accounting timeline. Fortune’s account of the FT update attributed $689 million in the period to payments on PP&E liabilities.
Asset disposals
Selling or retiring equipment can reduce gross PP&E, even when a company has also spent money on new assets. Fortune reported an estimated $270 million tied to disposals, with the estimate potentially higher if near-fully-depreciated assets were counted.
Foreign-currency translation
When the dollar value of assets held abroad is translated into U.S. dollars, exchange-rate movements can change their reported value without being a cash capital expenditure. Fortune reported that accounting professor and former EY audit partner Tim Morrison said, “Foreign currency can do lots of weird things,” and noted the difficulty of fully tracking the effect.
Other possible adjustments
Fortune also reported that non-material asset write-offs could help explain the residual. It did not assign them a definitive dollar amount. Currency movements and write-offs are possible contributors, not a published, item-by-item reconciliation of the $463 million.

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K includes PwC’s opinion that the company’s consolidated financial statements for 2025, 2024 and 2023 presented fairly, in all material respects, under U.S. GAAP. The auditor also said internal control over financial reporting was effective in all material respects as of December 31, 2025. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K provides that general audit context.
A clean audit opinion is relevant context, but it is not a public, line-by-line explanation of the second-half 2024 capex-to-PP&E comparison. Tesla’s June 2026 Form 10-Q says its interim statements are unaudited and should be read alongside its annual statements; it does not settle this specific comparison. Tesla’s June 2026 Form 10-Q provides the current interim-filing context.

What can be concluded
- The initial $1.4 billion figure was the difference between Fortune-reported capex of $6.3 billion and gross PP&E growth of $4.9 billion in the second half of 2024.
- The Financial Times later revised its initial framing; Fortune reported factors including $689 million in PP&E liability payments and an estimated $270 million related to disposals, leaving a $463 million apparent residual.
- The sources do not establish that Tesla lost or concealed $1.4 billion, nor do they provide a definitive itemized reconciliation of the residual.
