If Lando Norris and Max Verstappen finish the 2026 Formula One season level on championship points, the title will not be shared: the FIA will use a countback. It compares race wins first, then second places, then third places and subsequent finishing positions. Only if that race-result countback cannot separate them does the rule apply the same comparison to qualifying results.
How the FIA breaks a tie on championship points
The rule is in Article A2.1.4(c) of the FIA’s 2026 General Provisions. It awards the higher championship position to the driver who leads this sequence:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Race wins: the driver with more first-place finishes takes the higher position.
- Second places: if their win totals match, compare second-place finishes.
- Third places and onward: if second places also match, compare third places, then fourths and subsequent positions until one driver leads.
- Qualifying results: if the race-result countback still does not produce a result, apply the same criteria to qualifying results during the season.
The FIA’s regulations index listed Section A Issue 03, dated 25 June 2026, alongside Section B Issue 09, dated 1 October 2026. The rule’s location is Article A2.1.4(c); the available full text for that clause was Issue 02, so the latest Section A PDF should be consulted for exact current wording. See the FIA regulations index.
What that means for Norris and Verstappen
The comparison is sequential, not an overall tally of podiums or head-to-head results. If Norris has more race wins, he is ahead in the countback even if Verstappen has more second places. Second places matter only when the win totals are equal; third places matter only when wins and seconds are level, and so on.

- The UNO game players love races onto the scene with iconic images from the world of F1 racing and its celebrated drivers!
- Gameplay matches the classic card game where players match colors and numbers to get rid of all their cards!
- The special "Overtake" rule lets players add to a special pile -- but each card must be higher in value than the last or they'll have to draw the entire pile!
- Don't forget to yell "UNO!" when down to the last card!
- Designed for 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, the collectible card game makes a timeless gift for fans of F1 racing.
For example, if both drivers had the same number of wins but Norris had more second-place finishes, Norris would take the higher championship position. Their results at individual races do not override an earlier step in the prescribed sequence.
What counts—and what does not
The rule names race finishing positions and, as a fallback, qualifying results. It does not specify fastest laps, laps led, or a separate head-to-head record as tie-breakers. Nor does it identify sprint results as a distinct countback category. Avoid treating any of those as an extra step in the title-deciding sequence.

A tie between cars in an individual race classification is a different situation: the FIA provisions separately address the sharing of points or prizes for cars tied in an event. That does not mean drivers tied on season points share the championship; the championship tie is resolved under Article A2.1.4(c).
Why older descriptions of the rule may differ
Some earlier sporting-regulations wording described a discretionary FIA decision if the race countback failed. The 2026 Section A rule instead explicitly sends the process to qualifying results. For a 2026 title tie, the qualifying fallback is the relevant provision, not the older discretionary wording.

Does this mean Norris and Verstappen are currently tied?
No such conclusion follows from the rule explanation. An FIA classifications search extract displayed Norris on 128 points and Verstappen on 109, but the classifications page could not be opened to verify that these were complete standings at the time. A separate FIA document records the standings after the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March 2026: Norris had 10 points and Verstappen 8. Those figures are historical event standings, not a current-season snapshot. Check the FIA’s 2026 classifications for an authoritative live table when available.
