What Porsche has announced
Porsche’s 2026 strategy announcement identifies all-electric successors to the 718 Boxster and Cayman, and says they are expected to support sales in their first full production year in 2028. The company had also described a future two-door sports car in the 718 segment as part of its battery-electric vehicle offering in a 2025 strategy announcement.
Those statements establish the public roadmap: electric successors are planned. They do not establish that Porsche approved, then canceled, a production gasoline successor.
What happened to the current gas-powered 718?
Porsche says production of the existing 718 Boxster and Cayman series was discontinued in October 2025. The cars still appeared in delivery figures afterward: Porsche reported 18,612 deliveries in 2025, down 21.4% from 2024, and 2,789 in the first half of 2026, down 73.4% year over year. Deliveries are not the same as ongoing production; those figures do not mean the series remained in production after the stated end date.

Where the gas-successor story came from
In 2025, Autocar reported that Porsche was adapting the electric-first platform for petrol engines, citing unnamed senior engineering sources. That report is evidence that such engineering work was reported, but it does not confirm an approved production program or a launch plan.
Porsche’s current public strategy materials do not verify a gasoline-powered successor, give one a production date, or say that a formally confirmed combustion program was canceled. The distinction matters: a reported engineering possibility is not the same as a confirmed model, and the absence of a gas car from a public roadmap is not proof of a formal cancellation.

So, is the next Porsche 718 electric only?
The public plan is electric, but Porsche’s announcements do not settle every possible future product decision. Based on the current official record, buyers should not treat a gas-powered next-generation Cayman or Boxster as confirmed. Nor is it accurate to say Porsche has publicly confirmed canceling a gasoline successor: the sources reviewed do not establish that such a confirmed program existed.

Porsche’s stated expectation is that the all-electric Boxster and Cayman will support sales in their first full production year in 2028. That is the company’s timing expectation, not a guarantee of a specific on-sale date or delivery schedule.
