Neoen says construction has begun on Stage 1 of the Goyder North Wind Farm, a 346 MW project near Burra in South Australia. The stage is planned to include 48 Vestas turbines, with operation expected in 2029.
What is being built at Goyder North?
Stage 1 is the portion now entering construction: Neoen’s October 2026 update gives it a capacity of 346 MW and a planned turbine count of 48. The project is part of the wider Goyder Renewables Zone in South Australia’s Mid North, near Burra, on lands the project identifies as Ngadjuri Country. Who is building it, and how will it connect?
Neoen names Vestas as the wind farm contractor, including turbine supply, and Downer as the contractor for the overhead transmission line. The South Australian government identifies ElectraNet’s existing Bundey substation as the grid connection point. Neoen’s update and the government announcement provide those project details.
When is it expected to operate?
Neoen expects the wind farm to be operating in 2029, with crews expected on site from November 2026. These are the company’s announced schedule expectations, not confirmation of a completed commissioning date. Neoen’s October 2026 update sets out that timeline.

How does the BHP agreement fit?
Neoen has a 100 MW renewable energy baseload agreement with BHP for its South Australian mines, due to begin in July 2029. Neoen says supply will combine Goyder North generation with storage from Goyder Battery. This is a firmed supply arrangement; it does not mean wind from Goyder North alone will deliver a constant 100 MW or that a physical 100 MW flow will come directly from this wind farm at every moment. What are the local employment and accommodation estimates?
Neoen’s October 2026 update estimates around 500 jobs during construction and more than 10 ongoing operational roles. It also proposes temporary accommodation for approximately 300 workers across two locations, intended to reduce pressure on local housing. Those figures are estimates and a proposal, not realized job totals or completed accommodation. The update also says local supplier and jobseeker workshops are planned. Neoen’s project update contains these estimates and plans.

Why do some sources give larger capacity figures?
Goyder North’s wider planning history is not the same scope as the stage now being built. The current project page says the wider project received planning consent for up to 135 turbines and approximately 1,000 MW, but that it has since been refined and Stage 1 is 346 MW. A federal referral summary describes an earlier Stage 1 proposal of up to 92 turbines and approximately 600 MW, as well as a proposed battery and alternative transmission-line routes. Those older figures describe earlier design assumptions; they are not the current construction configuration. See the current project page and federal referral summary for the distinct scopes.
