Anand Mahindra shared a video of a Mahindra-branded auto-rickshaw on a UK road on October 5, 2026. The reported backstory: a hobbyist imported it. Online commenters joked that the sight amounted to “reverse colonisation”—a playful reaction, not a literal political claim.
What does the video show?
Reports by NDTV and The Economic Times describe a Mahindra-branded auto-rickshaw driving on a UK road. The Economic Times says Mahindra noted that a hobbyist had imported the vehicle. The reports do not identify the exact location in the UK or establish who owns it.
Mahindra posted the clip to X on October 5, 2026. He captioned it in Gujarati: “UK ma riksha aavi gai chhe… Mahindra ni chhe, aapda.” NDTV’s approximate translation is: “A rickshaw has arrived in the UK. It is Mahindra’s. It is ours.”
Why did commenters call it “reverse colonisation”?
The phrase came from online reactions, not Mahindra’s caption. Commenters treated the familiar Indian auto-rickshaw as an unexpected sight on a British road and joked about Indian ride culture appearing there. Some imagined the painted slogans and fare negotiations associated with auto rides. “Reverse colonisation” was a humorous framing of that contrast, not a claim that a political or historical event had occurred.

Which Mahindra model is it?
The contemporaneous reports identify it as a Mahindra auto-rickshaw or three-wheeler but do not confirm its model. LiveMint calls it “likely a Mahindra Treo,” a tentative identification that the other reports do not independently confirm. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a Mahindra-branded auto-rickshaw than to state that it is a Treo.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the clip establish that the vehicle is road-legal in the UK?
No. The reports establish that the clip showed the rickshaw on a UK road and that it was reportedly imported by a hobbyist. They do not establish its registration, roadworthiness, licensing status, or whether it was being driven under any particular legal arrangement. The footage alone cannot answer whether this specific vehicle was legally permitted on public roads.
