McLaren calls its 600W electric mountain bikes “the world’s most powerful trail-legal electric mountain bikes,” but that is a qualified manufacturer claim—not a current, independently verified global ranking. The full-suspension Extreme 600 is one of those models. Its published power and torque figures are striking, but legality depends on where and how the bike is configured.
What bike is McLaren talking about?
The Extreme 600 is McLaren’s full-suspension electric mountain bike. The brand also offers the Sport 600, a hardtail, as well as 250W versions of both platforms. BikeRadar described the Extreme as a 145mm-travel trail bike when it launched; that is launch-era reporting, not a current independent ride assessment. BikeRadar’s launch report covers the original range.

For readers comparing trail bikes, the distinction matters: the Extreme has rear suspension, while the Sport does not. The available specifications here do not establish a current head-to-head comparison of weight, suspension performance, price, or availability against other eMTBs.
How powerful is the Extreme 600?
McLaren lists 600W of normalized power and 161Nm of torque for its 600 model, alongside a separate peak-power figure of 852W. Normalized and peak power are different measures; they should not be treated as interchangeable or compared with another bike’s number unless the measurement basis matches. McLaren’s technology page lists the figures.

In its May 2024 launch announcement, McLaren said Race mode could reach up to 852W and stated a top speed of 20mph / 32kph. Those are the manufacturer’s launch claims, not results from an independent comparative test. McLaren’s launch announcement provides that context.
McLaren’s EU technology page lists its 250W version at 250W normalized power, 550W peak power, and 121Nm torque. These are specifications for that version, not the 600W Extreme configuration. McLaren Bikes EU technology page.

What equipment does it have?
McLaren lists the Extreme 600 with a 48V, 14.5Ah, 720Wh battery, a SRAM XX Eagle AXS transmission, and SRAM G2 RE four-piston brakes. These component specifications help identify the model, but by themselves do not show how it compares in overall trail performance or value. McLaren’s Extreme 600 product page.
Does “trail-legal” mean it is legal everywhere?
No. A manufacturer’s “trail-legal” label does not establish that a particular configuration is permitted on every trail or in every jurisdiction. Rules can depend on local definitions of an e-bike, its power and speed limits, and where it is ridden.

At launch, BikeRadar reported that McLaren’s 600W models were for US residents, while McLaren lists 250W variants in its EU range. That reporting is dated to the launch period and should not be read as a guarantee of current availability or legal status. Check local regulations and confirm the seller’s current market-specific configuration before riding.

McLaren’s range page makes the claim “World’s most powerful trail-legal electric mountain bikes*”. Its footnote says: “As of May 2024, all reasonable efforts have been undertaken to substantiate this claim is true and correct for a readily available and retailed, mass production electric mountain bike which excludes any potential custom or hand-built products.” McLaren Bikes’ range page.

- Unstoppable power, ultimate control – The Torque:ON 7 is the all-mountain e-bike that combines cutting-edge e-bike technology with Canyon’s legendary design and handling for unparalleled off-road performance.
- Powerful Shimano EP600 motor – With 85Nm of torque, the Shimano EP600 motor ensures smooth, efficient, and powerful pedaling on any terrain, making uphill and technical riding easier than ever.
- Progressive geometry – Built for stability and agility, the Torque:ON 7 features a low-slung frame design with an optimized geometry for tackling challenging trails with confidence and control.
- RockShox suspension – 180mm front and 175mm rear travel with RockShox ZEB R fork and Super Deluxe Select R rear shock provide excellent bump absorption and traction on rough trails and aggressive descents.
- Durable, long-lasting battery – The 504 Wh battery offers extended range for all-day rides, with smooth, reliable power output, so you can ride further and harder.
That qualification narrows the claim to McLaren’s assessment of readily available, retailed, mass-produced bikes as of May 2024; it excludes custom and hand-built products. The available evidence does not independently establish that the Extreme 600 remains the most powerful trail-legal eMTB in October 2026, or that it ranks first across jurisdictions. A fair present-day comparison would need to match power measurement, torque, regional speed and power limits, suspension design and travel, battery capacity, weight, components, and market availability.
