Which engine does the title mean?
There is no single engine specified by “a reliable Japanese four-cylinder still in production.” Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.5L is a reasonable candidate because Mazda lists the e-SKYACTIV G 2.5 in current Japan-market Mazda3 and CX-30 lineups. The naming and application matter: this evidence concerns Mazda’s G-family 2.5L, not every Japanese 2.5L four-cylinder, and it does not establish that the engine is sold in every country. In the Mazda3 hatchback lineup described in that release, Mazda lists automatic 2WD and 4WD configurations, plus a 2WD manual configuration for specified grades. Those combinations are specific to that Japanese lineup; they should not be assumed for Mazda3s or CX-30s sold elsewhere.
Is it proven reliable?
Not by the evidence available here. No engine-specific long-term failure rate or comparative reliability study for the naturally aspirated SKYACTIV-G 2.5L was verified. Without a defined engine code, model-year range, sample, and methodology, it would be misleading to call it categorically reliable or rank it above Toyota or Honda engines.

That is not evidence that the engine is unreliable. It means the current lineup confirmation answers whether Mazda still lists an application in Japan, while the reliability claim remains unquantified. A useful comparison would need to separate naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions and control for model year, market, emissions specification, and vehicle history.
What do the service alert and recall information show?
A limited service alert is not a fleet-wide failure rate
A Mazda service alert hosted by NHTSA concerns a limited set of 2.5L cylinder-deactivation applications and includes issue-related terms such as coolant leak, oil leak, misfire, low compression, and burnt valves. Its listed vehicle and engine application defines its scope; it does not show that all Mazda 2.5L engines have these problems or establish how often they occur. Check recalls by VIN
Mazda North American Operations provides a U.S. VIN-based recall lookup and says safety recall repairs are free for affected vehicles. Recall status is tied to the specific vehicle and market, so use the VIN rather than inferring coverage from an engine name or model family. Mazda Recall Information
Is SKYACTIV-G being replaced by SKYACTIV-Z?
They are distinct engine names and should not be conflated. In its 2025 briefing, Mazda described SKYACTIV-Z as a 2.5L inline-four under development, called it the final step after SKYACTIV-G on its engine roadmap, and said it planned to introduce it in a next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. What to verify before buying a car or replacement engine
- For a vehicle purchase: identify the model year, market, and exact engine variant; do not assume a Japan-market lineup or configuration applies to another country.
- For a reliability comparison: compare like with like—naturally aspirated versus turbocharged versions, matching model years and engine codes, and evidence based on comparable samples and methods.
- For a used vehicle: check recall status by VIN and review that vehicle’s service and repair history. A family-level service alert does not establish the condition of an individual car.
- For an engine assembly: confirm engine code, turbo status, model year, market, drivetrain, and VIN-specific fitment before purchase. The current lineup evidence does not prove that replacement assemblies interchange.
