Short answer: Mazda Spirit Racing is Mazda’s current motorsports identity, and it has already produced limited-run Roadster models in Japan. But Mazda has not announced that it is formally replacing Mazdaspeed, nor confirmed a Spirit Racing Mazda3 or sales of the Japanese Roadsters in other markets. The title’s “becoming” is a useful way to frame the question—not a confirmed corporate transition.
What Mazda Spirit Racing is—and what it is not
Mazda says it established Mazda Spirit Racing (MSR) in 2021 as the symbol and sub-brand of its motorsports activity. Its remit reaches beyond factory racing: Mazda describes a program spanning competition, opportunities for fans and drivers to participate, development of people, and technology relevant to future production cars. Mazda’s January 2025 interview explains how the company connects those strands.

That makes MSR Mazda’s present-day motorsport identity, but the official material cited here does not call it a successor to Mazdaspeed. There is no announced formal renaming, direct worldwide replacement, or production Spirit Racing Mazda3. Past Mazdaspeed models may invite comparisons, but the available announcements do not establish equivalent engineering, performance positioning, or corporate succession.

What to expect from the racing program
Production-based cars and development work
Mazda says its Spirit Racing team competes full-time in Japan’s Super Taikyu series with modified production-based cars, including an MX-5 and a Mazda3, and uses alternative fuels. The company presents racing as both competition and a demanding environment for evaluating technology and building the skills of engineers and mechanics. Mazda Spirit Racing head Ikuo Maeda described the purpose this way: “For cars, motorsports provide the perfect environment to do that. We can push performance to its limits in harsh conditions, making clear assessments on what works and what doesn’t.” The interview sets out Mazda’s race-to-road rationale.

2026 concepts are race entries, not retail announcements
Mazda’s 2026 Super Taikyu lineup continues that work with a Mazda3-based Spirit Racing 3 Future concept and a Roadster-based RS Future concept, alongside a Club Roadster entry. Their listed technologies are development and competition efforts, not confirmation of future showroom models.

The production cars: Roadster and Roadster 12R
Mazda announced the first Spirit Racing production vehicles as Japan-market Roadster and Roadster 12R models. “Roadster” is Mazda’s name for the MX-5 in Japan. The figures below come from Mazda Japan’s current model listing; prices are yen list prices for Japan, not US or Canadian MSRPs or an estimate of an imported car’s cost.

What is different about the 12R?
The 12R is the scarcer and more powerful of the two listed models: Mazda quotes 200 PS versus 184 PS for the Roadster, and specifies a full-bucket RECARO seat rather than the Roadster’s semi-bucket seat. Both are listed with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. Mazda caps the 12R at 200 units and says applications are closed on its current Japan page, so those differences do not mean a new buyer can presently order one directly through that application window.
Is there a Spirit Racing package for the regular Roadster?
Mazda has also named a Roadster Sports Package with performance components from Fujitsubo, Yokohama ADVAN, Brembo, OS Giken, RECARO, and Sabelt. The announced equipment includes a Fujitsubo exhaust, ADVAN NEOVA AD09 tires, Brembo brakes, an OS Giken limited-slip differential and oil, a RECARO seat, and a Sabelt harness. Mazda’s package announcement identifies the parts; it does not establish that each is sold separately everywhere or fits every Roadster generation. Confirm exact market, model year, fitment, and sales terms before treating the list as an aftermarket shopping guide.

Can you buy one outside Japan?
The cited product listing and order announcement concern Japan. They do not establish an export launch or official US, Canadian, or European availability. For a purchase decision, check the local Mazda distributor rather than assuming that a Japan-market listing applies in your country. An imported-car price would also depend on the specific vehicle and applicable import costs; Mazda’s yen list prices are not a landed-price quote.

No production Spirit Racing Mazda3 has been announced in the cited official material. Mazda’s Mazda3-based Spirit Racing 3 Future is a 2026 Super Taikyu concept used for racing and technology development. Its presence on the grid shows Mazda continuing to use the Mazda3 in motorsport; it does not confirm a customer car, a launch date, or a Mazdaspeed-style road model.
