The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is a new generation, not a routine refresh: it replaces the 2024’s fifth-generation V6 setup with a sixth-generation truck built on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform and powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, with an available hybrid. The right choice depends on the specific trim and drivetrain you want, plus the vehicle’s actual price—not model year alone.

Is the 2025 4Runner a new generation?

Yes. Toyota identifies 2010–2024 as the fifth generation and calls the 2025 4Runner the sixth. The 2025 is built on Toyota’s TNGA-F global truck platform, which Toyota also uses for the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota describes the platform as contributing to strength, capability and refinement; those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Toyota’s 2024 model information and its 2025 introduction establish the generational change.

What changed between the 2024 and 2025 Toyota 4Runner?

Engine choices: V6 replaced by turbo four-cylinder options

Toyota’s 2024 model-year description lists a 4.0-liter V6. For 2025, Toyota replaces it with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in two versions: i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Toyota rates i-FORCE at up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The i-FORCE MAX is rated at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. Its hybrid system pairs an electric motor integrated with the eight-speed transmission with a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery. These are Toyota-published maximum ratings, not independent test measurements. Toyota’s 2025 specifications detail the new powertrains.

Toyota published EPA-estimated highway figures of up to 26 mpg for the 2025 i-FORCE and up to 24 mpg for the i-FORCE MAX. Those are highway estimates, not real-world results; they do not establish which model costs less to fuel overall. A directly comparable real-world fuel-economy comparison for the two model years is not established here.

Trim lineup: nine grades for 2025

Toyota listed seven grades for 2024 and nine for 2025. The names matter when comparing equipment: the new Trailhunter and Platinum join the 2025 lineup, while the 2024 SR5 Premium does not appear on Toyota’s 2025 list.

Model year Toyota-listed grades
2024 SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, TRD Pro
2025 SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, Trailhunter

Trail- and performance-oriented equipment is grade-specific. Toyota positions Trailhunter for overlanding and lists factory equipment including Old Man Emu shocks, Toyo 33-inch tires, an onboard air compressor, RIGID Industries LED fog lamps and an ARB roof rack. Toyota also describes the TRD Pro as having its own off-road suspension and 33-inch tires. Do not assume these features are standard across the 2025 range—or that a Trailhunter-versus-SR5 comparison isolates the effect of the model-year change. Check the window sticker and exact configuration.

Drivetrain: compare the exact configuration

Toyota lists 2WD, part-time 4WD and full-time 4WD availability for the 2025 range; it also says every 2025 i-FORCE MAX grade has 4WD. Availability varies by grade and powertrain. The supplied Toyota summaries do not establish a complete drivetrain-by-trim matrix for both years, so confirm the specific vehicle’s configuration before comparing capability or price.

Safety and driver assistance

Toyota says TSS-P is standard across the 2024 lineup. Its listed features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with sway warning, automatic high beams and high-speed dynamic radar cruise control. For 2025, Toyota says TSS 3.0 is standard on all models, listing pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams and proactive driving assist. These are manufacturer descriptions of driver-assistance features, which have operating conditions; they are not substitutes for attentive driving or measures of crashworthiness. Comparable independent crash-test ratings are not provided in the cited material.

Cabin and convenience equipment

Toyota lists a power rear window as standard on the 2025 and a power liftgate and 14-inch touchscreen as available. Availability depends on grade and configuration, so compare the equipment list for the particular 2024 and 2025 vehicles rather than treating these as universal features.

Price, towing and warranty: what the published figures do—and do not—tell you

In its December 10, 2024 announcement, Toyota set the 2025 4Runner’s starting MSRP at $40,770, plus a $1,450 delivery processing and handling fee. That is historical launch pricing, not a current dealer quote or transaction price. It also does not establish a like-for-like price comparison with a 2024. Local inventory, condition, trim and drivetrain can change the comparison; use current listings and match equipment before deciding value. Toyota’s launch-price announcement provides the dated figure.

Toyota describes the 2025’s towing capacity as up to 6,000 pounds. “Up to” matters: verify the rating for the exact configuration and use the vehicle’s owner information for towing requirements. A directly comparable, configuration-qualified 2024 figure is not established here.

Toyota’s 2025 announcement describes original new-vehicle coverage as a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty, 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid-component warranty and 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid-battery warranty. Coverage for an individual used 4Runner depends on its in-service date and applicable terms; consult its warranty booklet or a Toyota dealer.

Which 4Runner should I buy, 2024 or 2025?

Start with what the vehicle must do, then compare equivalent trims and actual vehicles. The 2024 is the choice if the outgoing generation’s V6 setup is what you want. The 2025 is the choice if you want the new turbocharged powertrain options, including the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, or need a grade such as Trailhunter or Platinum. Neither model year is automatically the better buy without matching configuration, equipment, condition and price.

  1. Choose the powertrain. Decide whether the 2024 V6, 2025 i-FORCE turbo or 2025 i-FORCE MAX hybrid fits your priorities. Do not infer lower running costs from the published highway estimates alone.
  2. Match intended use to grade. Compare the specific off-road or comfort equipment you need; Trailhunter and TRD Pro equipment is not representative of every 2025.
  3. Verify drivetrain and equipment. Confirm 2WD or 4WD configuration, installed options and factory features on the exact vehicle’s sticker.
  4. Compare current, local prices. Use current dealer or used-vehicle listings for comparable trims, mileage and condition. Toyota’s 2025 launch MSRP is a dated reference, not today’s market price.
  5. Check ownership details. For used examples, confirm warranty status and, if towing, the configuration-specific rating and vehicle requirements.
