The Ford F-350 Super Duty debuted for the 1999 model year, and Ford later introduced all-new Super Duty lineups for 2017 and 2023. Those are the clearest generation milestones supported by Ford’s announcements. Ford does not provide a complete official year-by-year generation chart, so intermediate generation ranges should not be treated as settled fact.

This is a chronology of documented milestones, not a complete table of generation start and end years. Without a source that establishes the intervening boundaries, labels for every year risk conflating a full redesign with a mid-cycle refresh or an enthusiast shorthand.

What changed at the major redesign milestones?
1999 model-year debut
Ford’s historical account places the Super Duty introduction in 1998, while the contemporary announcement identifies the truck as a 1999-model line. Ford described the 2017 lineup as all-new and highlighted high-strength steel and an aluminum-alloy body. Ford said the material changes reduced weight by up to 350 pounds while it pursued greater towing and hauling capability. That is Ford’s claim for the announced lineup, not a weight reduction that applies identically to every F-350 configuration. Ford’s 2017 Super Duty announcement.

2023 model year
Ford called the 2023 lineup next-generation. The launch highlighted an available high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, a new standard 6.8-liter gas V8, embedded 5G capability and available Trailer Navigation. Equipment and powertrain availability depend on configuration. Ford’s 2023 Super Duty reveal.
Ford also advertised lineup maximums of 1,200 lb.-ft. of torque, 40,000 pounds of maximum towing and 8,000 pounds of maximum payload. These are configuration-dependent manufacturer claims for the 2023 Super Duty lineup, not universal F-350 specifications; check the specific truck’s configuration before relying on a capability figure. Why model-year changes are not necessarily a new generation
Manufacturers can revise equipment, packages, engines, trims or configuration availability without introducing a new generation. Ford’s 2024 product information and 2025 order guide document changes of that kind, but do not make either year a separate generation merely by listing updates. How to verify information for a specific F-350
- Identify the truck’s model year and whether it is a pickup or chassis cab.
- Confirm the relevant trim, engine and configuration before applying a feature or capability claim.
- For operating instructions or equipment details, open Ford’s owner-manual index, select the exact model year, and verify that the manual matches the truck.
