Not as a maintenance routine. Brief hard acceleration is not automatically harmful when your car is fully warmed, driven legally, and operated within its limits—but there is no universal benefit to flooring a car occasionally, and the manuals reviewed do not establish that it cleans deposits or improves engine health. Follow the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle.
What “flooring it” does—and does not—mean
Flooring the accelerator means pressing the pedal fully. It does not necessarily mean reaching redline: an automatic transmission may shift before then, and different powertrains respond differently. So there is no useful universal RPM target or recommended frequency for doing it.
Keep any acceleration within legal speed limits and safe traffic conditions. A full-throttle maneuver is not appropriate if it would endanger you or other road users.
When hard acceleration is more likely to be a problem
Before the engine is properly warm
Do not use high engine speeds while the engine is cold. Ford’s 2018 Fiesta ST Owner’s Manual Supplement says, “Always wait until the engine is properly warmed up before running high engine speeds.” This is model-specific guidance, not a universal temperature or RPM threshold.

At sustained high RPM and low load
The same Ford manual warns: “Do not operate the engine at high RPM and low load for sustained periods of time, as damage may occur.” That warning applies to the 2018 Fiesta ST; it should not be turned into a blanket RPM limit for other cars.
How break-in guidance changes the answer
Break-in instructions are for a particular new vehicle and period of use, not a general maintenance practice. Check the break-in section of your car’s own manual rather than assuming every car should be driven the same way.

Renault Clio 4 phase 2
Renault’s guidance for the Clio 4 phase 2, covering 2016–2020, says: “During the running in period, do not accelerate hard while the engine is still cold and do not let the engine over-rev.” It lists separate running-in limits for petrol and diesel versions, so the applicable engine and manual matter.
Fiat Tonale
The 2022 Fiat Tonale owner’s manual describes brief full-throttle acceleration while cruising, within permitted speed limits, as one element of that model’s break-in guidance. It also advises against long, hard acceleration in low gears. These are Tonale break-in instructions, not a recommendation to floor cars routinely for engine care.

Does an occasional “Italian tune-up” clean the engine?
The manufacturer guidance cited here does not support the general claim that occasional full-throttle driving reliably removes carbon deposits or improves a modern engine’s health. No broadly applicable study statistic was established in the reviewed material. If you suspect a deposit, performance issue, or fault, use the vehicle’s maintenance guidance and seek diagnosis for the actual symptom instead of relying on hard acceleration as a fix.

- Check the exact owner’s manual. Use its guidance for warm-up, normal operation, break-in, and any engine or transmission-specific limits.
- Wait until the engine is properly warm before using high engine speeds.
- Keep acceleration brief and controlled; avoid sustained high RPM at low load, and do not exceed vehicle or road limits.
- For a new car, follow the break-in section for its exact model, engine, and transmission rather than applying another manufacturer’s instructions.
For example, Ford’s 2018 Fiesta ST supplement lists a standard maximum of 6,375 RPM and an overspeed limit of 6,500 RPM. Those are limits for that vehicle, not recommended driving targets or figures to apply to another car. Ford also says the manual supplied with the specific vehicle should be treated as the primary source.
